This was our first 'all inclusive' experience as we are usually backpacking and staying in hostels so we don't have many 'hotel' experiences to compare this one to but.....
The hotel was nice - very friendly staff and clean. The pictures of the pools were a bit deceiving - 1 large pool and one very small childrens pool. Most of the loungers being taken before 8am every day! So we headed to the beach most days. Food was ok, a little simple but we still managed to get our monies worth!
The room was clean and spacious. Unfortunatly the fridge in the room didn't work, the wardrobe doors bearly opened and the TV had really poor reception (not any english channels anyway) but all in all we were happy.
The small and personal nature of the hotel means you see the same people regurlaly, we met some great people (you know who you are).
The weather was gorgeous - not what the forecast lead you to beleive. We had 1 rainy day out of 14 which made a perfect shopping day!
We booked the jeep safari with the tour operatours next to the beach bar - it was fantastic value for money and well worth doing. We also went on the snorkelling trip - we were a little disappointed, the coral and fish were nice but were alarmed that no one was warned about stepping on the coral or taking any of the coral from the water! If the continues there will be no reef for people to see! The food on the trip was fantastic but the toilets grim! Try and bag a deal by booking a few tours together.
The beach sellers became too much near the end of the holiday, we ventured to a few different beaches where we had a break from the constant badgering you get on play le Agua. (paraguita very nice) We had particular problems with a 17 year old seller Carlos. He offers to make braclets for you for free to then bugg you the entire holiday!
We were chatting to him trying to find out about their culture etc and he rented us a surf board (really good deal - to good to be true!!) on the first day for the whole 2 weeks and it was the worst thing we could have done. He loitered at the hotel all day wanting to sell us drugs, change dollas for us or pay for a taxi home as he had done us a favor by hiring the surf board! Don't get sucked in - we ended up paying him money to get rid of him (which didn't work) as he started theatening us saying he had a gun and that he would make trouble for us! I am sure this is his nomal scam - please just don't buy anything from him and try not to engage in conversations with him as it will only lead to problems!!
We generally found the island pleasant with some beautiful sceanery but unfortunatly Play el Agua has a lot of rubbish and broken glass. The local people choose not to frequent the beach or the restaraunts, the prices are high and there are much better beaches close by.
We used the local bus on numerous occasions which was much cheaper then taxis, very simple and fun! Taxi divers will try their luck, ask to see the price list which they are obliged to carry
to avoid over charge.
I hope that in time Margarita will become a nicer holiday resort but for us it didn't have the carabeen beaches we expected and the South American vibe was not quie there either. Great place to go if you want to chill out by the pool and get a tan with a few great day trips! - we were told the Coche island was well worth a visit too!
P.S Don't swim in the pool late at night as they clean it then and it's full of chemicals (I am now tinged blonde)!
