With hotels in Hamilton becoming very pricey, this is the second year I've stayed in the cottages at Fourways Inn. Traveling with a business associate, we take a two-bedroom cottage with a one-bedroom suite on the first level, which includes a comfortable living room, and a separate bedroom/bath upstairs, with its own lockable door, that is reached by an inclosed stairway so that its entrance is totally independent of the downstairs suite. The living room makes a good place for quiet conversation as well as occasional business meetings. There are only 11 cottages, so their arrangement around a pool is very private and intimate.
The cottages are nice but not elegant, clean and reasonably well maintained. I agree with their AAA 4-diamond rating. Comparing Fourways Inn cottages to other places I've tried in over 20 years of business travel to Bermuda, I'd say it ranks with the better but not the best. The beds are comfortable, furnishings attractive and in good repair, housekeeping is efficient and effective at keeping the rooms clean and orderly. Overall, the rates at Fourways Inn represent a good value for what is provided.
One of the major advantages of staying at Fourways Inn is their restaurant, situated in a building part of which is an historic home dating to 1727. The restaurant is one of the best on the island, reflected in their prices. They also have a very attractive bar, the Peg Leg Lounge. It has a very intimate room that is separated from a larger room by an old fireplace that was a part of the original home's kitchen. There's another fireplace in the larger room, lending an ambience of warmth and charm.
They have recently installed WiFi in the Peg Leg Lounge with a signal that can sometimes be accessed in the cottages, but you're better off finding a quiet corner in the lounge with your laptop. Other than evenings, the lounge is typically vacant.
Taxi into Hamilton can be a bit of a challenge during morning traffic and should be arranged the evening before. The Darrell's Wharf ferry stop, which takes you to Hamilton in 10 minutes, is only about a 10 minute walk down the hill from Fourways Inn. The ferry service is fairly punctual and a pleasant as well as efficient alternative to taxis. The ferry terminal in Hamilton is also a very short walk to many of the major insurance companies and other business venues, actually a shorter walk than from the Hamilton Princess.
Service at the Fourways Inn cottages is friendly and pleasant, particularly if you begin your conversation with the traditional Bermudian "good morning" or "good day" or "good evening," as the case may be, and are pleasant and courteous in making requests. Breakfast of good coffee (or tea), pastries and fresh fruit is good and adequate. Unfortunately, fresh juice was dropped from the standard breakfast fare this year.
For two business associates, this is a great value and a pleasant alternative to two rooms at a hotel. Same could be said for two couples traveling together or a family with children, when you want to give the children some independence in their accommodations.
The cottage manager, Alex Rech, is very friendly, outgoing and helpful.
