My wife and I just got back from an 8 day trip to sunny Aruba. Dates stayed were June 14th through the 22nd, 2008. This is the 3rd time to the island and 2nd stay at Manchebo(first time was a cruise ship stop in 2005, then a weeks stay in Nov. 2006).
First off, the folks at Manchebo are just great. We found the staff very accommodating. We aren't exactly high maintenance, but we like it nice and clean and found Manchebo to be in great shape.
The new gym was a nice feature, I used it twice to off-set the chocolate cake I consumed nearly nightly. The pool is clean, but its just a pool, not large or "modern"-this is the only negative I see about this resort. But honestly, I don't go to Aruba or other "beach" locations for the pool, I go for the OCEAN. On that note I can't say enough about Manchebo Beach! It is huge, it is clean, it is beautiful. Plenty of huts to go around. Watching the locals do their "thing" on the wave boards was very cool. Oh yeah, if you didn't know, ALL the beaches in Aruba are public. But there is plenty of space here as opposed to the High Rise area where it's kind of tight.
The Pega Pega beach bar was rocking most everyday with Holland in the Euro Cup and all. It was fun rooting on the home team. Fanny will set you up with something delicious, or strong, or both!
We ate at the Italian Restaurant and the French Steakhouse once apiece. Enjoyed both meals very much, the service was fantastic. Be prepared to "enjoy" your meals in Aruba-meaning: don't expect a fast meal. Two hours was common all week, and we ate somewhere different each night(several places in the high rise area too). It's just the way things are done there. (Like I had a meeting to catch or something! HA!)
Our room was clean and was serviced daily. What a great staff. I recognized several folks from the last time we stayed there.
A little about the island. It has beautiful beaches, but it also has some other stunning elements. The north coast is worth a 4x4 rental to go exploring(trust me, you want a 4x4). We rented a jeep for the week and cruised to the national park, down to Baby Beach, up to lighthouse and over to the Chapel, just everywhere. It's true, you can get around using the bus system and taxis, but they don't go off-roading. And to me, that is where some of the most beautiful places on the island can be found. Consider it at least for a day.
