My girlfriend and I have just returned from 14 nights in the resort of Puerto Plata, we stayed at the resort Playa Doradas and in the hotel Blue Bay Villas. the whole experience was fantastic, however it wasn't everything we expected.
HOTEL - BLUE BAY VILLAS & SPA
The hotel was beautiful, it was imaculately clean and all the staff were so friendly and helpful. the animation team were constantly working hard to keep you entertained and put on some magnificent shows on the evening. this is an adults only hotel so there were no children playing about during the day (well except the animation team, they were big kids themselves). the hotel is right on the beach and thats where you could find the snack bar as well. the food was constantly changed to try and cater for everyone, however we did get bored after a while and their didn't seem to be an English night, but this wasn't a problem either as you get given vouchers to visit the on site al la carte restauants so when we didn't fancy the evenings meal we booked in them and they were amazing. the oriental fusion for us was by far the best and couldn't find a single fault other than we didn't quite care for their house wine. in total this hotel exceeded our expectations..... it just wasn't for us, we did enjoy it and thank the staff so much but not been sporty people we didn't fancy joining in the games and there wasn't a whole lot else to do, next time we go we'll probably shop about a bit, but anyone wanting a nice relaxing holiday to de-stress and unwind i'd certainly recommend this hotel.
THE RESORT
All the hotels are in little resorts that are in their own enclosure, to enter the resorts you pass through big gate ways manned by armed guards, this can sound quite off putting but it does make you feel a bit safer. in the resorts themselves there isn't much to do, its mainly all hotels, in the resort of Playa Doradas where we were we had a shopping complex with a pizza hut, the shops inside were good a lot of it sold the same sort of products and you could also change money down there as well, its all resonably priced and the shop keepers are great to banter with and have a laugh, you do get pestered by them especially the one's selling excursions but a simple no thank you and carry on walking and they leave you alone. there's a small bar tucked away in the back of the complex called 'Phils Bar' its an english guy and its brilliant, its only small no pool table or anything but if your bored of the hotel entertainment or want to watch football or just have english company, he's got the tele on with the footy playing and music channels for you to flick through he's got playing cards and poker chips and the beers cheap and nice too. pay him a visit! Puerto Plata itself has two main areas, rich areas and poor areas, they say you can venture out of your complex and go exploring (we like to do this normally) however been on the coaches and seeing the areas don't instill that much confidence, and certainly DO NOT DRIVE!!!! its not that the roads are bad or anything but its the drivers they just go where they want, how fast they want and basically do what they want, the problem is if your driving and your involved in an accident its your fault, the other driver may have gone through a red light but its still your fault... the reps will explain better but basically your the visitor, you shouldn't be driving there, if you wasn't driving the accident wouldn't have happen, its your fault!
EXCURSIONS
When you get your list of excursion your tour company will advise you to book through them and only them for saftey reasson's more than anything. thats what we did however their are a few people on the beach near the complexes that offer a greater variety for a little bit cheaper and we know of a few couples who went with them and said it was ok, this is a choice for you, we stayed with the one's the rep offered us and if we fancied something different we asked if it was available as some tour operators offered different excursion that varied slightly.
Ocean World! MUST MUST MUST! not too badley priced and a really good day out, we swam with dolphins and that was amazing certainly one of our holiday highlights we also got to add on extra activities too e.g i did the sea lion encounter and cannot begin to tell you how fantastic it was, you can also feed the sharks, snorkell with sting rays and for those that don't want to swim with dolphins there's always the dolphin encounter. once your activity is over there is still plenty to do, they have varies shows through the day that are worth watching, the tropical gardens that you can walk through and see the parrots and love birds, snorkell in a large pool filled with amazing fish and also there is a pool that you can swim in right next to a tiger enclosure and the only thing seperating you is a sheet of glass, you get to feed the tiger too but we missed that bit.
the Outback Safari, another big must, a full day out and you really do get to see how the locals live, you visit a local house and school, visit a coffee farm and get to taste fresh coco and coffee. they take you on a small river safari, you get to swim in a fresh water river (if your not a strong swimmer i'd advise paddeling as the current is really strong) also after dinner they take you to a beach to do some boogie boarding, we didn't realise how much fun it was and the waves were huge (My girlfrind's advise and probably all the other females on that trip too is to either wear and extreamly tight fitting bikini or a full costume, you might end up revealing more than you intended) the tour guides really make the day great though, we had a guy called jessie, wuldn't shut up talking but was absolutley fantastic, mental, but fantastic. ask him any question about the locals or the area and he'll tell you. Another good thing about that day, they keep you topped up with rum and coke, rum and sprite or beer all day long FANTASTIC! some other excursions we did were still really good (but they were the highlights), these were a day on a catamaran, a really good day out if your not sea sick and enjoy snorkelling, when we were out we had dolphins swimming next to the boat. we also did a trip called northern highlights, that was another full day and was a good day, a brilliant way to see the area, plus you visit one of the nice beaches of the area, there's a market there too where you can get some good bargins but you must haggle! the locals love to haggle so brush up on your haggling skills, again they will pester you the full lengh of the market - harmless but be strong no means no lol! (if anyone needs the loo whilst your there, walk to nearly the very end of the market. there free there but the ones near where the bus drops you off cost money)
IN SUMMARY we did have a fantastic time and would recommend this to anyone, the weather was good (an occasional thunderstorm - but there just as good to be out in or watch) the people are nice enough and the whole time is just one long relaxing party, it is so laid back the country is almost lying down, there's a lot of culture to take in, a lot of things to see but its worth the visit. would we go back again? yes! just maybe we'd find a hotel with a bit more to do and maybe not for as long as once we'd done our excursions we were starting to get bored. hopefully this has been helpful to you, enjoy your stay.
p.s if you stay at the blue bay - the water's not that deep so don't try diving in!
