Southern Sun or Tambo International airport Hotel |
|
This is a good 4-star property - refurbished a little and renamed. It was the Holiday Inn. It is on the airport property, and if you don't have too much baggage, you can walk there. Otherwise, they have a shuttle, If the price is right for you, you will not be disappointed. I suggest you email them to get details on the shuttle. Here's their web site: The Airport Sun Intercontinental is directly across the driveway from the terminals, but double the price of the Southern Sun.

Has anyone stayed here recently (since April 08)? Was just getting ready to book one night and noticed they are refurbishing until Aug 08. southernsun.com/SSH/VID/f66edbc1847d8010VgnV… I would imagine there is no construction noise at night but would be glad to hear some first hand experience(s). Thanks.

Hi I was in Johannesburg last month and stayed at the airport three different times during the trip. Each time I stayed at the Intercontinental. I inspected the Southern Sun OR Tambo and walked through the entire hotel with the manager. There is construction taking place on the property in that the rooms are being renovated. I think the manager said it was going on until late this year. The hotel is on the airport compound but you can not walk to the terminal right now because of parking ramp construction. I recommend you stay at the Emperors Palace Mondior COncorde if you are looking for a similar price point. It is a four minute shuttle from the airport. Although I was staying at the Intercontinental, I took my wife and kids to the Palace for meals and shopping. I have stayed at the SOuthern Sun on previous trips but will wait until re-furb is over to stay again. Craig Beal - Owner Travel Beyond.

Thanks for the suggestion Craig. The Emperor priced out almost $100 more than SS. If I was staying longer in JNB that would be a good choice but I only need a place to sleep for the night so I think I will keep looking or put up with the refurbish.

Here is a link to my trip report here on the TA forums. Part I covers the Sotuehrn Sun Tambo. We stayed there at the end of last December:

We stayed at the Metcourt Laurel which is the most inexpensive of the hotels in the Emperors complex. It was totally adequate, clean, quite big rooms, nice breakfast. The shuttle is good (though difficult to find perhaps for those coming to J'burg for the first time). It is attached to the mall/ casino. For jetlagged travellers I would really recommend it. Greetings My name is Josef Schmid - I am the General Manager of the Southern Sun OR Tambo International Airport. We are indeed refurbing 135 rooms but the refurb is contained to one tower and the noise does not carry through to the South Wing. All work will be completed by end-Aug. Please feel free to direct your enquiries or book via my office on josefs@southernsun.com. We look forward to welcoming you. RGDS Josef & the team
