“Don't stay here in San Juan - I have another recommendation”

At Wind Chimes Inn

2 of 5 stars
rochester, ny
Mar 16, 2008

My wife and I were on our honeymoon for our Puerto Rico trip. We felt we paid too much for what we received. First of all, it seems like Wind Chimes Inn charges about 25% tax when everyone else on the island charges about 9%. We paid over $150 per night with taxes included when we only booked the room for $120 per night - do the math, that is a ton of "taxes". We didn't know better though, because it was the first hotel we stayed in. The room was nicely decorated but pretty small - also, we were given a room right beside the lobby and the front door, even though we told the lady at check-in that we were on honeymoon and wanted some peace and quiet. This definitely caused some problems, what with the spring breakers slamming doors and yelling in the lobby til about 3:30 am every night and the hotel not doing anything to calm the freaks down. Nothing is complimentary and you WILL get nickel and dimed more than anywhere else. Also, the hot water seemed to be non-existent half of the time - take a quick shower if you stay here. It is close to the beach and shops and restaurants which is nice. Also - no parking unless you want to pay $10 per day, and it is pretty difficult to find a spot near the Inn. All in all, the Inn is clean and nicely decorated, but we felt it is overpriced and doesn't offer very good service or value. As a recommendation, we stayed at another hotel in San Juan called the Oceana Hostal Playero on the latter part of our trip and enjoyed a much quieter, nicer, and much less expensive stay. Hope this helps!

“beautiful hotel 7 helpful friendly staff”

My fiance & I stayed for 7 days and found the service to be friendly and welcome. We were initially booked at Wind Chime but was "upgraded" on arrival. Turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Our room was quite small...but never planned on being in it much anyways. Had a good view...easy access to the LARGE hot tub, which we used nightly. Restaurant in hotel was absolutely fabulous...amazing food & great service! Make sure you make a reservation, well worth your time and money.
Beach was 1 minute walk away...clean, large with a stunning sunset. At Wind Chimes had a small but pleasant boat bar...friendly service..but a little pricey. Lots of restaurants, shopping, pharmacies, etc, within a couple blocks. We really enjoyed the greek restaurant just up the road. We rented a car to explore...well worth it...but be careful driving...drivers tend to be impatient.

“Reservations Don't Mean Much”

At Wind Chimes Inn

Don’t count on staying here just because you have reservations. We reserved four nights at the hotel many months ago, and were looking forward to staying here. We arrived on the 14th, reservation number in hand, the person at the front desk looked us up on the computer, then informed us that yes, they had a room all ready, for ONE night. We told her that we reserved four nights, but to no avail. She checked and checked and she was ever so sorry, but nothing was showing up, and there was absolutely nothing available except for that one night on the 14th. Considering that the hotel has a three day minimum stay policy it remains a mystery to us how we were booked for only one night when we reserved. But when we asked, we were told that the person who supposedly made the mistake when she reserved for us was no longer working there.

The desk person did try to help us and called several other places to try to find us a room, as did the lady who I believe was the manager, but this being Valentine’s Day as well as President’s Day weekend preceding winter break and cruises for many people, there was absolutely nothing available in the price range similar to At Wind Chimes Inn. Finally we were able to find a room at the Condado Plaza (which I will review separately), but that meant that this vacation cost us more than twice as much as what we were originally counting on spending. And, as the icing on the cake, we had to spend another 14 dollars to take a second taxi to the Condado Plaza from this hotel, on top of the 16 from the airport to Wind Chimes.

I think as a gesture to make up for the ineptitude in making reservations, they could have offered to pay for the second cab, or at the very least, offer us a drink on the house before we left for the Condado. But aside from “so sorry,” nothing was offered.

So, my recommendation is to call and double check your reservations before you leave for the Wind Chimes Inn; don’t assume that just because you have reservations you will actually end up staying here.

To be fair, I want to point out the "terrible" experience rating (one star) reflects only the lost reservation and stress of not having a room after a long day of travel. It does not reflect the hotel itself, such as rooms, restaurant, or service. For all we know, that may have been wonderful. We just didn't get to experience it.

“Good times at the wind chimes....”

At Wind Chimes Inn

My husband and I and our two very young children stayed at the Wind Chimes Inn for four nights, January 29-Feb 2nd. It is a cozy, beautiful little hacienda in the heart of San Juan. Only a short walk to Condado beach. The staff are helpful and knowlegeable; anytime we needed something, they were there IMMEDIATELY. I have heard that some rooms are very small, tv's are small, etc. However, we had a beautiful King room with a decent sized tv and a little kitchenette. It was cozy and comfortable. There was a fold out futon for our 4 year old to sleep on, and the front desk staff immediately brought extra sheets and blankets for him. The food at the Boat Bar is very good, as are the drinks! It was easy to take a short walk to Bebo's Cafe, the bus stop, the beach or a drug store. I felt very at home at the Wind Chimes and would definitely stay there again.

The only imperfections: our room was right next to the boat bar (as my husband says, the bar was in our living room--we actually had to walk through it to get to our room) and it got a bit noisy in the am for us 10am risers. The noise at night didn't bother us. Also parking is VERY limited; you can pay $10/night if you have a compact car to park in the tiny gated lot---but there is only space for 4 vehicles. Otherwise, you're fighting for space on the side street, which is no easy task.

I loved the Wind Chimes and have wonderful memories there now. Will probably stay again on our next trip!
I am in love with Puerto Rico.

“Charming Small Hotel - We Loved It”

At Wind Chimes Inn

4 of 5 stars

My husband and I stayed at the Wind Chimes Inn, San Juan from 1/30/08 to 2/2/08 prior to departing on a cruise.

This is a charming hotel with an attentive staff. The room was not large but very clean and pleasant. We had Room 106 on the first floor just off the courtyard.

You enter the hotel thru a wooden door just off the street. There are about 8 stairs leading to the entrance foyer. The front desk reception is off to your right and although small it is still functional. There are french doors off the reception area leading out to the small pool and water fountain area.

There are two floors to the Inn but we didn't explore the second floor. After checking in, we went directly to our room down a small hallway to a courtyard. The courtyard had small tables and chairs and lots of potted plants. There were also large concrete fish sitting by the potted plants.

The rooms are small with colorful bedspreads. Each room has a ceiling fan and a/c. The bathroom is exceptionally small with a shower only. All the floors are tile. The room was clean and comfortable and suited our needs for a 2 night pre cruise stay. Even though there is a three night minimum, it was cheaper for us to do that than to pay over $280 a night elsewhere.

Breakfast isn't included but can be purchased at the Boat Bar in the rear of the property. Very friendly staff at the bar. The A5 bus to Old San Juan is close by and easy to use. The beach is very close and easily walkable from the hotel.

I would stay here again. There is only one drawback and that is the lack of restaurants in the area that are within walking distance.
