We were very impressed with the RIU (it was the best all-inclusive resort we have experienced...compared to Jamaica (Breezes & Ciboney), Bahamas (Radisson-cable beach), and Cancun (Cancun Palace)) we thought the food, service, and accommodations were excellent and well above the standards of the AI's previously mentioned. The gourmet restaurant food (we tried all 4) was outstanding...we never had a mediocre meal. The buffet food was also very good with a huge variety to choose from. The room (junior suite, tower B, facing the Westin) was very spacious with a true king size bed (not 2 beds pushed together), and the bathroom was large enough to accommodate us getting ready at the same time - room was cleaned well each day, and the beverages in the frig (water, soda, beer, champagne) were replenished as they were used. Food/bar servers were very accommodating. Pool area was beautiful and the beach was amazing...both cleaned daily.
Mystery of the wind: during the first 3 days we did experience wind-gusts that created the "sand blasting" effect - being pelted with sand. We grew up on the New Jersey beaches, and as beach-goers we're used to this situation...but I must say, I don't enjoy it! The remainder of our stay we experienced no more "sand blasting" wind gusts, just a constant breeze...and without the breeze the sun would be sizzling.
We rented a Jeep for the day and toured the island: Lighthouse, Chapel, Gold Smelts Ruins, Natural bridge, and Natural pool (wow, the drive to the natural pool was pretty hairy--never could've found it if I didn't follow an ATV tour) Aruba needs to do a much better job of placing signs for roads or scenic places - actually, I don't recall any signs telling us how to get to any of the places we toured - just kept driving along dirt roads while crossing my fingers!! And the map that Thrifty gave us was USELESS.
Disliked: We just wish SMOKING was banned inside...went to the sports bar for the football game Sunday night and was overwhelmed with smoke, being from Jersey I have thick skin and was able to stick it out (I realize this isn't unique to the RIU). You could also notice smoke in the Lobby area...fortunately, we didn't notice the smell of smoke in our room, but it was apparent in the hallway. No smoking allowed in the restaurants :) Also, thought the pool (7pm) and the pool/beach bar (6pm) closed much too early. Getting up by 7 am to reserve a palapa is not my idea of fun (many people would leave the palapa for several hours but left their belongings anyway--so we just placed our loungers in the sand and soaked up the SUN). Restaurant reservations: after waiting in line for 40 minutes to make a restaurant reservation, I quickly realized that if you went down between 9:15 and 9:30 am there was no line, but still open seating at the restaurants.
We would go back to the RIU/Aruba in a heartbeat.
