It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. That old acronym can be thrown right out of the picture window upon arriving at the luxurious Barcelo Punta Cana resort in the Dominican Republic. Picture perfect, it is bound to leave you speechless. Its tropical beauty seems to welcome you like an old friend, and your relaxing Caribbean experience begins immediately upon arrival. From the moment your tour bus turns on to the resorts considerable property, one’s senses are overcome with excitement and much sought after relaxation all at once. You’ll find yourself reaching for the digital camera, before even reaching the lobby. But, there will be plenty of time for that later.

Just 30 minutes from the airport, this underrated 4-star property has it all. From the moment you arrive, you feel more than welcome. The speedy check-in process ensures that you will get your luggage delivered within minutes to your ultra clean, well-appointed, air conditioned and modern room, enabling you to quickly unpack and head d off to check out the rest of the property. After having undergone considerable renovations in the past year or so, the resort is nothing short of spectacular, with upgraded rooms, an additional restaurant, plus an impressive 3rd pool area designed with the kids in mind.

The tropical destination sounds as though it is a world away, but in fact it is only about a four or five hour plane ride that jets you a world away from the frozen surroundings of Canada, and deposits you in paradise.

Another convenience is finding yourself within walking distance to the next-door market, where all of your souvenir shopping can be done. Be sure to bring American money with you. With the Canadian dollar hovering close to the American in value, doing the math is as easy as walking there. A 15-minute stroll along the scenic entry road will take you to the craft market, with shops run by local artisans, proudly displaying their wares. You will find all the souvenirs you need -- rum, cigars, wooden artwork, amber jewelry, Larimar (a local stone), and bright colorful paintings, which enable you to bring back more than just wonderful memories.

Parched from shopping? No problemo, the solution is right in front of you, when you get back. Wade up to the pool bar, where a refreshing Mudslide—or whatever whets your whistle-- awaits. The eager bartenders will have you slurping on a concoction of their making within moments, and those are the moments you will take home with you, along with your souvenirs. Those who have worked up an appetite can head off to the centrally located buffet; Alcazar Restaurant for their fill of whatever the mood calls for. Come sundown, the a la carte’s include the Paris Restaurant, Tokio Restaurant, Roma Restaurant, and the Marlin Restaurant, and Conuco Restaurant, in addition to the newly constructed El Mirador Restaurant.

Tennis anyone?

Jetting away from the winter climate, means participating in non winter activities, and the Barcelo Punta Cana resort does not disappoint! You’ll find yourself being able to partake in such fun activities as trying your skills on the trapeze-complete with instructors and a safety net, or rock climbing right on the property, facing the lapping ocean. Travelers young and experienced can also check out such amenities as the Jacuzzi’s, huge impressive theatre, hurricane disco, casino, in addition to the many on-site stores. Those wishing to do so, can visit the Internet café, to check their e-mail, or even perhaps the weather network, to check on that at-home temperature! From the world class Spa, to the gym, games room, mini club, tennis, basketball, and even ice skating, boredom is certainly not on this all-inclusive menu! Highly recommended is Sandy’s coffee, found off of the main lobby, where any type of coffee is available. Try an afternoon espresso, for a jolt of energy you’ll need to make those days as long as possible!

Hands on approach

Barcelo Punta Cana Resort Manager Sandy Pfeil, employs a hands-on approach to running this resplendent home away from home. Always smiling, and easily approachable, she is often seen conversing with guests anywhere from the front entrance to poolside. Her warm smile welcomes you to this paradise that does not know of snow, or shoveling, though the white sands may fool you momentarily. She will make you feel like a welcomed guest in her home. Escaping the clutches of Old-Man Winter never felt so good!

When the sun dips into the ocean as if for its nighttime swim, the resort is alive with holidayers enjoying the resort atmosphere. After dinner, the impressive local talent will make you forget what time – and for that matter what day -- it is. This cycle is repeated starting early the next morning, with made-to-order omelet’s, and side dishes of delicacies far too numerous to mention. Making your stay even more enjoyable are the people, who rank among the friendliest and most accommodating in the world.

Gazing up at the clear night sky, the stars seem to wink ‘goodnight’. Rest assured, 5 of those stars can be used to describe this Oceanside pearl, the Barcelo Punta Cana. Having been there more than a couple of times, we can assure you that everything your vacation menu has on it, will be met. Everything, that is-except disappointment.

Palm trees dot the beach, which is almost too long to walk. It is like strolling through a postcard, complete with windsurfers, catamarans, scuba divers and fellow sun seekers with smiles on their faces that are almost as wide as the beach itself. White washed buildings blanketed by red-tiled roofs exude Spanish charm at this resort on Playa Arena Gorda, offering 792 elegantly-appointed guestrooms.

You’ll find yourself asking; How many February mornings has that alarm clock gone off, and you wished you were somewhere about 30 or 40 degrees warmer? Don’t wait any longer. Experience the vacation you’ve always dreamed of.

“vacation at the Barcelo Bavero Beach and Resort.”

Barcelo Bavaro Beach

Husband and I just returned from a 10 day trip to Punta Cana. Overall experience very pleasant if you like extremely hot and humid weather. The Barcelo Bavaro Beach Resort complex has 5 different hotels. We stayed at the Barcelo Casino. We found the casino to not be very popular and usually empty. This hotel and the Barcelo Golf were the only 2 without direct access to the beach. Although most everything is in easy walking distance including the beach, buffets and resturants. The Bavero Palace is the only one tucked away from the center of everything but with the tram that runs from 8am until 4am getting anywhere's is no problem. There is a little flea market right next to the Palace that I don't think many people are aware of. When shopping there the key is BARTER...barter...BARTER. You can get good deals just haggle and barter.

“Nice Beach-Service Could Improve”

Barcelo Bavaro Beach

This is a beautiful resort and the food is above average for an all inclusive. Our vacation, however, did have some problems. As many other reviewers have said, our reservation was mixed up. Despite calling and verifying the day before we arrived, when we arrived we were told that we were not booked at the Barcelo Bavaro Beach but at another hotel up the road. It was a twenty minute and $22 taxi ride away. That didn't cut it for us since, besides verifying it before we left home, we had all of our excursions set up to pick up at this hotel. Anyway, we ended up getting a room but the front desk was not sympathetic and pretended not to speak english.

Another day, I needed assistance in calling one of our tours. Needless to say, the front desk did not help and would not make the call for me. I ended up doing it myself and - luckily - the tour operator had someone that spoke english who answered the phone.

I would stay here again but, keep in mind that the service is not as friendly as others I have seen. You should speak Spanish to go here. Many of the wokers did not speak english and I think we would have gotten better service if we spoke their language. I think they avoided talking to us at all.

The rooms are clean. They have tile floor and have that carribean smell that most hotels have in the humid carribean.

The food was great and the beaches were beautiful.

I caution you, though, to schedule your tours in advance as we found it almost impossible to get a tour operator even though they were supposed to be stationed at the hotel. Also, note that the Dominican Republic seems to operate on its own time table. Our taxi - scheduled for 11:00 - showed up at 12:00. Our tour for 6:30 a.m. showed up after 7:00 and our bus to the local zoo for 2:00 showed up at 2:45. As long as you know this going in, it won't stress you out.

“Great Resort complex”

Barcelo Bavaro Beach

The BEACH / CARIBE resorts are Great !!! they are a solid 4 star and the beach is wonderful. The food is good, but as far as the a la carte restaurants are concerned the only one we enjoyed was the steak house, so we went 3 times. We ordered the meat sampler platter for 2 and shared it.

Rolling Black outs - Be aware that it is farely comon for there to be power outages while you are there, there is not enough energy to support the whole island so they share power and occasionally at night the power will go off. The resort is very well exuiped and versed in dealing with this though and the pull out back up ambiance right away. The only inconvenience is the disco is not open. We used this oportunity to share a romantic candle lit dinner and get to know some of our neighbours in the resort.

Excursions - We did the day trip to Saona which is an un inhabited island , getting there was half the fun, a great excursion all round.

“major consruction problems - noise/dust everywhere”

Barcelo Bavaro Beach

3 of 5 stars
Indianapolis, Indiana
May 6, 2008

I stayed at this hotel/resort for 2 weeks and found it to be average in all aspects. It should be noted that the Barcelo Beach Resort is currently rebuilding 4 of the 5 buildings. Although they have a large fence around the construction site to reduce dust/dirt, this does not reduce the noise of the construction project. The construction project will not be completed until December 2008.
The noise of the jack hammers breaking concreate goes on from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day, 7 days a week. The construction firm is under a strict deadline. Therefore there are very few people at this location due to the fact that buiklding 5 only has 200 rooms. It would be much better to stay at the Barcelo Bavaro Casino or Golf Resort which is located 1 block away within the same compound. Although many people were complaining about the noise, there was nothing that the barcelo staff could do as often the other hotels (Casino, Golf, Caribe, Palace) were full.
Also, it sould be noted that in June & July 2008 there will be several thousand Cuban-American residents from Flordia who get a special price and the resort is completely CRAZY with everyone drunk due to all-inclusive package and free booze.
This is not a good time to go if you are looking for rest and relaxation. It is GREAT time to go if you like to drink from 10 a.m. until 5 a.m. with crazy party people. Also, take your own TUMS, Roid Aids, sun screen, sun lotion, etc. Everything is 4x more expensive than in the USA due to resort prices.
