Sunset House

I have some mixed feelings about Sunset House in Grand Cayman. First, they treated us like children. Many of us were rescue divers or tech divers and they still were telling us how long we could stay down for and how deep we could go. Our group leader had 9000+ dives done and he was still being lectured on his dive profile. Even if we had 1200 psi left, they would still make us come up. While I understand them placing these limits on divers to help prevent injury, experienced divers could surely figure out for themselves what sort of dive profile was safe. They have a natural ocean pool which was nice for beginning divers to take lessons but the water in there seemed stagnant and there was a lot of seaweed in there. With respect to the actual diving, many of the sites were quite nice. The Wreck of the Balboa was a good dive and so was sentinel rock, little tunnels and the aquarium north and south. However, we did not get to see many of the wall dives that the Caymans are known for. (Not sure why) There were many fish and somewhat healthy coral. However, places like Bonaire, Belize and Cozumel all were better, in my opinion, and way cheaper. We did 2 night dives off of the back of the hotel and on one dive we saw nothing but a single starfish and some sleeping parrot fish and on the second dive the next night we saw 2 or 3 lobsters and some small fish swimming around but that was about it. Overall, the night dives off of the hotel were a total bust. Next was the service. Many of the waitresses seemed like they did not care about the patrons. They would walk away after taking an order from only one person sitting at the table and leaving 2 or 3 others waiting for her to come back to get food or drink orders taken. On many occasions our breakfast order was either delayed or totally forgotten. As for the rooms, they were ok. The beds were comfortable, but the rest of the room seemed kind of run down. The in-room fridge was a small cube with a little freezer section that was slow to make ice cubes. The front desk staff were quite nice and the on-premise store had food and drinks for sale at a reasonable price. Overall, I felt that the Sunset House did not live up to its reputation of being one of the best resorts on the island. It was ok, but nothing great.

“A Great Hotel For Divers”

Sunset House

Mar 28, 2008

My wife and I visited the Sunset House hotel the first week of March, 2008. This was our first trip after receiving our PADI divers certifications. We are more accustomed to staying at large resorts like the Palace in Cozumel, MX. However, we choose the Sunset House because we wanted to spend much of our vacation time diving.

The hotel is very well equipped for divers. There are plenty of good sized lockers. The dive center, gear cleaning stations, lockers, boat dock, tanks, and sore dive entry points are all locate near each other. The dive staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. Every morning we set out on a two tank boat dive. They try and keep the same groups of people together on the different boats. This let everyone see different dive sights and helped us to make friends. We never visited the same dive sight twice. We had lunches and dinners with other hotel guests we met on the boat. We took one afternoon to go diving at Stingray City, which was a lot of fun.

The shore diving was a great way for us to practice our diving skills and a nice place to go diving. Shore diving at the Sunset House is very easy. During the day, there are always tanks available a short walk from the entry point. For night diving, we put tanks in our lockers.

We enjoyed the food at the hotel, which is not always easy for vegetarians. The beds were comfortable for hotel beds. The room did not come with an iron, in room safe, or hair dryer. The room did have a small refrigerator and a TV. The had safe deposit boxes at the lobby and a computer with internet access. The overall atmosphere was positive and the hotel grounds and Grand Cayman in general were very clean. George Town is about a 15-20 minute walk. There were plenty of places where there was no sidewalk and we were sharing the road with traffic. I think it is reasonably safe to make the walk during the day but we took a taxi at night. We ate at Bacchus Restaurant & Wine Bar and really loved it. Most of the shops in George Town closed around 5:00 or 6:00 pm. We did not try going into town while the cruise ships were at port. Hell was only good for a quick photo. The turtle farm is a good place to see captive green sea turtles but we enjoyed seeing turtles while diving more.

Our vacation at the Sunset House was excellent. I look forward to visiting again.

My wife and I have been to Sunset House about 30 times in the last 20 years. We have never had less than a wonderful experience. The staff from the general manager to the goundskeepers and housekeepers have always been friendly and helpful. The general manager lives on premises right over the dive shop. The diving is excellent, particularly the shore diving right in front of the property - wall, reef, wreck and mermaid. It is also the normal area that the Atlantis Submarine operates in which makes for some interesting photos. The dive staff will give you as much or as little help as you desire. The restaurants and bar are also top notch. We just returned from an 8-night stay and never left the premises except once to go to the store. If you want a family friendly resort where you can get diving limited only by your computer, you can't go wrong with Sunset House.

“Great Divers' Resort”

Sunset House

We spent an enjoyable week diving at Sunset House. The place is a little old and tired, but we were there to dive. The room was spacious and clean, and everything worked. The desk staff and the restaurant staff and the dive staff were all friendly and helpful and attentive. Could not ask for more.

We dove every day on their boat as well as some shore diving and snorkeling each day. There is a lovely small clean pool to wash that salt out of your eyes after diving. The other guests were divers as well, mostly a polite quiet bunch, people very much like ourselves from all over the world.

The greatest surprise was the high quality of the meals. Breakfast was plain and served in an over-airconditioned restaurant, but lunch and dinner could be ordered at the bar or outdoor tables. The food was great, especially the Indian curry specialties.

The resort sits on ironshore, rather than a nice sandy beach, But that is what divers want, since it makes for good snorkeling and shore diving. This is not for you if you need to look at pretty white sand.

It's about half a mile from downtown. We didn't have a car, so to go to town we got to walk along a very busy road with lots of traffic at all hours and with no shoulder or sidewalk. You walk on the right facing traffic and hope for the best.

I would avoid at all costs. I arrived on a Saturday night. On Sunday morning I was told I could not dive with them, rather rudely. So I found another dive shop and resort to stay at. I checked out on Sunday morning and was told they would refund the rest of my money. When I called expedia for a refund they said that Sunset House was charging me for three nights. I was only there eight hours. The staff was rude, the food way over priced. The location is bad.
