You might take a look at Marriott's Spring Hill Suites in Lawrence, They do have an indoor pool but I think the breakfast is basically continental style. It is in the downtown area and is within easy walking distance of several restaurants. Topeka is a 50 mile round trip from Lawrence and would add considerable to your gas costs.

I agree with the advice to stay in Lawrence. For Topeka, you would want to go clear to the west side of town, which would make for a long trip. If you can't get into anything at Lawrence, you might consider the Village West area near the Speedway in Kansas City, KS.
