We stayed at Maca Bana in the Paw Paw Villa March 7-14. When you walk into the villa, you immediately notice the view…amazing. I think each villa offers it own uniqueness and beautiful view. At Paw Paw you do feel very secluded. The accommodations were beautiful and the villa was well equipped and wonderfully appointed. Maca Bana provides a nice selection of groceries to get your stay started. Provided for us was, milk, orange juice, butter, cheese, lunchmeat, bread, water, jam, eggs, yogurt, and a large fruit selection. While it is a self-catering villa, they provide everything you need such as shampoo, hairdryer, handmade soap, paper-towels, and dish soap. The villa was also equipped with radio/CD player, satellite TV, and beach towels. Phone calls to the U.S. were also reasonable at 0.55 cents/min.
Michaela the General Manager, who runs the villas, is onsite Monday through Friday during the day, but otherwise if you have problems you need only to call her cell phone. We made our own tour and dinner reservations. Michaela arranged our car rental through Lorry’s car rental. We got a 2-door jeep for $330 for the week. The Aquarium restaurant was some of the best food we had during our stay. Their lobster was the best I had in Grenada. Prices were comparable to the other restaurants we tried. We ate at the Aquarium twice for dinner and once for lunch. To be honest our 1st dinner and the lunch we had horrible service, we felt ignored. I asked for a soda 3 times and never got one. My husband could not get a second beer because no one ever came back to our table. We had to ask for the check just to get out of there. Although we were impressed with the food, we actually cancelled one of our dinners with them because of the service.
The walk down to the beach is the main drawback in our opinion. The hill down to the beach is fairly steep, not too bad going down, but it is a long way up…needless to say, make sure you do not leave anything behind in your villa. We packed a travel cooler and took it down to the beach each day. Beach chairs our provided through the Aquarium restaurant (also owned by Maca Bana). Beach chairs are available at 10:00am. Magazine beach is beautiful with some fun waves. The beach did get busy on the weekend and if a couple cruise ships were in port. One day 4 ships were in and luckily we got to the beach before the cruise ship passengers did or we would not have has chairs that day.
They have a lovely pool with a great view. Surprisingly the pool was fairly cold for being in the sun all day, but as long as the sun was out we enjoyed it. We tried to take an evening swim, but it was too cold for us. So off to our hot tub we went. I was very surprised at how clean they keep the hot tubs. We have a hot tub ourselves and have been places were they are often over-looked. The minute the hot tub started looking cloudy, the next day is was crystal clear. The only problem I had was the chemicals they used in the hot tub made our skin itch, but a good shower afterwards seemed to stop it. The grounds are beautiful with the garden and small ponds. The turtle pond is fun to watch.
All in all we had a lovely time. It was one of the nicest self-catering places we have ever stayed in. Their attention to detail is wonderful. It is also nice that you can charge your meals and drinks at the Aquarium restaurant to your room. The car rental could also be charged to our room. I would recommend this place to others. I would not recommend it to families with children, or at least young children, because of the trek to the beach. I would also recommend getting a rental car, because it is easy to get around, especially to travel the main road from Maca Bana to Grand Anse.
