We stayed at the Westin 6/8/08-6/13/08 and was very nervous at first after reading all the negative reviews on this site and others. However, my boyfriend and I found our stay to be quite pleasant and had a lovely time.
We checked in and decided to upgrade to an oceanview room because we were given an odd-number room and knew from the reviews that these were island-view. We were given the option to upgrade to a jr. suite for the same price as an ocean view so we took the upgrade.
This hotel isn't as fancy or as festive as the others on the strip (Riu, Radisson, Occidental) but it's a solid hotel; the staff was more than friendly, taking care of anything we asked for (extra razors, contact lens solution, dinner reservations, advice on restaurants) especially when I got a sun rash, they were very quick to direct me to the pharmacy and let me know not to worry, it was a quite common thing that happens, etc.
The restaurants at the hotel was expensive but that can only be expected. The food at Blossoms was pretty good, although it's basically overpriced take out.. and we had breakfast at Bon Bini most days because it was the most convenient with the most selection. It would have been nice to have more variety and different things everyday, but the food was good.
The only bad dining experience I had was actually at the Sunset Grille at the Radisson. It was completely overpriced and the food absolutely subpar. The only good part of the meal was the gorgonzola scallop potatoes we ordered as a side to the ribeye steak. The steak was pretty flavorless and my asian inspired salmon/scallop combo was way overcooked and the combination of flavors did not work together. The service however, was very good.
The Westin has a lot of family/kid oriented activities which would have been great if I were, or if I had kids. Being a couple in our twenties, there weren't many activities for us to participate in at the hotel, but we were busy doing our own thing.
We reserved Palapas every morning without a problem, right in the front, because I'm an early riser. The towel hut opens at 7am, and you can reserve it then, but even around 10am there are plenty of palapas left. To reserve before hand, I believe it was $30 for the front, then $25 for the middle. A lot of $$ so I'd rather wake up early, reserve the hut and go back to sleep. Just be sure to occupy the palapa by 11:30am or they may give it away to someone else.
On the next visit to Aruba, we will probably try the Riu or Radisson for their more festive, lively environments, but the Weston is a good hotel (especially for the promotional price we booked it) and not at all horrible like the other reviews I've read.
