New Orleans Declares Sazerac Its Cocktail of Choice |
|
The Louisiana House of Representatives made a historic decision Monday (6/23): In a 62-33 vote, legislators proclaimed the Sazerac — the famed mix of rye whiskey, bitters and absinthe that originated in the bayou — New Orleans' official cocktail. www.nola.com/news/t-p/capital/index.ssf… www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php… The audio story on NPR was so realistic, I had to make one after listening to it. Cheers. |

Cheers to you, and thanks for posting the news! FINALLY. For anyone who missed Part One of this saga, the Sazerac was originally nominated to be the Official STATE Drink. The proposal was enthusiastically embraced by most Louisianians, who found the idea noble, grand, and festive. The proposal went to the Louisiana Senate, which argued, opined, bloviated, and finally voted it down. One legislator voiced his concern that an official cocktail might encourage alcoholism. The Louisiana citizenry, not surprisingly, wanted to know what beverage the legislator felt would better represent this state.......a glass of warm milk??? In any case, all's well that ends well. The suave and regal Sazerac, invented in the French Quarter and believed by many to be the America's first cocktail, is now the official cocktail of New Orleans. Perfect!

As long as Jindal doesn't get too conservative and continue his new veto trend, then it looks like the Sazerac is officially here to stay.
