I should start by saying the Beach Club Colony Hotel & Dive Resort is awesome and we would go back in a heartbeat. We stayed from May 14-19, with two young children. We booked through Cheaper Caribbean and did the all inclusive deal. Here is a tip, don’t book the ocean view room through your travel agent. Call the hotel in person and upgrade via the phone to save a boatload of money! The rates at the Beach Club (at least through Cheaper Caribbean) were fantastic, and the all inclusive meal plan is a life saver. May was a great time to visit, weather was perfect, no mosquitoes, and Cruse Ship traffic was a non-issue. The hotel lies right in the heart of Seven Mile Beach, which you will find to be one of the most beautiful stretches of sand and sea in the world.
The hotel itself is a bit dated and the rooms are on the smaller side (especially for a family a 4). That said, we spent 95% of our time on the beach and exploring the island, so the room was perfect for us. Our room (7B) was comfortable, clean, had a great air conditioner, and the maid service kept everything spic and span. I would highly recommend getting a room facing the beach, as you get your own balcony and the beach is about 5 feet from your door. And of course the view is unbelievable!
Dining at the hotel was great, we ate all meals there. Some meals were exceptional (shrimp fried rice, ribs, etc), and all were more than adequate. Anyone can tell you dining in the Caymans is VERY pricy, and as such the all inclusive plan is an excellent value! The wait staff was very friendly, and the free drinks are fantastic. The dining room is outdoors and overlooks the ocean, a truly wonderful atmosphere.
The thing about service: By default, all waiters were kind and courteous, and quick to get our initial round of drinks. Beyond that, if you want exceptional service, be prepared to tip well. Bear in mind the Cayman dollar is worth more than the US dollar, and meals in general are pricy. This implies tips in the Caymans should be more than what you would normally tip in the US.
The all inclusive plan includes use of various water equipment and free snorkeling gear. Do yourself a favor and try it out. This was our first time snorkeling and the wife and I are not good swimmers. We found that snorkeling is surprisingly easy and the fish you see right in front of the hotel are amazing. Venture up and down 7 mile beach for coral that comes right up to the shore and you will be in for a real treat.
The island is so awesome we have to mention a few things worth doing. Rent a car, driving is great, traffic is light, and drivers are very courteous! Driving to and from the airport in Dallas was more stressful for us than driving on the Island. Though do yourself a favor and look up the rules of the roundabout. Visit Public Beach, it has huge stretches of sand and nature, no hotels. Take a submarine or a semi-submerged boat tour, the tours of the coral reefs in Georgetown are breathtaking and children will love it! Well worth the money. Hit the shops at Georgetown for some souvenirs, but not on Sunday, they are all closed (you’ll find the locals partying at their beautiful beaches =).
We could go on and on about the Cayman’s and the Beach Club. The bottom line is the hotel is fantastic and probably the best value on the island for a family (or a couple) looking for a great vacation. The island itself is a true gem. It’s heartbreaking that the hotel will close in the next year or so. Hurry up and book your stay before it’s too late, the Beach Club is the way to go for an unforgettable Cayman adventure!
