Me and my sister stayed at the Fishermans Point this summer. We had been to Jamaica before, and though we had never stayed at this particular hotel, we knew of it and thought we knew what to expect.
The one-bedroom had only one air conditioner in the bedroom and the rest of the room was burning hot. It was cooler outside than it was in our hotel room. But the room was spacious and you get what you pay for, so we didn't complain.
Two days into our stay our air conditioner broke and began to drip all over the bed. Air conditioning is something so basic in the hot Jamaican summer, so we went to the front desk to let him know about the problem. The night manager, Chance, was the only person there, and he after ten minutes of him insisting that I was wrong and the air conditioning was working fine, he promised to come up and have a look, and said that he would call someone to fix it in the morning if it really was broken.
This was totally fine, but I told him that I expected the hotel to find us another place to sleep for the night, as the air in the hotel room was so stuffy by this time, that it was hard to breathe. Chance agreed to this, but when he came up to our room and realized that the air conditioner was indeed broken, he said there was no other place for us to stay.
I was extremely upset by this as it seemed to me that Chance was just trying to take advantage of two girls traveling alone, and being difficult instead of helpful. And at my insistence, miraculously there was another room available for us to spend the night in.
The next day someone came to fix our air conditioner but this was only the beginning of the trouble we had at Fisherman’s Point. After this, all of our guests were stopped at the gate and refused entry and turned away. For those friends that remained insistent that they be allowed up, me or my sister had to go down and sign them in as visitors as they would not accept a verbal agreement to let visitors in. Even more ridiculous, any visitors that remained on the hotel premises after 11 o’clock had to pay a $10 fee.
The two of us travel quite a bit, and we have been to Jamaica before. The hotel we stayed at before, Rooms on the Beach, was far, far superior to Fishermans Point for a similar price. The management at Fishermans Point was rude and childish, and only seemed to want to make trouble for us. As a customer I believe that if a room is advertised to have a working air conditioner than it should, and if it doesn’t the management should go out of their way to fix the problem, not make it more difficult for the customer.
I love Jamaica, and I love Oche- the locals are friendly and the food is great and I will definitely go back, but I will NEVER stay at Fisherman’s Point.
