I am seeking opinions about places to eat in Goreme. We prefer simple dishes and are not particularly fussy about decor. Good service is a plus and the availability of a meat other than lamb almost a necessity.

I would be interested in reading both recommendations of restaurants and any specific dishes people enjoyed there.

We had a very good meal at Alaturca and there was plenty of chicken and other meats. Dibek was also quite good although you had to sit on cushions on the floor. Many people recommended the Orient, but we did not have tıme to visit there.

Dear Busy-retired,

Have just returned from Turkey and spent 4 days in Cappadocia. We ate twice at the Orient and really enjoyed our meals both times. We were well looked after and it was here that I had the best coban salad on the whole trip.We also ate at Alaturka and had a nice meal - the service was more upmarket but the prices reflected this.

Hope this helps.

Alaturka is one of the best restaurants I've ever eaten in, and the cost0quality ratio is pretty good, too.

Try the humus and pastirma* starter - pastirma is a local delicacy.

Orient was okay, but a bit wierd, music dating from the late '70's, decoration consisting of copies of famous paintings from all eras....The worst thing was a group of young Turkish businessmen who spent their entire meal watching a soap opera on television - nothing wrong with the businessmen as such, but you don't expect this in a place aspiring to be fairly upmarket!

Dibek was good and you don't necessarily have to sit on floor cushions.

You can have nice food at Dibek restaurant they are serving traditional home food, just near dibek restaurant there is a Pide Firin (Turkish Pizza) it more cheaper.

We really like The Local Resturant. It's on the road to Goreme Open Air Museum. Another recent trip report also said their experience was so good that they went back the next day.

Dibek - yes food is not bad and we sat outside on the regular tables, but you'll be surrounded by locals playing cards and chatting around you.

Alaturca - our guide said their quality is not as good as they used to be, so we didn't go.

There were no locals playing cards in Dibek when we went and if Alaturka's quality has gone down it must have been absolutely incredible before. I wonder if this is a case of a guide being paid commission?

We also tried Dibek and liked it very much. It is a very nice setting, in a good location, with great food!

by the way, I would recommend sitting inside! Upstairs if it is open.
