My husband and I just returned from a four night stay at the Riu Palace and it was okay. It was not the best vacation we've had, but it also wasn't the worst. I must point out though that this was our first time in Aruba and we didn't know much about it except that it was outside the hurricane belt. I was worried about the hurricane season, so we opted to go to Aruba instead of the Caribbean. I think, at the end, we just didn't enjoy Aruba as much.
I thought that since the Aruban landscape is supposed to be mostly desert, that the air would be arid, but it was actually really humid. We had a nice ocean view Jr Suite at the Riu, but the humid ocean air combined with the air conditioner made everything feel...clammy. We thought about asking to change rooms, but we came to the conclusion that it was the ocean air, not the room causing it, so we stayed put. The room was very nice though and we loved being able to sit out on the balcony and just watch the ocean. Besides the clamminess, the room was clean and seemed relatively new, which made me feel a bit better about it. The one thing that I did find odd though was that the tub wasn't reinforced completely on the bottom. There was a section on the opposite end of the faucet that buckled under my weight and I'm not a heavy person. I just didn't stand on that part of the tub for too long, but it was odd and surprising for a four star hotel.
I didn't encounter any staff member that was unpleasant or unwilling to help when asked, but i wasn't blown away by the hospitality either. I expected beach butlers to take drink orders, but didn't see any. I thought that that was just a given with AIs and missed that bit of luxury. The hotel was not at full capacity, far from it from what I could tell, and I never felt like I was really being taken care of like I have at other AIs. I would just give the overall service an okay.
The food was just okay also. We only made reservations at the steakhouse and was both very disappointed. They made the ceasar salad too salty and just charred the lobster beyond recognition. Both our steaks were also overcooked and just dry. the best thing about that dinner was the rolls. They were different from the ones in the buffet and were very tasty. After that, we just stuck with the buffets. They weren't great, but I felt like the a la carte restaurants had so much of a gourmet veneer, that it made the food more disappointing. At least at the buffet, we had more choices and there was always something that was pretty good. My husband is also a picky eater, and the menus for the restaurants were so small, that they didn't have stuff he would like.
The beach was really nice though and the sunsets were beautiful. We got tired of the towel game for the palapas though. Some of the people never showed up and I just did not understand that. We actually never got to enjoy one, but we were able to find a nice palm tree to put a couple of chairs under and that was nice. The water was really cold and so salty. It made it a bit harder to swim in, at least with our eyes open. We went on a snorkeling trip where the boat took us to three sites and served us lunch. We both loved the excursion and highly recommend it. We booked it through DePalms tours and we both agreed that the people were great and the food on the boat was better than at the resort.
We chose the Riu because it was a newer hotel and we wanted an AI. Reading the other reviews on here, I believe that we made the right decision to stay at the Riu, but I'm not sure that I would stay there again. But to be fair, I don't think we will be going back to Aruba. There are just too many other islands for us to try.
