I have two different options in my mind to go to Grand Canyon from Seattle. Which one should I pick?

1)Seattle -> Boise -> Salt Lake City -> Las Vegas -> Grand Canyon -> Los Angeles -> San Francisco -> Seattle

2)Seattle -> Redding -> San Francisco -> Los Angeles -> Las Vegas -> Grand Canyon -> back to Las Vegas to go back to Seattle.

* Questions for option 1

a) how's the road condition from Seattle to Salt Lake City?

b) Do you guys think that I can drive to Salt Lake City in one day? I'm thinking about leaving Seattle around 6-7am.

IMO, you don't have the time for such a trip unless an intense flyby. What is the purpose of your trip? If Grand Canyon, I'd choose option 1, perhaps via Zion NP, perhaps another, then to GC. I'd spend a couple of days in Zion and GC, then return home.

Admittedly, LV has no appeal to me, plus it's going to be hot. Very hot. And you will be driving day in and day out.

Road condition? Freeways.

SLC in one day? Up to you. Have you MapQuested it?

If GC is your target, you could fly down, say Phoenix, drive/bus to GC.

Seattle to SLC is pretty much a direct diagonal. It is freeway the whole way: I-90 to I-82 to I-84, stay on that to I-15 and SLC. Much of it is 70 mph speed limit, and some is 75.

I don't remember the exact mileage---it's around 880 miles---but I have driven this in one long day (13 hours).

Fortunately I am not prone to sleepiness at all when driving; I listened to lots of language tapes and NPR.

Did you go? Wondering about the same trip myself. How did it work out? Any tips? What would you do differently?

How many days are you planning for this trip? What are the things you want to see? We completed a 4,700 mile driving trip in April, including GCNP, among other places, but took three weeks to do it.
