My husband and I have actually stayed at Barcelo Bavaro Beach Resort in Punta Cana three times. The first time we stayed at the Golf Hotel, the second time at the Caribe and the third time at the Palace (we got married there June 28, 2008). I feel compelled to write because of all the horrible reviews other people have posted. I have a question to ask everyone. What language do you expect people who live and work in a Spanish speaking country to speak? Bring a Spanish-English dictionary if you're that concerned about it. For people who keep mentioning the "locals" at the resort I have two comments to that. The first is why shouldn't people who live in the Dominican be able to visit a resort in the Dominican. Have you ever gone to a hotel on or near the beach in your country? How dare you :). The second comment is that I would question the local status given to people. Just because someone has a darker skin tone and can speak Spanish does not automatically make that person Dominican. During the months of June and July this particular hotel complex has good deals for Cuban Americans. Might these mean more people who can speak both Spanish and English? Probably but who cares? People have a right to go on vacation whenever and wherever they feel like it. Now on to the food...both my husband and I are vegetarian and all three times we have been there have had more than plenty to eat. Does the buffet serve similar food each day? Of course. Perhaps that has a little something to do with feeding hundreds and hundreds of people each day.
Hotel specifics: The Golf hotel is lower in price but not necessarily lower in quality...it's just that the hotel is a couple minute walk to the beach. The buffet for the Golf always has excellent soups as does the Casino Buffet. The golf is ideal for people traveling with more than two. You can get double rooms with four beds in them.
The Caribe hotel is nice and we had no problems staying there.
All the rooms in every hotel are "musty". What do you expect with above 80 degree temperatures next to an ocean? Crank the A/C and the mustiness will vanish.
The Palace hotel is very nice but only people with Palace bracelets can consume food or drink on the Palace premises. This turned out to be nice for my husband and I when we wanted some alone time post nuptials. Most of our guests were at the Caribe.
The Beach hotel is under construction. We had 33 guests at our wedding and only 6 stayed at the Palace. Everyone else was at the Caribe and 5 people were at the Golf. Absolutely no one said anything about construction noise or dirt.
The staff: Very friendly and nice which is surprising considering most of them work 12-16 a day for 2-3 weeks straight only to get 3-5 days off and only earn between $200-$250 a month. With that in mind maybe the next time a staff person doesn't smile or say hola when you walk by (although most do) keep in mind their work schedule and pay...not to mention the fact that they are human.
Entertainment: We love the entertainment at the Caribe and was actually a huge factor in us deciding to get married there. The entertainment staff works all day to keep guests happy, amused and active. The night time shows can be a riot and we often leave with huge smiles on our faces.
I am going to post about the wedding under the Barcelo Bavaro Palace section but it was just absolutely amazing!
