“Beautiful resort, exellent stay without problems”

Club Amigo Varadero

Nolitours in Canada (Transat) calls this Cameleon Club Amigo Varadero. We stayed in the second week of June, in the bungalows (Hacienda section). This is the off season, and the resort was largely empty. We had a fantastic time, the bungalow room was beautiful and large, the resort was clean, service was prompt and friendly. The beach is second to none, actually one of the better spots compared to other Varadero resorts --- having seen many beaches in my life (Caribbean and Mediterranean), I can honestly say this is one of the most impressive beaches I have ever experienced.

Nothing went wrong or bothered us at this resort, but I think we might have been lucky in some respects.

BEACH -- The whole Varadero strip is one of the nicest beaches you will ever see, clear water, shallow, sandy, calm and no seaweed or garbage. Even domestic tourists from Cuba were there. But Club Amigo also has a particularly nice beach in front of it, as we discovered when walking along the beach. It is spacious, not crowded, abundance of beds and shade, and an excellent beach bar (with hot snacks too). For the beach, this resort gets 100% grade. We spent hours on the beach, both in the day and at night watching the stars (clear sky, you can see the Milky Way galaxy and shooting stars --- it is mind blowing).

BUNGALOW ROOM -- We booked a package in the bungalow (hacienda) section and went specifically because of that room type. The bungalows are spacious, with a living room and then a big bedroom. The bathroom is large, there is a shower and tub. The whole room was modern, clean, with a nice balcony. It was superior to what we expected, with one exception, not very much hot water available for bathing. There was a small fridge, which worked and was useful for storing water. I asked tourists who stayed in the main hotel about their room, and they had no complaints either.

LOCATION -- The bungalows are closer to the beach, about 200 m distance on average, as opposed to the main hotel rooms which are at least 400 m from the beach. We got lucky and were very close to the beach, 150 m away. The buffet restaurant (for 3 daily meals) is back in the main hotel area, but it is an easy and pleasant walk day or night. Everywhere is quite close, you do not cross any streets. Yes you can safely walk around and drink all night.

RESORT -- The grounds are kept very clean, well maintained. The main building is clean and looks spectacular for a building of its age. We were impressed. We passed other resorts on the way which looked more run down. Yes, there are resorts that look better than Club Amigo but this is NOT one of the run down lower quality ones. The pool is in excellent shape, walk ways are clean, there is no garbage. The whole resort is attractive. Yes it is 24 hour service including drinks and even snacks (sandwiches), at the bar in the hotel all night.

FOOD -- We had no problems with the food, one of the nicest surprises for us. We did not get sick, and ate plenty (we gained weight). The food was both interesting and there was a significant variety. My guess is that if you are comfortable with non-American (and non-English) food then you will like what they have. The cheese tastes different, and the rice is Cuban-Caribbean. There was plenty of fish and vegetables. Other meats were somewhat less impressive, but still more than adequate. The fruit, seasonal, is nice though limited variety. If you eat a limited range of food (fast food or meats) then you may be disappointed. But if you are comfortable with a wide range of foods then you may, like myself, find yourself in a little bit of heaven. This is a personal taste issue, but there is nothing inherently wrong with their food -- it is prepared nicely and is tasty. We loved it, but other friends of ours complained.

OTHER TIPS -- Water is available, bring your own bottle and staff at the bars will fill it with filtered water. Room housekeeping can be tipped maybe 1 CUC a day. At the bar or restaurant, tips are not expected but we gave 0.25 CUC on occasion. Bring an insulated drinking mug for your drinks. From May onwards bring insect repellent, there are mosquitos in June. Bring a flashlight to help you navigate paths at night (beach or road). Have snack food from home like cookies etc.

FLIGHT -- Nolitours really treated us well. They took our request for a large bed and bungalow near the beach, and fulfilled both (no guarantees of course). The Skyservice flight staff was helpful and very friendly. I was very impressed. There was food on the flight. Because it was the off season, the flight was half empty and this may have helped us have a good experience.

Overall, I can hardly think of any complaints. It would have been nice to have more hot water in the shower. And more drink variety would be nice. But the resort exceeded my expectations, and I think the reviews I read are biased to the negative side, or many people are much pickier than I am.

Myself, my husband and 2 sons stayed at Club Amigo, Varadero from the 10th May - 23rd May 2008. We stayed in the Bungalows, which were great size, living area and seperate bedroom and balcony. Rooms were cleaned daily. Service staff were always very friendly. Food was adequate. Excellent meal at the cuban restaurant, and a good meal at the italian. We had a great holiday being situated so close to the pool and beach and would recommend this holiday to anyone who wants to experience the caribbean on a budget.

“Great Trip!!!!!”

Booked via the Filght Centre in Etobicoke - Ashley rocks!!!

The Hotel is beautiful with immaculate grounds and wonderful staff for the most part - unfortunatly the Frontdesk staff is the least helpful. Otherwise word of thumb "You'll be treated the way you treat others" If your rude and obnxous? Guess how you'll be treated!!!!!

The Beach area at Club Amigo Varadero is HANDS DOWN the widest and most beautiful of all the resorts on this particular strip area - The entertainment staff is out there from 7am - 2-3pm when they move over to the Pool.......They rock and do all they can to enlist participation and laughs!!! Joel - Jorge made our stay even better with their Hello's and smiles always at the ready.

The Pool - stunning - absolutely beautiful!!! Relax early in the day be prepared for some fun courtesy of the Entertainment staffs arrival later in the afternoon !!!!

Food: I have never been on a FOOD vacation and certainly would no better then to put Cuba on my list if THATS the type of vacation I was looking for - You won't starve and bottom line YOUR NOT COOKING!!!!! Its simple pared down food - not the best and certainly not the worst. Marlena our hand picked waitress greeted us with the biggest friendliest smile EVERY single time we saw her and made hitting the buffet line a pleasure!

Over all I had the tropical vacation of my dreams! And thanks to Cuba & Club Amigo I will not again be waiting 30yrs before my next vacation.

“Don't go there!!”

Club Amigo Varadero

We had spent 4 fantastic days in the Comodoro Bungalows in Havana then transferred to the Hotel Club Amigo in Varadero. I urge you to believe all the negative reviews about this hotel - it IS dirty (they do not use any chemicals to clean the rooms) the staff are NOT helpful or pleasant in any way. There were dead cockcroaches on our room floors - they were stuck to the floors so had been there some time. There was hair all over the room floors, the tables had spilt drinks and food crumbs on them and the drawers were so dirty we could not put our clothes in them. There was a used razor blade left in one of the drawers. We asked to be moved to another room and that was just as bad. My partner and I contracted gastro enteritis on day 2. He collapsed on our bathroom floor. The phone in our room wasn't answered so I had to run to reception for help. When I asked the reception staff to get me a doctor (the Rep told us there were medical facilities.....there isn't) the hotel staff told me I would 'have to take him to town' for treatment. When I explained he was sick and had collapsed they couldn't have given a t.ss. I asked to speak to our rep, the receptionist in the phone office, said she couldn't make a call until I had paid for it. Eventually, after a very distressing few minutes of my pleeding with her and after I said I would pay her later (I had run to the reception from our room (5 mins away) without my purse) she rang the holiday company's office in Havana. They sorted everything for me and a doctor came within 30 minutes. After 3 hours, the cleaner, that I had requested to clean our bathroom, arrived. She simply turned on the shower, sprayed the bathroom floor and then swept the resulting mess down the plughole set in the bathroom floor. No anti bacterial spray was used, no bleach or disinfectant.........I am really concerned about what might have become of the next occupants of that room - especially if they were children or elderly.
The holiday rep was fantastic and moved us to another hotel the following day - Brisas Del Carribe - which was great. No doubt though, that the episode at the Club Amigo - a misnomer if ever there was one - spoilt our holiday and we lost about 4 days. We have both travelled extensively around the world staying in a variety of different hotels, hostals and guest houses but have never experienced anything like this before.
We enjoyed the music & dancing everywhere you go and Havana but the constant asking for money by .....well just about every Cuban you meet, on the tours and in the bars or restaurants out of the hotel, got a bit tiresome in the end. The staff at the Brisas Del Caribe were great though and didn't expect tips all the time.
We probably won't go to Cuba again.

Arrived at 12:30 am April 18, 2008. The room they put us in was so far away from the main hotel we thought we were going to a dungen. The toilet didn't work we could not get moved until the next day. we were there for 15 day and the first 5 day we had to be moved to another room 4 times. We had problems with water pressure in one room, and again the toilet didn't work in another, we had floods in the bathroom for two days and front desk wouldn't send anyone to clean up the mess so I put towels down. The room attendant was very helpful she got maintenance to come and find out what the problem was.

The staff that worked the front desk for the 15 days that we were there needed some serious customer service training, they were not helpful at all, you could stand at the front desk waiting for them to give you some assistance and it was like you were invisiable. When they did notice you and you asked your questions they never seemed to know the answer to the question. The worst front desk staff I have ever come across, the Public Relations staff were no better, they would not even upgrade us for all the inconviences they put us through, all they offered was a lobster dinner what good is that if you have allergies to seafood. The Transat Holiday Rep was of no use at all, we asked to be moved to another hotel and he told us that they had a partnership with a resort down the beach but it would cost us $1, 025.00 to move there.

The food was pretty much the same each day, the fruit was good and the tomatoes were the best I have ever tasted other than that the food was just ok. Some of the buffet staff was excellent and others acted like we owed them something they didn't even want to clean the table off for you so that you could sit down and eat they were like that with a lot of people.

If you go to Varadero you should go to the Tropicana Caberet it was a wonderful show.

The resort was very large and if they closed sections down and took care of their plumbing problem maybe it could become a 4 star resort again oh yeh they have to get rid of the front desk staff or send them on intense training on how to treat their guest with some kind of respect.

Overall we had a good trip, the more they tried to make our trip a disaster the more we enjoyed ourself. We made our own fun and others enjoyed our humour also.

I would not reccomend this resort to anybody, it was not worth the money we spent. I will NEVER rest my head at Club Amigo in Varadero again it should be called Club No Amigo because there were not many amigo's there.
