I must travel to Somalia on business. Does anyone have any advice for me? And, will it be safe to stay in Mogadishu?

I suggest you cancel this trip. It would be easier for you to stay home and kill yourself.

Mogadishu has always been dangerouse but if you have to go, you might want to take several security guards with you, and at the moment Kaaraan district seems to be the safest place and the most dangerouse is Hiriwaa district. I have been told Global hotel is nice. hope this helps.

Don't know if you've already gone, but if you travel to the north to Somaliland its much safer so you could get the people from Mog to come to you. You can only get the visa from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia but apparently its fairly straight forward. Ethiopian Airlines fly there in to Hargeysa about 3 times a week. Get the Bradt guide to Ethiopia and Eritrea it explains it all clearly in there. Africa is not as bad as many people seem to think, in Somaliland you can arrange a guide/guard to escort you around they're actually classed as tourist police so they must get some people visiting!

hope this helps.

Unless you have been there before then the simple reply is DON'T go. You may be in telecoms or oil exploration but is that what you want on your gravestone. Ignore the rest of the posts, I am a TV news cameraman who first went into "hell" in 1992 and my last trip was early 1997 so, I speak with some experience having been in and out of the country in excess of 40+ times and only a little shrapnel in my left leg and a piece of AK47 fragment caught through the next to my spinal cord, fired through the bottom of a Black Hawk, I am one of the lucky ones.

If your business is that important then arrange a meeting in either Northern Kenya or Djibouti, a Westerner going into the "Mog" now is tantamount to suicide, Don't be foolish.

ps: if you are American then don't even THINK of going in, Somali memories are very long.

Well said 'Ethiopian Devil' but YOU must remember that a large part of the instability around Mogadishu is because of Ethiopian troops being present!
