They are decent hotels, not in the city centre and are about 20 minutes from the airport. Albert Court maybe closer to the city. I would stay at one that has good MRT (subway) access.

I have taken the subway by myself up to the midnight hour eversince they launched it years ago! Singapore is very safe. TONS of eating places are open. Some only get "cooking' around midnight. Singaporeans eat well into the wee hours of the morning! It's our favorite pasttime! IN and around that Albert Court Hotel area are tons of inexpensive places. You'd have to serve good to great food in Singapore to survive! This is food paradise we're talking about. So get out there and enjoy our national Chicken rice dish, char kway teow, chili crab and Indian mee goreng.

Cabs are relatively very cheap. A ride from the airport to the Albert Court Hotel or city ctr wouldn't be more than USD20 (prior to midnight). There's a small surcharge after midnight. Subways are safe and convenient so that would be my first choice. I only hail cabs when I am hot and tired of walking or it's raining.

Good luck!

Good luck, Sammy. Send me your questions anytime! Happy travels! Wish I was going to Singapore soon too. I'll be there in July. it'll be hotter than heck. Bring lots of cool cotton. You will sweat like there's no tomorrow. It's very casual there.

Which Copthorne Hotel are you referring to? I think there are a few.....

I've stayed at Copthorne Kings and while I'd recommend it...it IS farther out of the city than most people would probably like. Having said that, the Singapore Airlines bus runs right by it (there's a stop about 50 metres away) and the City Buzz does too. Plus there are other buses that go by that get you here and there.

We weren't worried by the travel but it's not like can just trot down to Orchard Road whenever the desire strikes you. A 10-15 minute walk -approx-gets you to the Quay area if you don't mind sweating like a pig! :-o)

I agree you MUST try char kway teow and chicken rice. Also popiah are pretty good too (hope spelling is OK).

Have fun!

I would say this 2 hotels are very near the city and they are located far from the airport, probably 30-35mins by taxi or 50mins by bus to mrt. One of the cheapest accomodation i've encountered is at Kembangan, i remembered it's opposite the MRT, less than 1min walk to the apartment. 10mins to the airport by MRT directly. Oh, yeah its a service apartment, fully furnished. That time i was thinking of the convenience of having a washing machine and all cooking appliances in the house rather than being "jailed" in a hotel room. If i remembered correctly, their prices are about $110 per day. Well they do only weekly basis. Here is some info, check out the website: http://masjid19.co.nr

Sorry but I would not stay at Kembangan. That's in the sticks and as far out of the city as you can get! And a service apt for a few days? Sorry I don't agree with you, Info guy. I'd rather stay in a hotel and not have to think of doing laundry, cooking and washing dishes! Tht being said, a hotel in a good location, is the best thing if you're new to a city. The concierge service can help point you in the right direction.

Sammy,

Designer gear is abt the same price there as it is everywhere else. The only savings you get from buying the original thing is saving on paying tax. You get some of it back. Do ask the shops for a tax exempt form.

There are a few places that sell factory seconds if you like that kind of thing. There is a shop at Lucky Plaza on Orchard Road. I can't remember the name but it's on the ground floor. If you go in at the entrance, go up the steps into the mall and it's to the left of the escalators. I recognise some of the labels from the US like the Gap, Nike, etc..They have sweatshirts, t's, golf shirts, men's work shirts, etc.. Everything is less than S$10 a piece. Some shirts are like $2-3.

If you are looking for jewelry that's really cheap, the store above that shop on the 1st floor has great bargains.

Have fun!
