I will be traveling to Nicaragua at the end of May/June 2008.

I’m thinking about using a travel agency to take me around a tour through Corn Island, San Juan del Sur, Ometepe and other surrounding areas.

Has anyone used Explore Nicaragua Tours? And if so, would you recommend it.

I’m a little nervous to be traveling there. I was born there but have not been back since I was very young.

I hear stories about the government, Americans getting kidnapped, and other random stories and well, it’s hard not to let the stories get to me. If you have been there recently and would like to share and pros and cons, please do so. My sister has travelled there many times and has had no problems. But there is always the chance of “what if”. Anyway…I know when traveling the best thing is to use common sense and judgment…but just wanted to get other people’s feedback. Anything would help – whether good or bad. Thank you.

Hello, I spent 24 days in Jan/Feb this year going all over Nicaragua....and never had A problem. In San Juan Del Sur, where i rented a Casita...i walked home at night from the Pelican Eyes Hotel many times at 1am/2am along streets, without any lights...and never had a problem. It's more dangerous in my home city(Edmonton, Alberta-Can) at night! If you are going to travel to these places with a "what if" in your head at every turn....then you shouldn't even pack your suitcases....if ya know what i mean. I travelled to a lot of places in Nicaragua...and did it on my own....except for hiring a driver for 2 days....without any worries. If you want a go with a tour company..(many people do)...then the BEST one in my opinion is: Jb Fun Tours! They are in Granada. They are FIRST CLASS! Just ask for Cristian...or Jorge. They both speak fluent English. They will take you to where you want go...and you will be very happy with their professionalism...trust me! Their Tel/Fax is (505)552-6732...or Cell# (505)871-5522....URL is www.jbfuntours.com I can't comment on Explore Nicaragua Tours, as i don't know anyone that used them, but Jb..i KNOW is Excellent!..in every respect. Hope this helps you.

I visited Nicaragua a few times and Nicaragua is very safe. You can travel in all Nicaragua without any problems. I used Cocopeli-Tours and i can recommend this touroperator. They are very personal and they plan your trips very good and professional. E-mail: cocopelitours@gmail.com

Hello,

I came back from my first visit to Nicaragua two weeks ago and had no problems. Don't worry, as long as you use the same awareness and common sense you use at home (ie. not wandering streets alone in the middle of the night, etc) you should be fine.

As for a quide, we found one through the tourist information centre down there. He's not affiliated with a tour company, however his English is very good and we used his guiding services many times over the month spent there. He was very honest, and rates were extremely reasonable. I can give you his name and email if you wish to contact him. His name is Marcell, and you can reach him at aldomarcell@yahoo.com. Give him a couple of days to reply to any emails.

I heard the hot springs were not great, however I would recommend checking out Somoto Canyon. Beautiful!
