This tour was inclusive in our honeymoon package at Rio Vista Villas (which is conveniently 5 minutes walk from Rafter's Rest) We left the rafting until the end of our holiday and picked a day with bright sunshine. It is best to go when it is sunny as a dull day will make it perhaps a bit chilly in the valley. We were shuttled up into the hills by our friends at Rio Vista, and stopped to buy a souveneir mini raft along the way, which given the great day we were about to have was worth the US$5!
Before you get on the raft be prepared to be hustled by various guys who want to sell you cold drinks and take your picture before you set out! Only minutes into the rafting trip a Rasta on another raft came up to us and opened his "floating bar" where we could buy soft drinks or Red Stripe (not bad at JA$2000) and he even offered us a joint, which we politely declined. None of these guys were pushy and the guy who we paid JA$1000 to in exchange for taking our picture took a great shot!!
If you are energetic, adventurous, not scared of heights, and like water then ask your Raft Captain to take you to Scatter Falls and Foxes Caves en-route. If you do, he'll pull over a few minutes into the trip on the opposite river bank and you'll take a 15 minute walk through the forest to a spectacular waterfall which you can climb barefoot in swimwear - really refreshing - and sit in a natural spa at the bottom. Foxes caves is worth going into if you're not claustaphobic or afraid of bats!! If doing this extra visit make sure you've got comfortable walking shoes - it can be muddy.
For the actual rafting trip we wore shorts and t-shirt and were able to take a small rucksack that stayed dry. Be sure to wear swimwear or have it on underneath as there are some lovely swimming spots which the Raft Captain will point out to you.
A highly recommended excursion - bear in mind that Monday mornings they get a lot of cruise ship customers - mid week is better if you can.
