Transiting trough LA - what to do in a few hours |
|
Hi ! I'll spend half a day in LA (12:30 pm to 6-7 pm - flight is at 10:30 pm) on June 7 and a full day on June 29 (7:30 am and sleeping in a hotel near LAX) while transiting in LAX from Montreal to Sydney, Australia. My boyfriend and I are around 30 years old and we do have some ideas on what to do, but we're not sure if it's do-able. Here's what we had in mind: - Getty Center - Walk of fame - Sunset Boulevard / Beverly Hills - Griffiths Tower for the Hollywood sign - Have dinner in a nice but not too expensive restaurant (max 30 $ per person) - Other suggestions ???? We would prefer not to rent a car - is it possible. How do you think we could split our activities between our two days to make the most of our limited time? Do you think we are leaving out something "crucial" (we're not amusement park fans and are not interested to see the celebrities' houses), still considering we only have a day and a half? We would be open to be part of a tour that visits the places mentionned above. Any suggestions? Thanks very much in adavance! |

You can join a tour from your hotel which will show you the Hollywood sites and Beverly Hills sites. They will drop you off in the center of Hollywood at the end of the tour if you don't want to go back to the hotel and spend more time. The Getty Center is more difficult without a car, but possible with the bus system(www.mta.net). You might want to stop off in Santa Monica on the way back from Hollywood or Getty Center and have dinner there=many choices in your price range. Enjoy!!

On June 7 with 10 hours between flights, I don't know how the luggage would work out but maybe you've researched that already? There are no lockers at LAX, so with luggage you'd def need the rental car. Getty you can do on June 7, by cab, or take Flyaway Coach from your terminal to WESTWOOD ($4). 25 mins. Then 761 Rapid bus up to the Getty (7 mins). Getty has a fine dining room open on Sat but more like $40pp. Great place. They also have a cafe less expensive or, if you take the bus back to Westwood a lot of dining options right there. Then Flyaway back to the airport at 6:30. (Sat is the easiest breeziest day at the airport, 2.5 hour arrival should do fine). As for Sun the 29th, staying at LAX and wanting to do so much in Hollywood across town...I'll let the other experts tackle that one, I think they'll recommend a car.

You need a car, it's not possible to do what you want, without one. What will you do with your luggage? Will it be checked through to the next flight? Probably not. Rent a car and store it in the trunk while you sightsee the day of the layover between flights. The short day, visit The Getty. That's about all you have time for. The second time through, visit Walk of Fame, Sunset Blvd, and I don't know what Griffiths Tower is? Maybe you mean Griffith Park, but you don't need to go there (and won't have time), just to see the Hollywood Sign. You'll see that when you're at Walk of Fame - just go to the top of the Hollywood Highland Mall for the view. If you don't rent a car this day, just book a tour from your LAX hotel. Please read our FAQs at the top of the LA forums for information on tours. Dinner -- go to Beechwood. It's near LAX hotels (if you don't have a car, it's about a $10 cab), a very great and hip restaurant - but eat outside, on the patio, and order from the bar menu which is the same great food, but a 1/3 of the price. Frankly, the night you stay over, consider getting a hotel in Marina del Rey rather than LAX. You'll be very happy and they're just a few minutes apart - but a world of difference.

Hi everyone! Thanks for all your replies :) I was so sure I could store my luggage at LAX, good thing to know. I'll check whether I have to pick it up at the airport of if it's checked in automatically. I didn't want to bother renting a car, but I guess I'll just have to make my mind to it. Do you think I'll get caught in the traffic if my plane lands at 7:30 on the 29 (it's a Sunday) and I want to get to thw Walk of fame? Is it a complicated drive or pretty straight forward? Sorry about Griffiths Tower - got confused with San Francisco's Coit Tower while writing it. Thanks!
