Wife and I stayed here from 13th - 27th May, we booked through Thomas Cook, travelling from Glasgow.
The temperature on arrival was extremely hot & humid, transfer was quick and efficient and rep did her job. We had read previous reviews on this site and had came to the conclusion that the "beatta block" had very bad reviews due to the rooms being dated, damp smelling and backing onto a club opened till 4am - all of these stories were confirmed by guests we'd spoken to whom stayed there.
We had specifically requested the "Saona block" which was fully renovated last year - it was fresh, clean & modern with a brand new fully tiled bathroom, with good water pressure (this is a problem with the other blocks) - I would strongly recommend you request this block 2 weeks in advance of travelling (001-809-320-2111 from UK).
the Al acarte resteraunts are good the Octopus and Italian anyway, the mexican was bland to say the least, but the buffet was good, breakfast fairly standard, although they have an eggs station where they freshly cook any kind of eggs you require ie omlettes - simply pick your ingredients and they do the rest. Lunch and dinner offered a choice of 8-10 main carribbean and european dishes, chicken, pork, beef, fish as well as various pasta's veg/salads and chips, potatoes, cold meats, rices and loads of fresh fruit etc - anyone who says they could'nt find something they liked frankly is too fussy and should have stayed at home instead of going on holiday to moan.
The hotel is spotlessly clean the cleaners are there all the time and the rooms are freshly made up every day, leave a dollar or two each morning and they'll make you swans out of your towels and scatter flower petals over your bed etc - it makes a difference to the maids.
Now the bad stuff - I had an upset tummy a few times and it is not down to the water, food but the poor quality cheap local alcohol a brand called "Classic" is used in most hotels for most spirits except the local rum - Brugal which is very good, if like many others you drink reasonable amounts of the spirits and cocktails this will result in upset tummys. The red wine and beer is ok.
The main downside of the whole resort is stuff to do - there is nothing in the whole resort except hotels and a few bars and resteraunts - its ok if you want to stay in the hotel and sunbathe or swin in the pools or beach - we didnt well not for 2 weeks.
DO NOT book excursions through the reps in the hotel -the plaza is a 10 min walk away and can be booked for half the price of Thomas Cook, to ride in exactly the same coaches, boats to the same places at the same time with the same insurance - everthing exactly the same except half price - a real sore point that against Thomas Cook.
Did monster truck ride - ok - saw how real rural Dominicans live and coffee and cocoa plantations, but that was it. Did top view cable car which was good but the rest of the stops made were poor to be honest.
Paradise island was excellent, snorkelled over the coral reefs and stopped in some breath taking places.
The "flea market" is supposedly a must but is incredibly tedious - you are constanly harrassed by the sellers, totally off putting they are nothing short of pests, they'll stand in your way and try and escort you into thier shop.
Overall unless the resort invests heavily in some entertainment then I and almost all the other people I met on holiday there will not return again and that is nothing against the hotel - simply the resort
