langkawi to Penang by ferry (nervous) |
|
Have just booked the ferry to Penang from Langkawi with Langkawi ferry services for the end of August. Have been looking on the net and some not so good info re safety etc has come up. Had a very bad experience in Thailand last year on a ferry and was wondering about sea conditions for this time of year (will it be rough) and saftey etc. If anyone out there can put my mind to rest it would be most appreciated. Thanks |

Dear Martyfarm, out of 360 days in a year 40 to 50 might be rough. But at this time of the year the chances are higher than during the high season. Normally the waves are not too big. We haven't had any accidents since a long time and as far as I know the standards for safety improved. I would say that you have a good chance that the trip will be without any problems and even pleasant. Have a great time! Eva

marty, Don't be nervous. Have taken this trip many times (even with my elderly parents), never had any worries. When the boat leaves Langkawi sit out on the upper deck, enjoy the breeze and the sun. You do get choppy days, but not many. These boats are a good size, they can handle most weather conditions. If the sea is to rough the boat will not leave port. Enjoy your trip, its a lovely way to spend an afternoon.

Marty Hope you dont mind me jumping on this thread too. We are looking to use the ferry from Langkawi to Penang in November (late nov) whislt i know we cant predict the weather that far ahead does anyone know if its likely to be calm? i get really sea sick and am not looking forward to 2/3 hours of choppy conditions? Is there somewhere to store luggae to? and what is the general condition of the ferry? Many thanks

Luggage storage ! Well this depends on which vessel you travel on, usually it right at the point of entry to the vessel (the middle) or it can be placed out on the deck. Whatever, it is safe. They are good about this. Choppy or calm, well its hit and miss, mostly calm. Did 24 trips over 12 months, only one was choppy, but that was the one I enjoyed the most. I regard it as a nice day out, take some food and beverage and sit out on the upper deck, relax and enjoy. Its so nice ! As I have already pointed out ... these people know what they are doing, if the sea is rough, well, nobody is going anywhere.

Martyfam, Dont be nervous. Done most of my traveling to and from penang via ferry and dont have much problem. The problem i had is only the limited schedule they have for this route. As for your luggae, normally it will be stored outsite but it all depends on which vessel you will be travelling in. And as wehat chameleon suggested go to the uper deck and enjoy the breeze and the peace.... Affendy
