This is an excerpt from my overall review of my Aruba trip from 6/14/08 to 6/21/08. You can find the whole review in the Aruba forums link.

Radisson Aruba - mixed reviews on this place. Paid the internet “HotDeal” of $235 per per night instead of the next cheapest deal of $275 per night knowing that this is the offseason and that they would probably give me a pool/”ocean-view” room, which they did, therefore saving about 300 bucks (after bullshit taxes) on the trip. However, I have several positives and negatives to report:

Positives: Great attitude by staff, very friendly. Great pool and beach and they were not crowded. Victor the “bird-man” and his parrots. The poker room. Free internet is nice and was about 1.5M down/.7up per second on average.

Negatives: Main elevator to Guest rooms was shut down during my stay leaving access to my room available only by the service elevator which appeared to be like a Motel 6 at the entry way. Later in the trip I was awakened (during a hangover recovery brought on while losing a few hundred at their main casino the night before) at 9am by the sound of drilling and pounding hammers as workers repaired the main elevator just down the hall from my room. After calling the front desk to no avail and then confronting the workers personally (which resulted in about an hour of silence before they started again), I was rewarded with a (expletive deleted) fruit basket and a written apology. And this is supposed to be a 5-star hotel? Give me a break. Their rooms are small and fairly clean, but the beds are not 5 star. Also, very hard to believe for a $300 per night room they come equipped with an old 27” tube TV instead of a plasma. Finally, the in-room safe SUCKED. I had to call security 3 times to get my damn passport and cash out because the electronic interface would not release the door.

The Radisson needs work. I will probably stay at the Hyatt next time.

The Radisson Casino – Table games are fine, but the staff are dicks. The roulette dealer yelled at me for picking my money up too early after hitting a number even though I was down about 400 bucks. Also, they don’t serve you anything you want in the casino. If you want a Bud Light, you have to pay for it. The only free beer is Balashi on draft (not a fan). The girl next to me got into it with them when they wouldn’t give her a Miller Lite and she was also down several hundred. This casino sucks.

The Radisson Poker room – Great room, friendly staff, you can have whatever you want to drink here. The poker room is run by a different company than the casino. Good action too…I played mainly 5-5-10 no-limit and came home about +$650.

“Pleasant Stay at the Radisson”

I stayed at the Radisson with my wife and infant son. All in all, it was a nice place to stay.

* Property - Very nice, especially the pools and beachfront
* Staff - Great. We were there for a family wedding, so the staff was very nice and accomodating.
* Rooms - Decent. Our carpet was a little dirty (due to high traffic), but the rooms were nice.

The only negative comment I had was that the bar serves the weakest drinks. :)

“Easy, Relaxing Vacation”

Radisson Aruba Resort, Casino & Spa

Overall: I would recommend the Radisson Aruba. We enjoyed our stay and Aruba is an easy island to visit.

Service: Very good. Everyone was polite and accommodating and quick to respond to our requests. No complaints at all.

Spa: The spa was very nicely done and very relaxing. I booked a massage in the evening which was pretty good. Unfortunately I think I booked the last appointment of the day because the steam room and sauna were turned off by the time my massage was finished. The gym was well equipped but they didn’t allow you access to the spa locker rooms which was a bit of a bummer.

Rooms: We were in the Aruba tower and although the room was a bit outdated and a little worn it was exceptionally clean, which is all I cared about as we didn’t spend that much time in it anyway! We had a fantastic view of the ocean and the grounds and awoke promptly at 8:30AM every morning when they uncovered the parrots. They make quite the racket in the morning. We didn’t mind though because we wanted to get to the beach! We ordered a fridge to be delivered to our room the first day we were there. A quick taxi ride to the grocery store and we stocked up on wine, beer & cheese. Worth it as the price of a bottle of wine is quite pricey at the resort. You can pick up a little cooler as well to bring your beverages to the beach.

Grounds/Beach: The Radisson definitely had the best beach and nicest grounds. It seemed like they had the most amount of beachfront of all the resorts around it. You didn’t feel crowded or on top of people. We reserved a palapa everyday but you probably don’t need to wait in line at 4PM everyday to get one as long as you don’t mind being a little farther back from the water. Pools were also clean and a good temperature although I wish they had a hot tub somewhere on the grounds!

Restaurants: We ate breakfast everyday at Laguna which was okay. It was included as part of the package we purchased but it got boring after a couple days. Gilligan’s was our usual for lunch…good burgers, fish sandwiches and you can’t beat the 2 for 1 drinks during happy hour! We ate at Sunset Grille twice. Both times my meal was great (sea bass the first time, lamb chops the second) but my husband’s veal on our first visit was a bit overdone and over seasoned for his liking. We loved the “lobby” bar. Great martinis and there was usually a good jazz musician playing most nights.

Other Restaurants: Madam Janettes is a must do. We loved the ambience and the food. We also liked Texas de Brazil. Come hungry because it’s A LOT of food. We ate at Salt n’ Pepper one night which is right across the street and was reasonably priced but like its name, the food was a bit too salty. We also dined at the Italian restaurant Gianni’s right across the street from the Radisson which was okay, nothing special. Avoid Blossoms at the Westin…while the food was okay, the service was lacking. We ordered sushi and waited an hour for it. Try Japanego at the Hyatt instead.

Last Thoughts: We rented a car one day to drive around the island. We visited Baby Beach and the Natural Bridge. I didn't think it was worth the effort and time but it was something different to do one day.

“Sunset Grill - SKIP IT”

Radisson Aruba Resort, Casino & Spa

Went to the Sunset Grill at the raddison and had the worst meal of my life.

Fish smelled and was old. Sent it back. Ordered a red snapper and they put Grouper in front of us and tries to tell us it was Red Snapper.

Took one bite and it too was spoiled.

Both my wife and I got REAL sick that night.

At one time that place was good but don't do it. You'll be sorry!!!!!

“Great Hotel!!!”

I just got back from a 5 night stay at the Radisson Aruba Resort and had a fantastic time! Like all the reviews say, the Radisson has a great section of the beach with plenty of palapas. The gym is small, but adequate (treadmills, weights, stair climbers). The service and all of the employees were wonderful. Everyone was very nice and helpful. Someone is available at all times.

The weather was perfect. It did not feel hot even though the temperature was in the 90s everyday.

De Palm Pier is right next to the hotel where you can book tours and hang out at the bar. We took the snorkeling happy hour boat ride from there and had a great time. The trip had 2 snorkeling areas--the first was at the Antilles shipwreck and was very rough. I couldn't handle this one and barely got my head under water long enough to see anything. The second location was closer to the shore and much smoother.

Got drinks from Gilligans twice--the food was quite good. Had breakfast at Lagunas once--it was ok. There are restaurants to the left as you leave the hotel. Salt and Pepper was pretty good. Casa Tua--not so great. There are even more restaurants and shops if you continue walking.

When visiting Aruba, I would recommend the beach, pools, and water sports. Skip Oranjestad, shopping and casinos.
