Beach Restoration |
|
I just read The Destin Log online. I am so angry. Can anyone enlighten me on this decision. I am referring to the vote to use brown/gray sand for the rest of the beach restoration! Why? Will that really happen? I think the contractor needs to find a better source of sand. If Walton County can or Pensacola can, why can't Destin? That will ruin the those beaches. What's the story? |
|
BJ-I have been following this pretty closely and Have not seen anything regarding the sand . I am pretty sure they have found a sand site off the coast to the S.W. and it is the same beautiful sand that is already there . I think Eglin was involved in finding the sand . I have some pretty good sources on this issue. I am confident that their info is good . Restoration should start in Jan 09

Jimmy38 from the sound of this article from just 3 days ago sounds like it is going to be some brown sand, the comments on the article seem to agree from the people that were at this meeting.

Read the link provided by the last post. Scroll on down to the comments section and read what people had to say that attended the meeting where the sand was on display. I don't see how the Engr. firm can say that they could not find white sand, when others could! The first restoration area used white sand. I am concerned. I would like to see the beach restored but I would like to see it done right. I rely on those in charge to do the right thing. I hope this is the case but it does not appear so from what I have 'read'. I just don't know what to think?

I will make some inquiries about this and repost. This makes NO sense to me. We have a location located for Crystal beach and i am sure it was not used up. Thanks for this post! I know all he locals will be up in arms. Depending on what i find out, I will provide e-mail addresses to every city counselor and mayor for everyone to send their thoughts to. Thanks again. I have been so busy that I am ashamed that I haven't seen this article.

I saw that article . As I have been following this closely for a while ( Jetty East is our families spot in Destin) I have seen a lot of ideas /proposals come and go . While the beach slowly disapears. I cant imagine this happening unless there is no other resort . The color and texture of the sand there is almost iconic . Big deal for tourist marketing puposes . Lets see what Semco can dig up . And pray mother nature stays happy with Destin

Thanks for any local info. I have to rely on the newspaper, the Destin City Council minutes, this site, etc...I believe there is a meeting August 7th somewhere? The place we stay is in Destin Pointe at the Magnolia House condo - so I have an interest in the beaches being restored properly. If they mess up the color - that is a very big negative in my opinion. Thanks, Semco...

I am very disturbed about this! And I am even more disturbed about the answers I am getting. Here is what I have found out. Here is the dialog that I have gotten, then after that, I am posting some e-mails for the city and city counsel. Question - What do you know about the below article? Answer - Nothing more than what's in the article other than when bleached for 99 days this sand is indistinguishable from that which was used in the former project. Question - They tried this in Walton county and it didn't work. Is this from that Freeport place? Answer - No, completely different kind of project. This sand is coming from an offshore borrow site. Question - What happened to the offshore burrow we used for Crystal Beach? That sand wasn't brown. Answer - Comletely used up in first project. TIME TO TAKE ACTION FOLKS. I THINK THERE IS ANOTHER POCKET OF SAND THAT HAS BEEN LOCATED FOR ANOTHER PROJECT. This bleaching of sand has been tried in the past and did not work at all. Here are some key e-mail addresses. Please voice your opinion, obviously, I am mine! This city is run differently. Many times, they will listen to the tourist and out of town owners more than the locals. City Manager - Greg Kisela gkisels@cityofdestin.com Asst. City Manager - John Paton jpaton@cityofdestin.com City Council This IS frustrating. The only public addresses for them is council@cityofdestin.com I have private addresses, but don't want tot post them on a public forum, just like you would not like yours posted. However, in the subject line, put att: (name of counsil member) and send the e-mail separately to each member. (example Att: Dewey Destin) Mayor - Craig Barker All other council members names. Jim Bagby Dewey Destin Sam Seevers (This is a lady) Sandy Trammell Tom Weidenhamer Kelly Windes Jim Wood Tourism feeds each and every member of the council.
