“Loved Pussers Marina Cay”

Pusser's Marina Cay Hotel and Restaurant

We wanted to get away before the holidays, and based on the recommendations of our kids who'd eaten at the Pussers Marina Cay (PMC) restaurant before, we decided to reserve a hotel room there. Alison, the proprietor, was a great help with getting us a reservation, and greeted us promptly upon arrival.

Don't think "hotel" - think instead of a beautiful little 8-acre island with a series of small cabanas and a really good restaurant, a general store, a small beach, and a restaurant and bar. That's Pusser's Marina Cay. No TV, no phones, no radios. Just a quiet little getaway.

As the 1st week in December was still in the slow season, we were given a courtesy upgrade to one of the empty villas, and what a wonderful place that was! To be able to sleep with the windows open and enjoy the breeze, and not to hear any sounds of civilization at all. And then to get up in the morning, put on a pot of coffee, and watch a glorious sunrise develop every morning - that's what I call relaxation (see pictures that I've attached to this review).

We were also spoiled by an outdoor shower - it is just too much fun to shampoo while watching catamarans sailing in the distance.

And overall the restaurant on the island was very good, although we did not hesitate to take the free ferry to the mainland (Tortola) a number of times in order to sample the fare of other very good restaurants.

So - if you are looking for a quiet place to kick back with some good books, or are divers (as we are) that appreciate having a great dive shop right on the premises (DiveBVI), then this is the place for you. On the other hand, if you have kids that are in need of water slides, big pools, and constant entertainment, then best find some place else.

But thanks to the wonderful hospitality of Alison and all of the other great staff - we'll be back.

We were looking for quiet and relaxation and Marina Cay delivered ten fold. Food is good, snorkeling is great. We saw some really funky fish including a couple Sting Rays. I recommend two or three nights if you go to Tortola.

Stayed at Marina cay 5 nights for 20 wedding anniversary! Had a wonderful time. Allison is one of the best Hostesses around. Property is nothing fancy, but well kept and food at resturant is second to none. If you stay several nights, plan day trips to different islands. Nightly views and morning sunrises are spectacular!

Beautiful surroundings on a small island across from Trellis Bay. More than half of the island surrounded by a reef and lagoon. Nice snorkeling.

However, honestly: the place has no beach. The only thing is in fact the sand covered restaurant patio near the water, including plastic hoses running criss-cross, ending with a sharp rock edge towards the water, all not exclusive to hotel guests. All restaurant traffic and noises included, all day.

Not far off from civilzation either: all departing aircraft traffic from Beef Island Airport goes directly overhead.

The villa we had was nice and spacious, thogh NO A/C. Some things like doors, door catches and sanitary installation urgently need rework, having crossed the border from "romantic" to "broken".

The breakfast at the restaurant: Eggs, or eggs, or if you like something else, you might choose eggs. No cereals, let alone pancakes or french toast or the like. All such requests are answered with an unambiguous, if unfriendly, "no".

Evening food is ok. Some aspects of the property clearly do not reflect a 400+ dollars per night price tag. Like not having a small safe in the room.

Pusser´s Store nearby with unfriendly staff.

All in all, with only a little more effort and attention, which could be expected at the price, the place could improve a lot.

“Wishing we were there!!!!!!!!!”

Best place of our lives. We consider moving near Marina Cay!! (okay - I guess we'll just visit annually!) Once finding Marina Cay on the searches for the British Virgin Islands, I was lured with the great reviews. It seemed small in my mind, but after contacting and reading all of the trip advisor members whom enjoyed their stay there, I thought - okay we'll take the shot at the unknown. I had this insurance policy of booking over half of our stay in British Virgin Islands at the +++++ star resort: Peter Island. Before reading on - we HAVE travelled to Costa Rica, Hawaii, Spain, Mexico - and love our experiences. We started in Marina Cay for our BVI trip - My husband and I brought our teenage son (16) and daughter (14) to Marina Cay the second week of June 2007. We flew separately - my husband and son's plane came in on time around 3:30 pm. My daughter and I didn't arrive until after 10:30 p.m. THANK you to the ferry drivers willing to accommodate us after hours. The Caribbean speaks for itself. As much as I adore Alison on Marina Cay - I wouldn't require much more than a hello during the week. She offers so much more and genuinely cares about each guest. We were delighted with her forthcoming nature, upbeat manner and prefer that over phoniness and grandeur. Alison offers her heart and experience as well as very qualified people to help with transportation and services. Give me a real person anyday over the phony/bologna you get with 5 star/dark boring places. We could have paid for a hotel that looks the same as the inside of the Peter Island rooms for far less. No ocean breeze, no view, and no phone service although they claimed is was in place. We actually missed a dive trip due to Peter Island not connecting with us IN THE ROOM with a message. What we found missing from Peter Island at $1,500 a night was : unwilling to honor having our teens in a room next to ours, not letting us know ahead of time that a mother/daughter need to sport formal island attire for the dinner (their casual place was closed) (However- had I felt like spending $400.00 extra dollars in their giftshop for attire - it would have worked - but we are beach and dive people - we're just hungry!!!) Although the former reviewer stated they had poor experiences with ferrys and ferry times at Marina Cay , we experienced quite the opposite. We are probably more aligned with the experiences had by the other positive writers. Alison gave us similar advice about Roadtown as the former reviewer. I wish we would have taken her advice. She has been there years, and we chose to head to Roadtown to shop anyways. We wasted a day - and she was RIGHT ON about her recommendations about not only Roadtown - but how long each journey we chose would take timewise, including travel, ferrys and returns. We APPRECIATED her wisdom and her experience. All that said, the staff at the restaurant was UNREAL - the cooks and servers recognized us - and cared - but we wouldn't have even expected that!!!!! The accommodations are BEYOND BELIEF!!!! Even if we weren't diving people, we'd love it there. But! it would be remiss of me to not mention Andy/Sadie and Casey for their wonderful, kind and professional services! They were very personal and wonderful to our teens as they helped them complete their open water certification. I, as a middle age woman, or a honeymooner, couldn't possibly come up with a better place to stay than Marina Cay. Some people who don't see the beauty when is surrounds them are looking for something that isn't attainable - (former reviewer). We walked into an unexpected paradise - and chose to forfeit our stay at Peter Island to come back to Marina Cay for the remainder of our vacation. We are among the majority of positive people, loving a positive place. EACH DAY WE MISS MARINA CAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
