The Caves

My husband and I stayed at the Caves in May of 2008. Ground transfers from Montego Bay Airport to the resort and back were perfect. The trip takes about 1.5 hours. The drivers will stop wherever you want to eat or shop. I arranged the transfers via email to the resort. The cost is $75 per couple per way and is added to your room bill.

When booking our stay, I requested the Sea Turtle bungalow. However, the Caves will not guarentee a specific room, only the type of room (downstairs or upstairs). One Drop and Two Birds are stand alone bungalows and can be guarenteed at booking. The downstairs bungalows and the 2 stand alones have air conditioning which is a wonderful thing in the summer. We had humid weather so it was nice sleeping in a cool room. Also some guests complained of mosquitos but we didn't get one bite mostly because we could close our shutters at night with the a/c.

At check-in, we were told that the Sea Turtle was given to other guests and we got the Blue Dolphin. Our room was very cute with a furnished front porch, king sized bed, stocked mini-bar (vodka, whiskey, rum, beer, pepsi, juices, oreos, crackers, coffee), ceiling fan, CD players with great selections, bath with rain shower and a room safe. The Blue Dolphin is set back from the main path which gives it a wonderful sense of privacy. There is an outdoor shower close by to rinse the sea water off before entering your room. The only down side to our room was that it was not very bright.

Small wonderful touches are everywhere, stain glass in our bathroom walls, hand painted murals, beautiful foliage, private spots for sunning. Besides the scenery, the best thing about the Caves is the staff. The people are just wonderful. They introduce themselves, shake your hand and genuinely seemed interested in talking with you. By Day 2, they all know your name. Paul, the life-guard- cliff-diver- kayak-snorkle-guide is such a sweet guy. He will take you for a kayak trip or snorkle into the caves. We saw large string rays, eels, puffer fish, barcuda, needle fish, just to name a few. Paul does not work on Fridays or Saturdays so be sure to plan your water adventures in advance.

Dinner in a cave can be reserved upon your arrival. It was a unique experience but nothing too incredible. It was fun but definitely not the highlight of the trip. That also goes for the private hot tub (by reservations only). There is a hottub/shower and bench area built into a cave with a window overlooking the sea. There were robes, flowers and champagne for us. We were disappointed that the water was only luke warm.

The food was incredibly fresh. Breakfast begins with a fruit plate of at least 8 different kinds of fruit. Fresh-squeezed juices were always available. Jamiacan Blue Mountain Coffee put Starbucks to shame! If you love dark, rich coffee, you're going to love BMC. There was always a choice of 2 entrees for lunch and for dinner. Both come with lots of veggies. I was looking forward to the desserts but was dissapointed. They do however have a large supply of Haagen-Daz ice cream in a variety of flavors!! If you happen to get the munchies between meals, there are snacks (brownies, banana cake, pringles, nuts) located at the 2 bars in addition to an unlimited supply of drinks.

My husband and I had massages with Patrick (the spa manager) and Claire. They are both wonderful and give can give excellent deep tissue massage when requested.

I was able to get a sneak-peak into 3 other rooms. The Sea Turtle, Butterfly and One Drop. The Sea Turtle and The Butterfly are at the southern end of the property next to the dinner area. The Butterfly is ontop of the SeaTurtle. Both have king sized beds and spacious, bright rooms (larger than Blue Dolphin). Although located on the end of the property, the Sea Turtle in on the main path. So if your shutters are open then anyone walking by can easily see into your room. The Butterfly is probably the ultimate in privacy being an upstairs bungalow. However, it does not have a/c. The Butterfly is beautiful inside with a peaked ceiling and orange walls. One Drop is a bit smaller room with a queen sized bed and outdoor shower. The room is very cute with peaked ceilings and a comfy window seat.

My husband and I were completely thrilled with The Caves. We had very high expectations and they were amazingly exceeded.

We just returned from possibly the most relaxing four-day vacation of our lives. Let us tell you that everything everyone has written on TripAdvisor about Caves is true.

Every single aspect, from the courteous timely pick up at the Montego Bay airport, to the initial chilled Cliffhanger (yummy), to our gorgeous airconditioned room "Two Birds", to the indescribably beautiful, spectacular setting of the resort among the azure-blue waters, to the Caves themselves that make swimming through them a truly memorable experience, to the best massages that I have had in my life (thanks Patrick), to the friendly employees (special shout out to Julene), to the romantic setting of the candle-light dinners, the steaming hot tub, the private Jacuzzi, to the gourmet dinners of grilled lobster, steak, tuna, etc... Every single thing was spectacular.

The only bad part about the whole experience was that we had to leave. We cannot wait to go back and see all our Jamaican friends again.

We spent 5 nights at The Caves and enjoyed everything about it. The grounds and facilities are so beautiful and the location is really special. We stayed in SunDancer and highly recommend it. It's a 2-bedroom hut, though we only used the upstairs bedroom. SunDancer has a fantastic location right near the cliff, two large decks (up and down) and a great outdoor shower. The staff at The Caves is very attentive and friendly, as many other reviews have mentioned. We also loved the food and ordered the combo for most meals so we could try everything. We requested lobster for our night of cave dining and it was delicious (also had lobster at the manager's dinner). We snorkled, went for a bike ride, went kayaking, but mostly just lazed around on a floatie, a lounge chair or a hammock.

Well, there is not much to add to all the glowing reviews, but believe me when I say that they are all too true! The pictures on this site are beautiful, but when I saw it in real life - they don't do it justice at all. You have to see this place to believe it. Our room was wonderful, no A/C all week in 85 degree weather was actually ok! You get a nice fan and ceiling fan and it really cools down at night! OUr view was like something out of a movie. We stayed in Bird's Nest, which is a 2nd floor unit. Loved it! When trying to figure out the best thing about this place, it is so hard to choose - staff (so friendly, accommodating, real, etc...), food (one word - amazing - think 2 HUGE lobsters, 8 oz filet, soup, salad, appetizer, dessert, constantly pouring wine - all in one meal and under the stars on the roof top deck!), the views (there is not one bad spot on this whole resort!), water (amazingly blue, warm and calm), or the cave/cliff jumping ( I did ALL the jumps - try it, it is a thrill!)....We are already planning to go back for our one year anniversary and I cannot wait. Jamaica is so full of color, culture, music, and beauty.....perfect honeymoon location. We spent an evening in Stardust with another couple we met at the Caves (hi Lorin and Dawn!) - and if you can request, this place is awesome - you have so much privacy and a cliff top deck! Try out ALL the food combos - go ahead, gain some weight while you are there!, try the cigar bar at night - even if it is just you and the bartender, it is still an amzing place, definitely do the cave dinner - it was so romantic. Other than that, read, swim, sleep, lay in the hammock and do NOTHING - it will be over too soon!

Can't wait to go back!!!

“Beyond Expectations”

The Caves

When you see only great reviews, you tend to worry if its true. In addition, the price is so high at the Caves that you tend to worry if its worth it.

We can genuinely say that although it was steep, we have no regrets at all. The pictures posted by others here do no justice to its actual beauty and the service and total atmosphere is hard to fathom until you actually experience.

As soon as you arrive (and you can get there before the 4pm check in time to get your money's worth for the first day) they prepare you a welcome cocktail and bring you a cool facial towel. The treatment stays that way the whole time.

There is no bad place to sit at the Caves. Whether near the pool overlooking the Sea or on a private ledge, the chairs are nice, the drinks are limitless, and the umbrella shades you from the sun.
Be sure you snorkel as much as you can. The fish are plentiful and not afraid of people. We saw spotted rays, and on the last day, a giant ray. Its amazing, and you can snorkel as much as you want. Its all included.

The food also exceeded our expectations, and we would consider ourselves to be food snobs to a degree. Everything was perfect with spices and tastes you cant get back home. The seafood was perfect, and ask for the combination of everything. We had tuna and lamb one night, and lobster tails and steak another.

The rooms are also incredible. We stayed in Macka Tree. It is an upstairs room with a huge window overlooking the Sea. Beautiful. The only negative is that this room is not air conditioned. There are overhead fans and a room fan, but its hot. I wouldnt go in the summer and had a little trouble sleeping. My wife had no problem. The room decorations and location were unreal though.

If we are lucky enough to be able to afford a special trip again in our lives, I would have a hard time imagining we wouldnt go back.

PS. The only other negative is the staff is not that responsive when you email. They will get to you eventually, but its not always fast. Better to pick up the phone. Also, they will not allow you to book cave dining in advance. You could get shut out. This doesnt seem fair either because you could reserve a room a year in advance and get nudged out by someone who happened to check in a day earlier. We got lucky and got to do it, but it doesnt seem like a fair policy. Either way though, the dining is romantic and great.
