My husband and I stayed at Sandals, Negril at the end of April for our honeymoon. When we booked our honeymoon a year ago, we were just looking for somewhere nice and something other than a cruise. Our travel agent had suggested staying at the Sandals Resort in Negril, Jamaica. After looking at the cost and pictures, we decided it would be a great idea. The idea of staying at an ultra all-inclusive resort sounded right up our alley.

Finally, after a year-long engagement, we got married in our hometown and were headed to Jamaica for our honeymoon. From the beginning, even the flight exceeded our expectations. We flew Air Jamaica, which was only a 2 1/2 hour flight from Atlanta, but we were still served with a hot breakfast and there were mini TVs onboard. It was an unexpected surprise since we kept hearing everyone complain about how poor the services are on planes nowadays.

When we arrived at the Montego Bay airport, we headed off to the Sandals lounge where we could relax and have some drinks while the staff handled our luggage. Then they called out the resorts individually (there are several Sandals/Beaches resorts in Jamaica) and we loaded onto a shuttle bus. The ride is about an hour and a half and it was quite an adventure, to say the least. There seem to be no traffic laws other than a system of horns honking and headlights flashing. Everyone passes everyone on the road and you seem to be in a constant game of chicken as you go head on with oncoming traffic to pass cars. Fortunately, we made it there safe and sound.

Once we got to the resort we waited for check in. After about 15-20 minutes, a gentleman greeted us and said he would take us to our room. As we were walking to our room, he informed us that we had been upgraded to the river suites and that we also had butler service. I could have cried, I was so excited! Our room was absolutely amazing! The bathroom is the size of my childhood bedroom. There are two plasma TVs in the room, a large and extremely comfortable bed, a fully stocked minifridge, and a selection of liquors in dispensers in the cabinets. Every thing about the room was obviously designed with great detail and we were very impressed. The river suites section was built only about three months ago and so everything was still nice and new. We learned that we had two butlers, Kenrick and Myron, who alternated shifts. We also learned that we had a cell phone to carry with us on the resort to contact them at any time. Let me just say, the butlers were excellent! They were very polite and helpful and such a delight to have. Our trip would not have been what it was without them! Every morning we got up and went down to the beach and there would be two chairs, towels, floats, an umbrella, a stocked cooler with beer, water, and sodas ready for us with our names on the table. Each day we called and made reservations for dinner and each night our butler would come to our room about 5 minutes beforehand and escort us down to the restaurant past everyone else who had to wait. As for the restaurants, the food was great. I consider myself a food connoisseur (simply because I love to eat) and I couldn't find a meal there I didn't like even if I tried. I don't understand how people could complain about anything on the resort, much less, the food. We ate at all of them, the Barefoot Restaurant, Kimono's, Sundowner, The 4C's, and Bayside. We also had the buffet breakfast and lunch from the Bayside and lunch from the Beach Grille. To be fair, my husband is a very picky eater and even he loved everything we ate.

As for activities that the resort offers, there are several to choose from including: snorkeling, parasailing, jet skiing, scuba diving, etc. (Note: some of them do have a charge). We went on the glass bottom boat ride and did some snorkeling. Snorkeling was an amazing experience. The tour guides were hilarious and we had a blast with them. Once you get out into the middle of the ocean you get off and swim around for about 30 minutes. We went through a cave and saw all sorts of marine life. One of the guides is there to point out certain things of interest and also to take pictures. It was one of the highlights of our trip.

Overall, our honeymoon was fantastic!! My husband and I have never been so relaxed (and lazy). After all the stress of planning a wedding, this was the perfect vacation! We were very sad to go and are already planning our return trip for our anniversary.

“Small things about Sandals Negril”

Sandals Negril Beach Resort & Spa

5 of 5 stars
Little Rock, AR

My trip to Sandals Negril was an experience of a lifetime. From most of the reviews you can probably gather whether Sandals is right or wrong for your next vacation; however if you have already booked a trip to Sandals Negril...hear is a few small things to note.

The beach in Negril is incredible. It's better than any beach i've been to in mexico and St. Lucia. Don't even compare the beach in MoBay or Ocho Rios to Negril. You can walk 20 yard from shore and still stand waist deep in water.

The drinks made by every bar are more than generous. The bartenders don't hesitate adding an extra splash if you request it. Beer gets hot in the glasses quick. Some of our friends bought coffee travel mugs to keep their beer colder longer.

Morning breakfast is always the right peace to wake-up too. Usually Sandals has a gentleman playing acoustic guitar and singing as you eat. Blue mountain coffee, water, and mimosa's are served during breakfast.

The pool is very small at the resort. Most people spent their time on the beach rather than the pool. If you want to spend your time at the pool...get out their early enough to reserve a seat.

Sandals provides many photographers that will capture some great photos to purchase. We opted for a cd to make as many copies as we wanted back home. Be weary though, the pictures and cd's aren't affordable. Approx. $15 a photo.

Snorkeling at Sandals is well worth the 1 hour excursion. The guides are plenty entertaining as you boat to the reef. The snorkeling is free as apart of Sandals.

For any off resort visits, I reccomend a visit to Rick's Cafe before sunset. The bar / resturant has live music at sunset and plenty of fun for those cliff divers. Don't be afraid, it appears much higher than it actually feels when you step off the edge. A place not to visit is Margaritaville. The bar / resturant is flocked with cruise vactioners that litter the beach with trash and the crowds make getting a drink nearly impossible.

Another popular tour in the area is the black river, appleton rum tour, and YS falls. All three are plenty entertaining if you book them togather, but i wouldn't do each seperatly. The drive from Negril is roughly 80-90 minutes to the area where they are all located.

When we booked our trip, we split our time in Negril at Sandals on the beach and the Rockhouse hotel on the cliffs. I highly reccomend anyone considering this trip to check both hotel / resorts out. The rockhouse provided us a much relaxed atmosphere (not as fun to me) but the beauty of the resort was 10 x better than anywhere i've ever spent in the world.

“Love For Sandals Only”

This is our third time at Sandals Negril and our tenth time at the Sandals properties.....I have traveled to other all inclusives and have also cruised but Sandals is like no other...The hotel is incredible and the people who work there are so special and warm and friendly...
We never had a dull moment from the time we got there until we left...We snorkeled, swam in the warm sea, floated in the sea and rode the hobie's...There is so much to do on the property and if you just want to relax you can do that too...
The food was incredibly wonderful and the drinks great.....
We love it so much there that we are planning on going back the first week of December...We have been going on average twice a year and wish we could go more!
I would make a wonderful spokes person for Sandals as thats how much I would highly reccomend it to anyone who wants an all inclusive getaway just for adults....I have 9 grandchildren and sometimes just like my time away for a while and with Sandals thats exactly what I get...
Anyone with children should definately try Beaches thats the family resort....I have seen the properties but choose not to stay there but everyone I have spoken to with children who have been at Beaches love it too....

“Great time, but no five star resort”

Sandals Negril Beach Resort & Spa

Overall my husband and I had a great time at Sandals Negril. We're used to cruising so we thought we'd try something different and go to a resort for a week instead. Here is a summary of the good and bad. The ride from Montego Bay to the resort is kind of a pain but not really that bad, about 90 minutes. The resort itself is immaculately clean and kept up. The water and beach are beautiful. We booked a loft suite but they upgraded us to the river suites when we arrived. Excellent! The rooms and location were phenomenal, no complaints there! The butlers we had were great. One was better than the other but we still tipped them the same. It was more relaxing than a cruise and the resort never seemed crowded even though it was supposedly full. Ok, the downside....definitely the food, it was terrible. If you're not used to eating out you'd probably think it was great but my husband and I have traveled quite a bit and eaten in great restaurants and the food was very disappointing. 1 restaurant (bayside) offered a beef tenderloin steak...it was so rubbery we could not chew it. When I ordered a seafood pasta, they made it with imitation crabmeat! You're in the carribbean, who does that? We found that the service of the restaurant waitstaff was not friendly at all. You had to tackle someone to get you another drink or refill your water glass. Unfortunately since it's all inclusive, there is no incentive for these people to act like they care. The butlers were great but they also were the only ones on the resort that you were supposed to tip. The nightlife was a little boring. I prefer the cruise where you can either be alone and low key or there are a ton of bands or shows to view. We'lI go back to Sandals I'm sure in a few years to a different island but if they want to be 5 star, they just need to improve on a few things. Overall it really was a nice vacation though.

“The Tale of the Stolen Chocolates- A Wedding Story”

Sandals Negril Beach Resort & Spa

My husband and I were married at Sandals-Negril in the end of April. We have no regrets, as our wedding turned out beautifully. We had 21 guests for our event. We found that the people who booked the low-end rooms were relatively disappointed. The entry level rooms are nothing to look at. When booking, I would recommend booking a concierge level room, with hopes of an upgrade. We were originally “upgraded” to a Honeymoon Beachfront Suite room (7204). Upon entering, the room reeked of smoke, and we, as non-smokers, were not pleased. Someone came and sprayed Febreze, and being that the room was significantly bigger than our booked room, we settled in for the night. At 11:00 the music started blaring. We complained as we are not late night people, and were told that the music at the nightclub would end at 1am. We put in our earplugs and finally fell asleep- after 1. The next day, we were upgraded to a Riverfront swim-up suite. We had read several reviews of people who had been upgraded to these and had hoped for one for ourselves. Interestingly, we were not given a butler as per other reviews, but one look at the room and we had no complaints. The room was gorgeous. Timi, our concierge, was attentive to our needs, so a butler seemed unnecessary.
As for our wedding, it met, if not exceeded, our expectations. Monique in the Spa did my hair and French manicure and did a great job. While I did not like the idea of paying for these services before coming down to Negril, it DID help with the culture shock when we received our final bill on check-out. Mishel, our wedding coordinator in Negril, was fun to work with. We did buy the twilight package, guaranteeing a wedding at sunset (also well worth the money!). The photographer seemed a bit odd, but the pictures turned out great. The package included 12 pictures. We bought 13 additional photos and had it not been cost-prohibitive, we would have bought more. The package also contained a DVD, which was of fairly nice quality. We struggled with the idea of paying $50 per person extra for a dinner in that this is an all-inclusive resort, but believe me, IT IS WORTH EVERY PENNY. We had a table set up on the beach complete with palms and tiki torches. We ordered the tenderloin and Mahi Mahi as our entrees, and this was the best meal that we had in Negril.
While our wedding dinner food was fantastic, the remainder of the food we ate at the resort fell in the fair to good category. Desserts left something to be desired.
One occurrence left me with a bit of distrust toward the staff. We had created gift bags to be distributed to our guests. 2 of the bags were never delivered- “because the people hadn’t been in their room when they called”. We delivered one and put the other back in our room. We went to Rick’s Café, and upon return, we found that the bag had been rifled through and the box of chocolates from the bag had been stolen. Oddly, despite items of value being left out in our room, the chocolates were the only thing missing. Not a big deal, but unnerving nonetheless. We did find that despite diligently locking our door to the swim-up suite, that door often would be unlocked when we would return to the room, allowing the opportunity for anyone to just walk right in.
We did switch to Couples Swept Away for a honeymoon after 5 days at Sandals. While Swept Away was a fabulous resort (see review), we feel that Sandals better met our wedding needs than Swept Away would have. Sandals appears to accommodate many more “large weddings” and in my opinion has better options of wedding sites (4 gazebos vs. 1 odd looking gazebo or an arch and palms in the sand at Swept Away).
