Well...I read about 100 reviews on this resort after i had already booked, and let me tell you...I was terrified.I thought i was going to find bloody sheets, moldy bathrooms, terrible food, a garbage filled beach....I found none of that. I have travelled to Hedonism II which was supposedly a 5 star super all inclusive, as well as Gran Ventana just last year, and I honestly didnt see i huge difference in service. Barcelo has the best price, considering we payed 3000 pp to go to Hedo and 2000 pp to go to Gran Ventana. We had requested a 2nd level room facing the pool with a King size bed, CHECK it was perfect. Our ac didnt work ( not a big deal) they moved us within 15 minutes to the room next door which had an even better view. I thought the room was spotless, yes the decor is a little outdated but nothing outrageous. I dont go to these 3rd world resorts to look at paint colors and bedspread designs. I never had a worry about cleanliness when i was crawling into bed at night.
The resort grounds were impecable, always someone cleaning picking up empty glasses, cigarette butts etc.
We had been warned to get up extra early at this resort if we wanted an umbrella so the first morning i got up at 5:30am to snatch one...Crazy, the rest of the week there were umbrellas to be had after 8am.The 2 pools were clean, the smaller pool was almost always empty great for just relaxing, the main pool was still spacious enough to float around without feeling like you were going to bump into anyone. I watch them clean it every evening and early am.Very dilligent workers.
The beach was perfect we actually ended up spending most of our time there because it had a breeze and believe me with the heat in the high 30's every day, a breeze was much needed. No problem getting drinks or food, lineups were minimal i think the longest lineup i was in had 4 people in front of me. No different than any fast food restuarant here in Nova Scotia.
Entertainment staff was very energetic, they must hook up to redbull IV's at night!! The evening shows were nice, its not Vegas so dont expect that, Just expect alot of clapping, high energy, music, and good laughs, What more do you need??
The Beach vendors were entertaining as well, "no gracias" worked fine for us, i found most of them enjoyed just talking almost as much as selling, theres no need to be rude to these people they are so glad to talk about the "real" dominican. Very friendly people.
We took the catamaran cruise to sousua for snorkelling, only payed 60us pp and had a wonderful day, i was SUPER seasick but it was particularly rough that day, I didnt let it ruin my time.
Also took a horse and buggy ride through the "backroads" to a school, a local home, and on a general tour. 30us and we were gone for 4 hours, I did the outback safari last year, this honestly was just a more compact version and only 30bucks, We took a ton of stuff to give to the school, we went in the school for about 1/2 hour talked with teachers and children. Went to local home and tried Mamajuana ----wow thats crazy stuff---try it.
All in all im starting to ramble on, i would love to answer any of your questions, i've been to the Playa Dorada complex 2 years in a row 2 diferent hotels and will be headed back again next year.Everything is within walking distance and its a gated community, very safe
nice smaller size resorts, directly on the beach, About a 3 minute walk from our hotel room to the water.See im starting to ramble again... room 10207 great pool and stage view if your too tired to go to the show at night, watch it in your pj's from the balcony of your room...we did!!
Hope this helps you all :)
