“Ok stay at Dian Bay”

Dian Bay Resort & Spa

I stayed at Dian Bay with my husband, sister in law and her husband for a week over New Year Jan 2007.

The hotel was ok - our rooms were very basic but were cleaned every day and we had an ocean view room and nice balcony.

We had booked a "spa room" package through Virgin Holidays (at an extra cost) but upon attempting to book our treatments we were told that the spa could only fit us in for a couple of treatments each when in fact we had paid for 5 each. I arrived for my massage and was shown through to the treatment room, which was untidy and dirty, there was a huge pile of dirty towels thrown on the floor and the "therapist" used olive oil straight from the bottle - lovely! The hotel then claimed they had no record of us having paid for our spa treatments and tried to make us pay again - which we refused and the remainder of our treatments were cancelled - this was no great pity as the spa was dreadful - Virgin holidays have since refunded us for this error.

The a/c unit in our room was very loud and overheated one night setting off an alarm which we couldn't turn off - we called the front desk to ask them for help and the "security guard" was extremely reluctant to come and help us - he eventually turned up 30 mins later (3.30am!) by which time my husband had sorted the problem (by turning the machine off for the remainder of the night!).

The hotel is miles away from anything and it's around a 40 min drive to go out to eat - which we did a couple of times as although we were on the all inclusive package we wanted to eat out to see what the rest of the island had to offer and the hotel only has one restaurant with limited food options. We visited a resturant at English Harbour for a meal and also the Cocoa Bay hotel - both meals were fantastic and much better than anything we'd eaten at Dian Bay.

I would highly reccomend the around the island catamaran day trip which was excellent.

I would not return to this hotel as I found it too basic and did not like the isolated location but would return to Antigua as I thought it was a beautiful island.

“Hated it!”

Dian Bay Resort & Spa

We usually visit the Carribean for one week in the winter and this time me made a terrible mistake when we booked at Dian Bay Resort. For starters, this is no resort. The beach is tiny, almost non-existent. And you can forget about Lover's Beach. Not only is the construction defeaning, but there are pools of dirty water in the brush leading down from the road that are disgusting. The food is horrible -- I ordered a crabmeat salad the first afternoon we were there and to my surprise got that fake crab stuff...on a Carribean Island??!!. Our room was rundown but adequate, and a/c was so loud, some nights we chose to sleep with the glass doors open. Luckily we rented a car and although the Island of Antigua is not user friendly -- the roads are a mess and there are no signs that correspond to anything on a map -- we did manage to find a few lovely restaurants and lots of friendly people. We chose to go down to Long Beach each day, which was a 5 min drive down the road towards Pineapple Beach. Although we paid everyday for an umbrella and chairs, it was worth it to get away from Dian Bay.

“Very secluded - fabulous holiday”

Dian Bay Resort & Spa

What a fabulous setting! very secluded, lovely (small but more than adequate) beach, very spacious rooms with huge terraces. We booked a garden/pool view room but still ended up being able to see a fair chunk of the turquoise bay. Hint- we managed to book bed and full breakfast through Hotelopia - very reasonably. I could not see this tariff anywhere else - it was either all inclusive or room only. In fact we booked the flights, hotel and a hire car separately for the price of a room only package - definitely worth the effort as I think a car is really useful given the remote location and lack of restaurants in the vicinity, especially during quiet season (May-Oct). Agree with previous reviews but I think we perhaps just do not quite understand the Caribbean attitude. However I do think the hotel is missing a trick (in fact several) and should promote itself more. At least the previous people were aware there was a Manager's cocktail party - we only happened on this by chance as we chose to eat in that night - nothing was advertised. Big plus is no children. If you want a complete chill out without being too commercial, this is the place. Antigua is not huge on character, but climate is gorgeous. Nelson's Dockyard and St Johns both worth a visit. Catamaran trip round the Island is a must - we did the Excellence trip and would definitely recommend it. Re building works - no noise disturbance but this is a big low rise hotel development- unsure just how crowded it will make the bay but do not let it put you off going there.
