“Not all that bad”

We traveled to the PDP on a timeshare exchange. Based on the reviews I read before we left, I was very worried about the conditions we would find.
We've been to St Maarten twice before (Royal Islander and Flamingo) and knew that we would have preferred a beach location, but needed 2 bedrooms and PDP was the only offering that fit that need.
The PDP was obviously once a very grand place. If all 3 of the properties where we have stayed were each in their original condition, there is no doubt that PDP would be the best.

Pros:
quiet;
very large 2-bedroom unit with King bed in one room and Queen in the other;
two large, well-appointed marble bathrooms;
harbor view from balcony of every unit;
grocery, three restaurants, casino, spa, fitness center, tennis courts, 2 pools all on site
Small beach by the units with play area for kids

Cons:
(We were there in low season, so some of the facitilies were not open and might be reopened by the time high season gets here).
Lagoon location means no waves at the "beach"
Car rentals were extremely expensive compared to the airport (we had a full-size for $105/wk from one of the majors at the airport)
Waterfall pool was closed for major repairs (fitness center pool is not convenient to the units for a quick swim).
Grocery was closed.
Restaurants seemed to be on a limited schedule.
Debris from recent painting was scattered in the gardens below the balcony (very unsightly)
Several small maintenance issues in the unit (were fixed on the second request)

Overall wear and tear has taken a bit of shine off of the whole place, but it is not the horror story that I read about in other reviews. I would definitely stay there again if I needed to have a 2 bedroom unit and could not get one elsewhere on my exchange. I would probably even stay there on a one-bedroom exchange (but I would want the pool to be open and I would specifically request a unit on the bridge side for the better views).

    • Tips/Secrets: — rent a car at the airport. Be prepared to travel the island and visit the beaches. Don't miss the lolo's (backyard bbq style restaurants) in Grand Case and eat at Lee's Roadside Grill early in the trip - you'll want to go back.

“TRIP #12 TO ST. MAARTEN, THIS WAS THE NASTIEST PLACE WE'VE STAYED AT”

We have a timeshare in Olando through RCI so we trade every year to go to St. Maarten. This year we were unable to stay at Sapphire Beach or the Pelican and Port de Plaisance was offered.
From the minute we got there til we left it was awful! The rooms are old and not clean, bathrooms old, cracked mirrors, bath tub didn't drain, they couldn't fix it. We were told NOT to drink the water from the faucets (that was a first for this island). Cost of bottled water $$$$$$. The pool was in utter disrepair, dirty, missing tiles, filter not working. There is no pool bar or drink service at the pool. You have to beg for a pool towel by the way.!
The grounds at the entrance are trimmed, when you get back to the room, the flower beds are full of weeds and unkempt.
We were totally disappointed and actually went to the Sapphire to see if we could get a room there and pay for it, they were full.
this is by far the worse place we have ever stayed on the Island.
The casino was good, staff there lovely that was the only fun part of our resort experience.
Hotel lobby staff not particularly helpful either.........The star rating should be a -1.....Save your money!!!

We recently returned for the pdp and we were shocked at the condition of the resort. The amenities that were written in the brochure and the RCI book were there but they were not open. The pool was missing hundreds of tiles, The bars were not open, the marina store was not open and the mini-market was closed and empty. They advertise 3 restaurants two were open. There was no where to get breakfast except for the poorly stocked 28USD sunday Brunch. The staff was poor in response., The best employees were the security guards who were the most helpful. They seemed to care. The front desk offered no semblance of interestin anything. The car rental place was poor. We arrived on Sat and they were not available. On SSunday we were told that they would return our inquiry. We finally were able to get a car on Monday. The activity clerk was very nice when she was open. Monday and Tuesday and closed for the rest of the week.
Our room was adeqate but in disrepair. The fold out couch was broken, The roll away beds that were substituted were missing or looosing wheels, The Icemaker was broken, the garbage disposal as broken, and the dishwasher did not clean the dishes. The staff did repair these items but it showed us that the management was more concerned with the casino instead of the guests.
St Maarten may be a wonderful Island but the PDP is not a recommendation that I can Make.

“PDP is coming back.”

We stayed at PDP this year in May after a year's absence. We were quite pleased with the changes that have been made. We normally have a Studio unit, but our unit was being used as a model, so we were upgraded to a one-bedroom.
The unit was quite clean and had been upgraded since our last visit. New upholstery has been put on the sofa, chairs and dining chairs. New curtains and bedspreads have been added. Not exactly "high quality" but clean! There are still a few glitches that need to be remedied, including the lanai furniture, which could use some upgrading. There are also still some pool tiles missing in the waterfall pool. They did add some new umbrellas and lounge chairs which were nice, but could use some more. There were times when we went down to the pool and there weren't any chairs or umbrellas available.
The resort has been painted and looks good as far as landscaping is concerned. There is a very good restaurant on the premises called La Guinguette, which overlooks the marina and serves very good reasonably priced food. The restaurant in the casino (La Baccara) has gotten alot of publicity from the resort, but did not appeal to us, with the view of the casino and the heavy smell of cigarette smoke. We did want to see the show, but no one could tell us when it was happening. Apparently, after speaking with 5 different people, we found out that they don't have a show in off-season.!!
All in all, it was a very nice trip this year and I am heading back down in July.

I've owned a timeshare here when it was new and a 5 star resort. I've seen the best it can be and I've definately seen the worst. (after the hurricane). I must confess that when I returned there this year, I expected another year of disappointment. That did not happen. The resort has improved at least 100% from last year and while I was there I could see improvements daily. There is a conserted effort going on to bring Port de Plaisance back to where it once was. The Mega Yachts are there, the grounds are in remarkable condition, and the staff goes out of their way to be helpful. If you are looking for party central----this is not the place to be. If you are looking for a resort that has a touch of class-----by all means this is it. The rooms still need some improvement and it seems that that issue was being addressed. The two pools are in excellent condition, new cushions were being measured and ordered for the lounge chairs while I was at the pool, the gym has very good equipment, the spa and staff are first rate, and there was four resturants to eat at. The pool snack bar food and drinks are reasonably priced and good. The only drawback is that the other three resturants are mostly French cruisine, but the food is excelent at all three. They now have a car rental facility on site. I'm giving them a 3 star+ rating and can't wait till my next years trip.
