“Kind staff, gorgeous place”

Carlisle Bay Antigua

Carlisle Bay is the most beautiful place; elegant, understated buildings set among a forest of plants and flowers, leading onto a gorgeous beach. The plants are so lush it's like Kew Gardens on sea!
HIghlights for me were breakfast at Indigo on the Beach where you can have a huge and varied breakfast while looking out to sea; Pilates lessons in the pavilion with the amazingly athletic Miranda, who looks like Grace Jones, but is much sweeter natured, tennis lessons with the charming Ken, sailing around the bay and cocktails by the pool.
We went with our children (aged 4 and 1) and they loved it so much that the older one said she wanted to live there for ever. There is a great kids' club where they are looked after so well that our daughter didn't want to leave when we came to get her at lunchtime. They do all sorts of activities, including hunting for crabs.
All the staff at Carlisle Bay, without exception, were incredibly kind to our children. At one point my son fell over on one of the paths. Before I reached him, one of the gardeners had rushed over and picked him up. This was typical of their kindness. Some of the other reviewers who criticise the staff clearly do not understand the Caribbean way, which is not to smile ingratiatingly, but to be extremely kind and patient.
For people who don't have children, they shouldn't be worried that the place is over-run. There are effectively two sections of the beach for children and couples and children are given a (free) supper at 5.30pm so children are out of the way for dinner guests.
Oh, and our baby sitter, Diana, was lovely and put braids in my daughter's hair, which she loved.
My only criticism was that at times it felt a bit international rather than specifically Caribbean, especially as the main restaurant serves (albeit delicious) Asian food. I would have liked it if there were more local dishes on the menu - perhaps a special every day as the menu does not change.
But generally it was the most amazing week and we can't wait to go back.

CL, Primrose Hill.

What a fantastic place, It ticked all the boxes for us. The food was outstanding, with great variation. The pool is stunning and beautifully warm, excellent for my 4year old (and me) The villas are beautifullly presented and serviced twice a day, and the beach is paradise, warm clean sea, and the staff were exceptional. We will definately return, I'd gladly recommend it to anyone. Faultless.

“Hated every minute”

Carlisle Bay Antigua

The worst place I have ever visited!

I booked a week at CB as a surprise for my husband's 50th birthday. We were to arrive on the 13th and I had arranged to fly his 2 daughters out on the 14th for this birthday as another surprise. The holiday was booked last July and everybody knew it was top secret - just a shame that the message did not get through to the rep who revealed to my husband on the morning of his birthday that the girls were arriving later on that day

The hotel was aware of my husband's 50th but nothing was even mentioned.

The hotel is nothing more than a 3* and that's being generous. The only other place that we have been to for total relaxation is Le Tousserok in Mauritius and there is no comparison whatsoever between the two.

Service was appalling - but then when the service charge of 14.5% is mandatory why do they need to try. Food choice limited and cold, staff had bad attitudes and were lazy. At a place like this and for what you pay - nothing should be too much trouble and you should only have to ask once for anything not 5/6 times.

We had a first floor beach suite with a palm tree blocking our view of the bay.

We had to ask 3 times and wait 2 days for a highchair. There are no curtains in the spare bedroom which was used for our 20 month old son. Again we asked various different people 8 times and still nothing.

The whole place needs to be closed down for a complete makeover and the staff all need to be sent on a hospitality course. They could certainly afford to do this with the prices they charge.

I just felt completely cheated as this was supposed to be a wonderful holiday for my husband's 50th - and all it turned out to be was a holiday from hell and one we would rather forget.

It was our first trip to the Carribean but can honestly say it puts us off from ever returning

“The most exquisite hotel”

Having visited Carlisle Bay twice recently, we cannot understand how there have been any negative reports about this hotel.

When we visited the hotel for the first time, we found the whole experience so fantastic that we returned for our honeymoon and would have no hesitation in returning again in the future, hopefully later this year.

The hotel was in a beautiful location in a secluded bay. The welcome we received on arrival was warm and friendly and the service throughout our stay was excellent. Our room was a fabulous size, beautifully decorated, with uninterrupted views of the ocean and was kept spotlessly clean by the staff.

There were many small touches that made our stay even more special - fresh fruit was placed in the room each day, chilled almond-scented flannels were brought to the guests on the beach along with plates of cut fruit, and large shells filled with water allowed you to rinse the sand from your feet before entering your suite.

With regard to children, we didn't have any on either of our visits but would now certainly go with our young daughter. The Kids Club looked great, the beach was safe and the children that were there were having a wonderful time.

If you want a relaxed holiday in a first class location, it would be great shame to miss this hotel.

“a break from reality”

I am in the process of booking a winter holiday and have been recommended this web-site but I have to say I am a little sceptical about some of the opinions! I went to Carlisle Bay for a family holiday recently and had ten fantastic days there so was interested in seeing the comments. I was rather astonished to see negative feedback for what was one of the best holidays we have ever had. The location and beach are out of this world, and the hotel fantastic. I have been to a number of other venues in the Caribbean and found the staff here the best by quite some margin. No orders were mixed up, the service was prompt and friendly and the room service we received at 4.30am on the first morning was far in excess of what anyone could have expected.

The hotel seems to be split pretty much 50/50 between kids or couples (we were with the former) which works well including in the restaurants where, for example, children were up early and breakfasted before the grownups.

We, along with most parents, would give our children tea which was free, (a nice touch) at 5pm or 6pm, by which time the children were pretty wiped out. We ate in the restaurants a few times but generally had room service because it saved coming back to check on the children. Either way, the standard was exceptional on all counts.

Most of the children were all best friends within about half an hour of the first day and, personally, we didn’t find any use for the kids club because they were fully occupied on the beach and in the sea. There was no tide to speak of and it wasn’t steeply shelving so we felt fairly safe here. The sand was clean and fine and the sea crystal clear. Just heaven to swim in.

Overall I thought the hotel was fantastic and the manager, who I met on a couple of occasions, was only too happy to solve any problems just as long as he found out about them then! The beach staff were there if you wanted them and unobtrusive which, personally, I prefer.

Couldn't recommend Carlisle Bay highly enough and have attached two photographs
