I couldn't think of where else to post this; I looked at the Tooele forum and it doesn't get much activity.

Has anyone been to Iosepa? I looked for it once a few years ago, turning off from I-80, and when I had followed my directions to where I thought it should be, I didn't find anything. Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough.

Is anything left there? I read that there is a cemetery and maybe some foundations. Is anything else left to make it worthwhile to see? AFAIK, I'm not connected to anyone there, but my mother was from Hawaii and I have a lot of genealogical work to do, so I can't be sure. Maybe it would be interesting just from a cultural perspective.

Hmmm, Gold Rush Expeditions. That sounds like a California outfit! :D

Yes, Tet, I get to see lots of ghost towns in and around Death Valley and throughout CA. But Iosepa is different. The folks who settled it were searching for God, not Gold.:) It was an oddity among Western settlements (sort of the way Allensworth and Locke are oddities). The settlers were Hawaiian Mormons who had converted in the islands and migrated to Utah to be closer to Zion and have more opportunities for temple worship (there was no temple in Hawaii yet, and temple worship is not the same as Sunday chapel worship which was already happening in Hawaii). The climate didn't agree with them, and after a few years a temple was built in Laie, on the island of Oahu, and most of the folks went back.

The local NBC affiliate here had a report tonight of an archaeological dig at Iosepa.
