Have just spent two weeks with my wife in Portofino, Margarita. I knew it was a developing (underdeveloped) country, I knew the people wouldn't talk English (not my mother language either), I knew I wouldn't have i balcony in my room, I knew it would be hot etc. These should not surprise anyone, you just have to read about your future location in advance.
However, the first night was anyhow a real nightmare for us. There are some rooms in the hotel probably never refurbished, with a loud and ineffective air conditioning, and a freezer making noise like a tractor. We talked to our guide and got another room - with terrace - and had a real good holiday.
About the hotel: the staff is friendly and helpful and they really try to manage with their poor English. And you shouldn't complain about the English in the reception, it is pretty fluent. Learn Spanish instead! There are several bars, no long waiting times, with a good variety of drinks and coffee and tea. The restaurant people make a good work, there is enough variety of food and service is good. And if tired with "restaurant food" there are two snack bars, one with pizzas and one with hot dogs and hamburgers. The rooms were cleaned every day as were the towels changed. No "uninvited creeping pets" in our room. We gave tip to the cleaning lady daily, a 2000 bolivar note on the pillow. Some said it was too much, but for us it was some 60 eurocents. I also gave tip in bars and restaurant several times, although it was all inclusive.
Having come so far we wanted to see a lot and took part in four island trips. The best one was the flight and a day in the coral archipelago Los Roques, I recommend. Also the catamaran trip and swimming on the Isla de Coche was worth it. Even bus trip in Margarita or jeep safari to Macanao peninsula were interesting if not so different from what you see in the Mediterranian. A speciality seems to be that there is always a bar "aboard" and it is opened at every stop serving beer, cuba libre, soft drinks, water etc.
The sun was hot and although we had - we thought - a lot sun lotion with us, we had to buy more. And be careful in spreading
it . One morning I burned my right shoulder during our two hour long promenade for that.
Having all inclusive it is easy to drink a lot but wrong drinks. Do not forget water! One safe way is to really measure the amount of water you drink daily. Use a 1.5 liter bottle to that.
The big disappoinment was the sea. It was still pretty rough and you couldn't swim, only play in the waves, some days a bit risky. This was the fact all over the eastern coast. For us it is important to swim in (salt) sea and that's why made some trips to the western coast and hade a nice day of swimming. A taxi does not in practice cost anything, some five km for less than three euros.
A disturbing thing was, not surprisingly, the poverty. I knew it would be there but to see it with my own eyes was a kind of chock anyway. That made us a bit frightened, going out of the hotel area we kept on the beach of Playa del Agua and only at day time when going out for motion. There were no problems, because tehre were lots of people on the beach.
Some tourists seem to find it unpleasant to have local people around. Strange. Perhaps, because the hotel was filled up during weekwnds, it felt more crowdy all around.
So yes, I could have another holiday in Portofino. But, if going back to Margarita, I would probably choose another hotel in the western coast instead and that because of the sea. What we were told, poblems with the waves are exceptional there. If you like the pool, Portofino is fine.
I just want to thank the staff in Portofino for a good holiday!
