Marriott Courtyard North - 37th street |
|
Strange – Tripadvisor decided to drop my review of the Marriott Courtyard North (37st street) without telling me why. Unfortunately I submitted it from the Marriott the last day we were there and did not save a copy. Briefly, we stayed there for a week in mid July 2008. The hotel was very family-oriented but nice – good lobby, excellent front desk staff. There are two pools (small indoor and larger outdoor, with waterfalls). There are two free internet-connected computers with poorly working printers in the lobby, and all day long they have free coffee there (no milk - only cream and the artificial flavored junk) and at the front desk, occasionally complementary cookies or fruit. You can buy some basic foods and drinks (sodas, ice cream I think, wine…) from two large glass-front fridges located near the front desk. Rooms are fairly large and all have small balconies directly overlooking the beach and ocean. They come with a mini-fridge and automatic coffee machine, with decent coffee. All is well appointed and worked well. There is no screen on the doors leading to the balcony – they ask you to keep them shut at night to keep flying bugs out (attracted by the light). As others have written, the low-flying military jets can at times get noisy especially out on the beach, but they don’t fly over the hotels at night. The other problem is that the hotel has only 2 elevators, meaning sometimes long waits to get up and down from your room (a problem especially for those located near the top). We found the hotel to be fairly expensive (around $300 for a regular room in the summer, after taxes) but that is also the case for equivalent hotels on the beach in the area. We had considered the slightly cheaper Sheraton also and liked the Marriott better – the Sheraton’s rooms are apparently smaller and a good number (the cheaper ones) don’t directly overlook the ocean. If we ever return to the Virginia Beach area, we would eagerly return to the Marriott. |

The sound of the jets to me mean freedom. It is the men and women of our country keeping the USA safe. Oh, wait, I see...you are Canadian. Sorry our jets bothered you on your trip.

Strange that your review was dropped. I'm sure there must have been some technical glitch - there is certainly nothing here that breaks any TA rules. Thanks for posting.

Thats what I suspected, Wendy - and it is the first time I have had it happen to me. To the other person, I am a US citizen currently living in Canada, although I don't know what that has to do with anything. While I agree to the need, at times, for military jets, that doesn't mean that I want to spend time beside them. Civilian aircraft also clearly have their uses - that doesn't mean that I want to live beside a runway. Enjoy your freedom fries...

Tom, are you sure it was dropped? I mean did you actually see it appear on the hotel reviews? The hotel reviews are a whole nuther animal compared with the forum posts. The hotel reviews need to be 'reviewed' by TA...although not sure why or for what...but they keep them a while before they post them. So it may have appeared yours was posted when you clicked your back button but it takes several days for it to appear in actuality. How long has it been since you posted?

You're right about the milk. My native land favors milk too but here we seem to like cream. Now, I love the cream in coffee...too weak with milk for me. But tea...have to have milk, cream is too heavy. And you know, some 'cream' is actually 'non-dairy creamer'. Not scientifcally inclined and on the creative side I am imagining that non-dairy cow. Rather like the boneless chicken farm with those poor things lying about. Look forward to having you back!

Yeah, they dropped it. It was in my contributions file as under review for the past 2 weeks, and then just disappeared with no explanation. Annoying, but not all that important. In any case, it was very similar to what I wrote in the message above. I think I gave the hotel a 4-star - not perfect, but a very good option. Thanks again for all your comments. I too love cream in my coffee, but am trying (not all that successfully) to limit my intake of saturated fats...

Tom, Virginia Beach and Norfolk is home to several military bases. Where do you expect the planes to fly and do their training exercises? Over populated areas? They fly out over the ocean, then when they are done, they have to fly home, which means that they HAVE to fly over a beach. I guess you didn't take that into consideration when doing your research for a "quiet" vacation spot. Yes, I am very patriotic. My father was in the Air Force, I had a couple of uncles in the Navy, my brother was a Marine. Would I complain if they flew a plain over my vacation spot or even my house for that matter? NO. I would THANK them, for I know the sacrifices they chose to make so that others could enjoy those "freedom fries".

I don't believe he was that bothered by the planes. He was just stating they fly over and he probably didn't know or realize that before he came to Virginia Beach and wanted others to know in case they didn't know.

You are right, MZVikkee - In general the noise did not bother us alot and we were happy to have come to Virginia Beach, but people looking for real peace and quiet should choose another place (Ocean City? or better still Chincoteague? (spelling?)...). But people also have the right to know about the planes, and I am not the first to mention it. I get the feeling that the planes most often fly over about streets 25-45 north - probably farther south or north would be abit quieter (though I am not an expert in this).

Tom, you are correct.... we stayed at the edgewater condos on 36th. We experienced the same noise factor. I mentioned it in my trip report. they fly between 40th and 31st. I guess that is the vector for the line up for the runway at oceana. I personally like The Colony condos down on 13th. we got some noise from the jets but not as much as we did the last stay in up on 36th. I love vb and we are planning on returning next year but at The Colony. You may want to look into a condo rather than a hotel.... we spend approx $300 to $400 less than a hotel for 7 days.
