“The Mosquito Coast”

Gingerbread

Spent 5 nights here in an upper floor room which was spacious, had a great view from a large balcony across the bay but was infested with mosquitos. The nets on the bed were not decorative but a lifesaver. Even so my wife was bitten to bits. The hotel staff, and particularly the management were unwelcoming and unfriendly. I thought the hotel was expensive at $150US plus tax and service charge.

We would not stay here again.

Bequia is a quiet island, off the tourist path, although frequented by many yachts. Amenities on the island are few but this was the Caribbean we wanted to see and we enjoyed our stay on this small largely unspoilt island. Beaches are easily accessed by water taxi. There are a few other hotels and restaurants around the bay but Gingerbread is generally reckoned to be the best on both counts. The Gingerbread restaurant food was poor but better than any of the other meals we had on the island !! The hotel room had a small kitchen and we often ate in rather than have worse food out for more money.

“Great place to experience the real Caribbean”

We spent the first week of our honeymoon in the Gingerbread on Bequia - our first time in the Grenadines. It was fabulous, the apartment had everything we needed. One negative was the mosquitos. Even the with net, Deet and everything else I tried, I got eaten alive but it was the "rainy season" - late May. But with no a/c and the room open to the elements it was unavoidable.
Staff were very friendly and welcoming and the restaurant was great too. Took a great taxi ride round the island - with Elson - who was fantastic and very proud of his roots! Bequia is unspoilt, extremely relaxing and friendly. Great frist taste of the Caribbean.

“cutesy, but...”

Cutesy, but not much more. The pictures look nice of the hotel, esp. of the 4 poster mosquito nett bed, but definately not a luxury place. I got eaten alive by mosquitos. There aren't many places to stay in Bequia and I think this is the best. I found the island to be too slow, boring for me. But if you want to go off the beaten path, this is it.

“Gingerbread is great”

My husband and I spent the second week of our honeymoon on Bequia at the Gingerbread. Our plan was to spend a "luxury" week on Mustique and an "economy" week on Bequia. It turned out that the accomodations at the Gingerbread were really nice. We stayed in an upper suite with a 4 poster king bed with a mosquito net. The room was huge, the bed was comfy, the bathroom was good and there was a small kitchen as well.
There were window on almost all 4 walls and a constant breeze, so not have AC wasn't an issue. Pat and team are very friendly and the restaurant is great. Try the chicken curry. We did 4 days of diving with Dive Bequia and they were SUPER. I definitely recommend both.
Bequia is what I imagine the Caribbean used to be - no cruise ships, no high rise hotels, no tourist malls, no Senor Frog's! Just small restaurants and hotels and beautiful surroundings. One recommendation is to bring mosquito spray with DEET. The mosquitos can be a bit relentless.
