We traveled to the PDP on a timeshare exchange. Based on the reviews I read before we left, I was very worried about the conditions we would find.
We've been to St Maarten twice before (Royal Islander and Flamingo) and knew that we would have preferred a beach location, but needed 2 bedrooms and PDP was the only offering that fit that need.
The PDP was obviously once a very grand place. If all 3 of the properties where we have stayed were each in their original condition, there is no doubt that PDP would be the best.
Pros:
quiet;
very large 2-bedroom unit with King bed in one room and Queen in the other;
two large, well-appointed marble bathrooms;
harbor view from balcony of every unit;
grocery, three restaurants, casino, spa, fitness center, tennis courts, 2 pools all on site
Small beach by the units with play area for kids
Cons:
(We were there in low season, so some of the facitilies were not open and might be reopened by the time high season gets here).
Lagoon location means no waves at the "beach"
Car rentals were extremely expensive compared to the airport (we had a full-size for $105/wk from one of the majors at the airport)
Waterfall pool was closed for major repairs (fitness center pool is not convenient to the units for a quick swim).
Grocery was closed.
Restaurants seemed to be on a limited schedule.
Debris from recent painting was scattered in the gardens below the balcony (very unsightly)
Several small maintenance issues in the unit (were fixed on the second request)
Overall wear and tear has taken a bit of shine off of the whole place, but it is not the horror story that I read about in other reviews. I would definitely stay there again if I needed to have a 2 bedroom unit and could not get one elsewhere on my exchange. I would probably even stay there on a one-bedroom exchange (but I would want the pool to be open and I would specifically request a unit on the bridge side for the better views).
