We’ve just got back from a really nice week at Southern Palms Beach Resort at St Lawrence Gap Barbados.
It did start on a bit of a “low” as it seems that all incoming planes for the day all arrive within a few minutes of each other meaning there are monstrous queues to get through immigration and we were not very impressed that after having been told by the Virgin air steward that one immigration form is enough if you have the same surname and live at the same address, when we got to the front of the queue (1hr 45 mins later) we were told we needed one each. Fortunately we filled in another form and were allowed back in at the front of the queue. However the views of the island on the way to our hotel soon put us back in chill out mode. The view as you walk to the reception of this hotel is nothing short of breath taking, and it gets better as you walk through to the pool & beach. We booked an ocean view suite, which included a kitchenette and were very happy with the very spacious accommodation and the wonderful views from the balcony at the front and the huge terrace from the upper floor that gave an almost 360o views. We couldn’t imagine better accommodation from these respects. It wasn’t the best maintained place I have ever stayed in but at 3* in the Virgin brochure I think this is fair. It was very clean and the complementary rum & coke and small “starter pack” of a few slices of bread, butter jam, tea, coffee & juice is a nice touch. Something that isn’t clear from the Virgin brochure or SPBR website they do supply beach towels which you can change as often as you like (between 9& 5) at the water sports room & providing you return them undamaged there is no charge. There is entertainment at the hotel a couple of times a week but generally life seems to be very much “early to bed early to rise” at the hotel. There are a number of places with later night life elsewhere on the Gap. Don’t miss going to Oistins, on Friday evenings. Loads of places to eat, market stalls, music (sadly “only” records when we were there) and as the evening goes on there’s a dance off on stage. Its good to see a interesting night out that isn’t staged for tourists.
Dover beach, at the hotel is great. While we were there the waves were fairly big and great fun but the back pull is worrying at times, so its not a good breach for kids. I’m not sure if it varies much during the year. We went to Cobblers and Folkstone beaches which were both more suitable for snorkeling. However the turtles seem to quite like the surf at SPBR as we saw some everyday bobbing about just a wave away from us. I think everything else you need to know is available on website for the hotel. Few general tips: Do use the local buses, either the “normal” buses or the more local small buses or better still the mini buses that really shouldn’t be missed. Each cost a flat rate of B$1.50 per trip, (less than 40p) regardless of how far you go, they want exact fare on the big buses but the mini buses will give you change. Do try some of take away food from huts about the place; it seems the only place to find real local food, which is wonderful. There is a small convenience store just a couple of mins walk to the left as you come out of SPBR, or the bigger Dover Market which is a fair bit bigger and is only about 5-7 mins walk if you turn right out of SPBR. Fish on Barbados is probably the nicest I’ve tasted anywhere. We didn’t use any of the food stalls/carts that open along The Gap in the evenings but there were very popular and a much cheaper option than a using restaurant every evening. All the restuaruants we tried around the Gap were very nice and about the same price as you’d pay in UK. Like everywhere these days there are lots of people working the beaches & bars selling all sorts of goods and services, and as with most other places a polite but firm “no thanks” means they move on. Having seen some older photos of SPBR on Trip Adviser it seems the rough gravel/tiles on the floor of the place has been given a face lift of rubber flooring which is nice & smooth and fine to walk around on with nothing on your feet, although naturally it goes get a bit hot at midday.
