Just back from 16 nights at the Discovery Point Club. Probably our 8th visit to Grand Cayman in as many years. Would visit more frequently but it takes a while to accumulate enough funds to support these trips as, for us U.S. folks of moderate income, Cayman IS expensive.
We always stay on the North end of Seven Mile Beach and, depending on the season and the available "special offers", select a condo someplace between the Anchorage and Aqua Bay Club. We like this area as, unlike the hotel sites closer to George Town, this end of the beach is never crowded and, even though the sand on the sea bottom moves around a bit from season to season, there's always someplace close to get into the water and a sandy bottom at or near the facility that you're staying at if you simply want to play in the water. Snorkeling is good to excellent throughout that area.
In the past we've also stayed at the Heritage Club and the London House in the same area but, due to a high rise condo being built on the former site of Tarquin Manner between these two complexes, in addition to great beaches and a nice sandy sea bottom, both of these complexes also currently afford a great view of the construction site and the noise that's associated with large scale building. Would not consider them at this point if what you're after is peace and quiet.
Discovery Point is a nice complex. On this trip we found the slope from the beach into the water to be very gradual though, for the most part, you must pick out the small spots where you can enter the water due to the exposed rock on the sea bottom running almost right up to the beach. On the flip side this means good snorkeling right from the shore on out as far as you would like to go.
The Point is a full-feature complex with a pool, jacuzzi and tennis courts, thatched huts on the beach and lots of beach chairs, lounges and tables. The huts are augmented by a number of umbrellas so shade is always available. As reported in other reviews getting a hut can be a challenge. What we found we had to do was be on the beach around 5:30 a.m. in order to capture a hut by putting towels and perhaps some personal items out under one of these structures. That was OK only because we used that shelter all day. What was BAD was that some people "reserved" a shelter/hut by putting their "stuff" out very early in the morning but then only used it perhaps an hour a day or didn't even show-up to use it until late afternoon. This should be managed in some way. In any case, to help this situation, it's our understanding that more huts/shelters are about to be added.
The condos themselves are in good shape and the entire facility is well managed. As with all of the condo complexes, do not expect your unit to look exactly like the pictures on the WEB sites. Each is decorated differently and features different furniture and bedding. Though there are minimum standards you will find that what's available for use in the kitchen from a quantity and quality standpoint (utensils, plates, glasses, cookware, accessories and gadgets) will differ from unit to unit. Just remember that the condo complexes are not hotels where every room is exactly the same.
At Discovery Point all of the condos are beach front. The first floor units will give you direct beach access (all of the patios/balconys are screened at Discovery Point) while the 2nd and 3rd floor units, which afford a MUCH better view from their balconies, require climbing stairs and walking aound the buildings to get to the beach. Though we could hear a bit of traffic noise from West Bay Road when we went to bed (most of the "master" bedrooms are on the opposite end of the condos from the main living areas which face the beach), that was not a problem for us and has neven been an issue.
Our maid service (daily except on Sunday...the "norm" for these complexes) was great. Though this service can vary a bit depending on the individual service provider and from complex to complex, in this case we had Diana taking care of us. She does a great job, become a friend and is an outstanding representive of Discovery Point and for Grand Cayman as a whole. We'll ask for her to be "ours" when we visit again.
If you stay on North Seven Mile, or about anyplace in Grand Cayman from our perspective, we recommend that you rent a car. Though nothing is very far away you'll have a lot more dining, shopping and grocery store choices if you are driving, will save money over taking cabs and be able to easily haul gear, groceries, etc. much easier than doing the cab or bus thing (though the bus service is good). Traffic moves at reasonable city speeds and it's easy to get around. Driving on the left we DO recommend a right hand drive vehicle if nothing else than to remind yourself that something is different vs. driving in the U.S.
One last item for potential returning visitors is the condition of the sea bottom and the water itself. Though things are not in pre-Ivan condition, the sea floor is cleaning up a bit, there appears to be more sand, the coral MAY be recovering a little close in and further out from shore things are looking very good (just watch out for boats and jet skis). On our last visit (in the October time period) there was a serious water clarify problem. Perhaps this was caused by heavy surf and lots of rain. During this visit....save for two or three days of "rough" sea conditions (for Cayman)...the water appeared to be clearer. Not certain what's happening to the fish population but we would observe that it's down from past visits though we still saw at least one of about everything.
Net/net, Cayman is still a good place to visit. Safe. A large variety of restaurants. Full-service grocery stores for us condo types. Killer beach. Excellent weather (this May). Good snorkeling and great diving. Over-all nice people. And Discovery Point is a excellent facility at which to stay with an outstanding location. Enjoy your trip.
