Beau Rive is heaven, Mark is more than an hotelier he becomes a friend who is there to make your stay in his home the best he can. Dominica is beautiful and coming home each afternoon or evening after hiking, or just driving the mountain roads dodging pot holes and crazy drivers was just like coming home to a very elegant, calm, peaceful country home. The views from our room (3) were incredible the sounds of the sea, frogs, crickets, birds and the smell of the flowers made even staying in the room an experience.
Much has been said before and repetition is boring but nothing is left to chance, small things which make such a difference - crisp white sheets on a huge and so comfortable bed, sweet smelling fresh flowers in the room everyday, natural soaps in the bathroom, fresh coffee and a cafetiere in the room, the design of the rooms so that windows and doors are open to the breeze but not to the insects (not that there are any), home made yoghurt, jam and breads for breakfast and different freshly squeezed juices every morning, any type of tea you wanted, a library with comfy chairs and couches for those lazy days, a hammock to lay in to listen to the sounds and take in the beautiful smells, quiet but helpful staff, evening meals to die for no fuss with menus just exceptional food every night (with home made ice cream try the coffee and coconut), information freely given about places to go and guides to use, but most of all Mark who is one of the gentlest of gentlemen with his lovely voice and kind ways his piano playing, his constant concern that he needs to do more for you and his love of Dominica which is contagious. I know some will think this is all too much but believe me this is as good as it gets, if the big hotels could capture this feeling of staying in your best friends beautiful home they would be laughing and all for $160 a night. Go if you can, if you love peace, quiet, elegance, great rum punches for $2, good food, great company, nature and dogs (Millie, Florence and Basil the residents). If you are really lucky as we were you may meet Josie, Mark's wonderful mother who entertains some nights on the piano but has so many stories to tell.
Dominica is not for everyone, night life is what you make it, the roads are not for the faint hearted but not as bad as I had expected, it is totally unspoilt by tourism where the rain forest is still mainly intact, so take good walking shoes, snorkels, and an open mind and you will not want to leave.
