“An Absolutely Fine Place To Enjoy The Grandest Canyon!”

This lodge is your best bet if your on a budget and need a room with 2 dbl. beds. Our party had 4 guys hiking "to the bottom" and back out. I read a bad review about this place and believe it was very undeserved. the rooms are absolutely fine and clean. The dining hall had a huge variety of food at reasonable prices. If your staying with your better half and can share a bed then stay at the Bright Angel Lodge, slightly less expensive and right on the rim. From Maswik, it is about a 5-7 minute walk to the rim, depending where your room is located, as it's spread out over a large area. Remember, this is the Grand Canyon, not Manhattan, the rooms are fine and the cheapest lodging with 2 beds in the park.

“Not Bad”

Our family of 4 (w/2 teens) stayed for 2 nights at Maswick. This is a series of motel-like buildings and cabins on the west end of Grand Canyon Village. Our room was in the Redbud building and was one of the recently remodeled units with AC, which we never needed. I had read several complaints about the location of Maswick but we thought it was perfect. Easy walking distance to the lodge with its cafeteria and shuttle stop (shuttles are free and run every 15 minutes or so). 5 minute walk to the rim, and from there you can follow the path along the rim to the other hotels and attractions within the village.

The room was very spacious and clean, with a nice enclosed shower and vanity area, which included a safe (free to use). There was also a small fridge and iron, hair dryer, etc. The room did have the faint odor of urine, which lessened when we opened the windows. The mattresses were either very old or very cheap, as they sagged to the point of collapse if you sat on the edge or corner.
We appreciated being away from the crowds in the center of the village, but even though I would definitely recommend this lodge for anyone on a budget, if I went back I would stay in one of the other lodges/hotels.

Stayed at Matswick for one night this past weekend. The experience was pleasant, room was spacious and tidy as was the bathroom (I liked separate vanity area). There was a small fridge in the room which is helpful for longer stays. The room did have a slightly stale smell but other than that was fine. Our room had AC (which seems to be was causes the difference in price from $86 for some rooms and $162 for ours). One minute walk to the shuttle and reception/cafeteria/sports bar center. Catalina at the front desk was sweet and helpful and answered all of our questions. Cafateria food was OK, Sports bar has pool tables and decent selection of spirits but I couldn't finish my drink because I saw a small mouse run from behind a video game machine to the bar. Not a huge deal, it is the Grand Canyon, but I thought it worth mentioning.

“A Great Place to Stay”

Maswik Lodge

My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights in December 07. We wanted a place that would serve as a base for a few days exploration of the GC. The Maswik certainly succeeded in this.

On arrival, the reception staff were very friendly and directed us to our room. The Room was of a good standard albeit a bit tired (not one of the newer rooms), however this wasn't a major issue. The room didn't have A/C but as it was pretty cold outside, as long as the heaters worked that was all that mattered! A short 5 minute walk and you are at the Rim, fantastic.

The food was ok, but wasn't great. Good to pick up a quick snack though. There are however enough alternatives around the rim to suit all needs. I would definately recommend the El Tovar for a fantastic dining experience!

We did have a few dodgy lightbulbs but after a call to reception these were fixed straight away. All in all the Maswik served our needs for a quiet, clean base for our stay. I would definately recommend it however don't expect 5 star luxury, but hey who cares, your at the Grand Canyon!!

“Quiet and comfortable”

Maswik Lodge

4 of 5 stars
Lake City, FL
Jun 6, 2008

We stayed at the Maswik Lodge for 3 days in mid-June last summer. Our rooms had AC, fans, good size bathroom, 2 beds and a cot. If it were not for the AC, we would have been very uncomfortable in the evening before going to bed. We walked to the rim, the shuttles were very convenient, yet it was in a quiet location. The only thing I didn't like was that are no accomodations where you can do your own cooking. The cafeterias are so expensive, and the food is always mediocre. We took breakfast foods and packed lunches, otherwise we wouldn't have been able to afford our vacation! After seeing some of the other accomodations, I was very pleased with our location. Even if I had the opportunity, I don't think I would stay anywhere else. We liked being close to the rim, yet out of the main flow of traffic.
