“Clean and friendly”

We had a lovely room with a balcony that overlooked the San Franciscan ruins. Very clean and comfortable. The staff was very friendly, but weirdly would not suggest a "regular" place to eat...only the ridiculously overpriced tourist spots. We tried in several ways, like "where doYOU like to eat?" or "we want to eat somewhere cheap and authentic, where local people like to eat" but still only got recommendations for italian restaurants and tapas restaurants that quite frankly charge more than I would pay in the US. We perceived this as a potential directive to only suggest the very "best" and most safely touristy places.

The daily breakfast was a bit of a disappointment, with only fruit, bread and coffee. We were able to order eggs, but had to pay extra. No beans or rice, but we were told that the restaurant had recently been bought and would reopen under new management at a later date.

Overall, this location was very central and the staff kind. I would stay there again, and recommend to friends.

    • Disliked — mediocre "Included" breakfast. No insider recommendations from front desk staff.
    • Tips/Secrets: — Locals taqueria around the corner is great place to people watch and grab a cheap sandwhich.

As a person living in the DR for nearly thee years, I have had a lot of experiences in hotels of all shapes and sizes, but have never been angered more than my recent stay in this hotel.
After paying cash, 78US, for my room for the night, and allowing a copy of my passport to be made, I went out to pick up my fiance of three years. After dinner we returned to the hotel, where we were informed that in order for her to enter my pricey room, a copy of her cedula would be neccesary, along with an additionalo ten dollars. Having no where else to go, i paid. But how insulting to my wallet and my Dominican better half.
In the morning they returned her cedula, and as I checked out was told that they would keep the copy of my passport for their archives. Only after some very tough talk was this copy returned to me. What nerve. I will never, ever stay here again, and I would urge any other visitor to utilize another hotel in this area, either the Conde across for the church and park, or the Hotel Holdelphi.

“Great Place”

Hotel Europa

Tampa, FL

Actually called Antiguo Europa, this is not the one in Boca Chica, as the earlier post suggests (though there is a Europa Hotel in BC). This Europa was very quaint, very friendly staff and within walking distance (three blocks)of Conde Ave and the more popular tourist attractions. The hotel is not lavish, but I'd rate it as a 2.5 stars as rated in the US. Booked it through Hotelopia(--) and true to their word, the price they quoted included all taxes. $65 for a standard room with king bed, cable, a/c, running hot water, safe in every room ($10 deposit for key). The first room they gave me didn't have a balcony, but they took care of that and moved me at no charge. Free breakfast (continental) with bread, juice and fresh fruit). For you single guys, "guests" are allowed, provided they have ID. The hotel is within a mile of the coastline (no beaches in Santo Domingo), casinos are about two miles. Not a bad walk during the day. The downsides, the young kids and hustlers trying to get some of your hard earned money, by shining shoes or helping you in any way they can. A stern "no, gracias" is all it takes. Taxi from the airport is $36, entry fee to the country is $10. When leaving, contrary to material I read, there was no exit fee like Costa Rica. Taxi to the airport from the hotel was $30. Try to avoid taxi's at all cost. But if you do, negotiate and domn't pay more that 300 colones (under $10). Most of the staff spoke limited English.

Easy hotel to get in and out of. Large rooms, even the 1 bedrooms are big. We stayed in a huge 2 bedroom with balcony, AC. It was $45 USD, singles were $30. Breakfast is not bad. Internet is free when it works. You can bring "guests" in easly with ID. no problem at all. DO NOT stay in the north side of the building, all rooms there are above the Disco. South side is quiet. We were happy with the room/hotel.
