Think this is a good plan for June 2009? |
|
I'm trying to get my reservations firmed up for next year and have changed a few things around. 6/24/09 to 7/4/09. We're coming from Philly flying into Bozeman (instead of SLC.) I was surprised that the plane tix were almost the same as SLC + the rental car was hundreds less. Ressies at Old Faithful Inn for 3 nights. Ressies at Canyon Lodge for 3 nights Need to call for ressies at Signal Mountain Lodge for 2 nights Drive around GTNP back into YNP, then drive Beartooth Highway and stay in Red Lodge. I just added this as so many say it's just a beautiful drive. Red Lodge to Bozeman for last night before flying home. Any opinions are appreciated. |

I'd be inclined to move one of the Old Faithful nights to Canyon if its an option. Much easier access to Hayden and Lamar Valleys. Both of them are a pretty good drive from OFI. We drove in to look at Signal Mountain. Looked very nice. Have a nice trip.

I think it's a fine plan without knowing about you or who you are travelling with. I wouldn't change a thing. We're going this Sept. and are planning to stay 5 nights at OFI. I'm more a fan of the thermal features and I LOVE the ambiance of the Inn. You have two good relatively central locations during a busy time.

If the airline and rental car prices are similar, think about flying into/out of Billings instead of Bozeman. That gives you the option of driving the Beartooth highway both ways. You might even find time to drive the Chief Joseph highway.

Oooo, good point - will check into Billings!! I think I checked that, but the air fare was quite a bit more - will give me something to do tonight!!
This trip will be me and my 19 y.o. son. We'll most likely do some light hiking. We're going mostly for all the sightseeing, don't have mountains and animals found in YNP over here in New Jersey. We're also not campers, that's fersure, so we'll mostly be walking around with our mouths open at how beautiful everything is.

One other option might be to fly into Jackson Hole, WY. You would have to revert your route, but sometimes you can get good fares on American or United.

You are doing right in going to red lodge. we went that exact same time and the drive was astonishing. There was a good winter this year and there was 6 foot snow banks in some places. Red lodge was great as well. Nice little town. the nature center was fun as well. AKJ has a point. Old faithful was great. I could spend all day. By staying a couple of nights you can see a few of the big geysers(they have scedules for some) but we seen so most animals in hayden valley and between Roosevelt and mammoth. In Hayden we seen two wolves attack a elk herd. Three bison jams as well as the whole herd crossing the river(all in the evening) and a grizzly. Between Roosevelt and Mammoth we seen 8 black bear and 1 grizzly. So when AKJ talks about the animals, he has a point. It gets addictive and every day we saw something new. Good planing though. Start early and you'll get good values.
