“RWI Rocks! Great mini-break spot!”

Fantastic place to stay in Providenciales! This was my husband and my's second trip to the Turks and Caicos this year. We stayed at the Sands in May. And that stay was good. But the stay at the Royal West Indies TOPPED the Sands stay. The condos at the RWI are in very good shape. Everything is clean! There's even a bath tub in the bathroom! (Something the Sands - a four star resort, RWI is three and a half stars - did not have.) And the restaurant (Mango Reef) is very good and reasonably priced compared to Hemingway's, the restaurant at the Sands. (The food there was OK... Not spectacular though.)

The RWI resort does a great job of keeping things organized and the staff was very friendly there. They keep beach towels out in piles by the pools for you to pick up on your way to the beach - so convenient! And about a half mile down the road (turn right when you exit the resort's main entrance) is the Port of Calls Shopping area. There is a great Pizza Place called

Thank you to Tripadvisor members for all the reviews and info!
My boyfriend and I stayed at RWI for 5 nights in Dec. There was a shuttle waiting at the airport that we had called ahead and confirmed, no need for a cab. We booked a studio botanical view room (on the first floor) which was clean with a small kitchen, nice size fridge, nice bathroom, shower with great water pressure and temp. The little hairdryer they supply gets very hot , I was sorry I had not packed my own.
We had dinner at Mango Reef the first night -grilled swordfish and lobster with appetisers and drinks-around 110.00.

Next morning walked to Sibonne for breakfast. Really enjoyed the beautiful beach along the way and saw an (osprey?) nest with a juvenile waiting for it's breakfast. Sibonne has a very nice view and brunch on Sunday - eggs florentine and basic breakfast and mimosas around 25.00.
Back to hotel , we rented a car with Scotter Bob's, we highly recomend them. He picked us up at the hotel, went to his store to sign papers etc. Then we drove to IGA where we bought bottled water and stuff to snack on. The prices are more expensive, everything was expensive on Provo! We ended up going over our budget but it was worth it. We explored Leeward beach the first day with our car and picked up 2 nice conch shells that we brought home. For dinner we went to Sharkbite - conch chowder(yummy) sharkbite burger, grouper and drinks around 79.00. We saw a pretty big shark swimming languorously around in the water under the deck, (missed photo op #1) be sure to look!

Next day for breakfast we went to Cabana Bar&Grille at Ocean Club. Very nice view of Grace Bay - basic breakfast and omelet. From there we drove to Chalk Sound (gorgeous) there was some trash lying around, we just didn't look at it. Drove to Sapodilla bay, again gorgeous. We liked how far you could walk out in ankle deep water. We couldn't find the road to Taylor bay so went went back to our hotel to enjoy the beach.
Dinner at Hemingways OK - around 120.00

Next day breakfast at Gilley's on the marina - omelet with grits and basic breakfast (again), there was one other person there and we wondered if we had made a bad choice but the food was great. around 26.00. We went back to the hotel and upgraded our room to an ocean front in building #1, we couldn't afford an ocean front the whole stay so we did the last 2 night as such just for the view and experience. The view was worth it. The hotel staff was very accommodating. We then drove to Malcom's beach. First let me say that I was nervous driving on the left side of the road but it really wasn't bad, we both felt very comfortable driving by the end of the 3 days we had the car. I did almost freak over the roads to malcom's beach. We just took it slow and were fine, when we got to the beach we reaped our reward. What a beautiful albeit rocky beach. We saw little snails, sea urchins, we loved it. We stopped at Da Conch Shack - conch salad and fritters and rum punch (needed after Malcom's road) kidding. Very beautiful setting on a beach with Egrets and Pelicans.... we miss Provo. Dinner at Coyaba, my boyfriend LOVED this place. Lobster bisque & wedge of iceberg lettuce, lobster thermidor & grilled wahoo plus drinks over 200.00+

Next day breakfast at Saltmills Cafe - eggs benidict and (you guessed it) basic breakfast. Then went snorkeling at coral reef, very nice! Then returned the car. We were taken back to our hotel from rental agency and at this point I had been trying to book a boat excursion. What I really wanted to do was go to Middle Caicos and Mudjin Harbour but I goofed and didn't plan early enough. So we ended up doing a "wine and cheese sail" with Sail Provo? (I think). This would have ended up being little bit boring but not bad, zigging back and forth along Grace Bay, ritz crackers with a slice of cheese on top and not very good wine(we stuck to rum punches) with the sunset, not really going anywhere. Until JoJo the dolphin showed up and was tooling along with us beside the catamaran! This was very exciting for us, apparently he has a lot of gouges/scars on his back from boats running him over, or I had to wonder from his miscalculation. He swam alongside the boat for a while and would dart underneath from the middle to outside of the catamaran! Then he disappeared for 20 mins and he was back for a while. He is very cute and at one point I saw him turn on his side to get a good view of his fans, it looked like he was looking at us. We had read about JoJo but didn't actually expect to see him. We had a great time but also would have liked to go to Middle Caicos.
Dinner that night without the car at Coco Bistro. We almost didn't go to this place, but it was within easy walking distance without the car and again my boyfrind LOVED it. The setting was not on the beach but under a canopy of palms ( missed photo op # 2). Very nice - grilled shrimp satay, conch soup, veal chop and wahoo again. Plus 2 drinks- this time with dessert (fried mango/banana/plantain with vanilla ice cream) and a Caicos coffie. 200.00+

Next morning breakfast at Mango Reef - omelet and basic breakfast w/french toast. One last swim in Grace Bay, pack up remaining stuff and shuttle to airport.

Tried the hot tub at the resort but it was very HOT! Pools were nice. Grounds were nice. Do not make calls to the states on your credit card! 10$ connect fee plus call! Rent a cell phone instead or e--mail. Service was very good. Mosquitos were bad but kept at bay with bug spray, just remember to put it on/ have it with you. We have a lot of bites but almost a week later are still starry eyed over our experince. Hope this helped, don't hesitate to go!

“Good Deal for the Money”

Royal West Indies Resort

Dec 9, 2006
4/9 found this review helpful

My husband and I travelled to Royal West Indies for Thanksgiving this last year (2006). We thought it was a very good deal for the money. The rooms were large and clean. We stayed in building 200 which is characterized as ocean front. There was nothing in front of us but it was set quite a ways back from the water. The 100 building does appear to be much closer to the water and worth requesting. Nonetheless, it was a great deal for the money. I would say it was not luxurious in any way but I'd say everything was above average. One hiccup we did have was that on the first day they ran out of beach towels - which is always an annoyance when you go to a resort. The food at Mangos was decent. We went to Point Grace for a fabulous massage and our favorite restaurant was right next door at Coyaba (went there twice) and our favorite lounge was at the Grace Bay Hotel - very romantic. Beach was lovely (although our weather was not all that great). Wonderful for walking and not too crowded - definitely not secluded but people are not right on top of you....
One thing to note is that Club Med is right next door so occasionally you can hear their music if you are sitting on that area of the beach. To get around we ended up getting a gecko pass which is definitely worth asking the front desk about - Harrison was our favorite driver and very helpful

All in all, we'd definitely return....

“Good Deal”

Royal West Indies Resort

I just came back from T&C and I had a great time. I really liked my room at the RWI. It was clean and spacious. We had a dvd player and were able to rent 2 dvd's per day. The staff was friendly and helpful. We also had a microwave, toaster, some silverware and ceramics so we could cook/heat some food in our room. This really came in handy as everything on the island seemed to be really expensive -- b/c everything is imported. He hotel's restaurant, Mango, was one of the better restaurants. The beach was beautiful. It was a really pretty shade of blue with powdery white sand. The hotel keeps really maintains the beach well. Some of the other beaches on the other hotel properties weren't as clean as RWI. The only improvement I can see is to add a gym/fitness room.

“A little slice of heaven”

Royal West Indies Resort

Thank you to all the reviewers here at tripadvisor as well as the local experts. The RWI was a home run in our opinion. We only wish it were cheaper to own here as there are only resales now.

From start to finish this was the highlight of our 10 days in the Turks and Caicos. After Beaches, this was a complete turnaround and great value for the money (and it is not cheap when you add food costs in).

First, RWI is situated toward the eastern part of Grace Bay Beach and is between the Grandview (new) and Club Med. It is in the crescent bay portion of the beach and the sand is much wider and softer here. Likewise there are more substantial waves here, but body surfers and the like should love this.

Check in was efficient and quick. Other days I heard people with issues, but they were there before check in time and the place does turn over in short order as the flights tend to be bunched pretty closely. If you arrive on the first flight(s) in, you may get your room early, but the later ones will inevitably have to wait. Patience people, the housekeeping staff does a great job of keeping things immaculate. Give them time to do their job and understand that on certain days there can be massive room turnover.

The first thing of note as you see the grounds near the rooms is how lush and well maintained they are. They go to great lengths to keep things looking beautiful. As my wife put it, "This is the first place on the Atlantic that looks like Hawaii when I was growing up." Not every place has grounds like the RWI and we found out they have their own nursery. They take this seriously and do a terrific job.

We had a one bedroom botanical suite and saw others while we were there. At first when we got the building closest to the office, we were not happy. However, in the end we loved our room. Though we were ground floor and in building 8, we had a nice deck and there was privacy due to the landscaping. Getting things in when we went to the IGA (market) was a snap. The most recent buildings (6,7 and 8) seem to have upgraded interiors including granite counters. The suite was comfortable and large though in the T&C it does seem square footage includes deck space. The kitchen was in good shape and all the basic pots/plates/flatware etc was there and in good working order. Note: they assign suites in each category on a randomized basis to be fair to the owners of all the individual units. If you have an upfront preference, request it when you make your reservation. They do try to accomodate (especially people returning to the property) which most properties in T&C do not. Still, there are no guarantees, especially in season.

The onsite restaurant, Mango Reef, is very good. Of note, dress is casual. You can go in a swimsuit and t-shirt, even to dinner. The chef is French and the food was very good to excellent depending on dish. They do serve breakfast too. The kids menu is especially good and varied. The local specialties, especially the conch and the lobster dishes were excellent. AND, for the area, the prices are very reasonable. Note: food on T&C is very expensive in general. We didn't venture out because we have two small children. So, we prepared half our meals in the suite and spent the other half (including all dinners) at Mango Reef. They even reserved the same table for us each night and were flexible when the kids were tired and napped a little over scheduled time. We had multiple service people who all were good, but things do go slower in the islands. Of note, Sanadia was especially good. Not only did we get great table service, but she used to tend bar and when the kids ordered virgin Pina Coladas and Strawberry Daiquiris, she herself made them. Needless, to say, they were amazing. The waitstaff were great with the kids and that alone made every meal wonderful. The restaurant is set by the main pool and it is beautiful at night.

The two pools are very nice, though the main one is in need of resurfacing. We were told they plan to do it during the slow season in 07 (Sep/Oct). Towels are available at each pool as well as near the beach.

The beach is terrific here as I mentioned and there is some equipment available for guests at the booth just before stepping on the sand.

There is an activities desk that can help you with anything you need. Andrea was extremely helpful. The front desk can even arrange in suite spa services.

The resort is near Ports of Call where a couple of car rental places have locations. This is handy if only renting for a day or so to stock up. You don't need to go back/forth to the airport to deal with the car. However, the airport is only about 20 minutes away.

Finally, RWI is not for people who want to be pampered from head to toe constantly. The ideal traveller is in independent minded person, who wants some space, simple pleasures, cleanliness and a great location. My family cannot wait to go back and we are already trying to schedule a return visit. We wish we spent our entire 10 days here.
