Just returned from a week long stay at a Luxury Oceanfront 1 BR in the Lady Rose building at Alexandra.
Overall, I was very pleased with the room. It was well appointed, very comfortable, large, and had a nice balcony. The decor is pleasing, and the choice of lighting excellent. The couch was not the most comfy in the world (think large foam cushions), but if you have to relax and watch TV, you can do so in the bedroom.
The stereo with iPod jack was nice as well. We always had easy Wi_Fi access in our room.
The main bathroom is comfortable and well thought out, and two people can get ready without crowding each other. It came with shampoo, conditioner, soap, body lotion, and a sewing kit.
The kitchen was lovely, modern, had interesting lighting, nice stainless steel GE Profile appliances and a beautiful island/granite countertop.
The bedroom was very comfortable, the glass doors opening to the balcony with a spectacular view, and effective room dakening drapes. The linens were nice, bright, and the sheets soft, and the closet was a good size with a full mirror and electronic safe. The mattress was comfortable (although, there is no place like home), and the bed had six fluffy pillows on it. There was nightly turn down service.
We had no bugs in the room such as sand fleas or mosquitos, much less geckos crawling our walls, which is more than I can say for some resorts on the island. There is nothing worse than waking up in the morning with 20-30 new mosquito bites. Having to spray down your bed sheets with bug spray is, well, gross. There are some resorts where one has to do so. Alexandra is not one of them. In addition, the balcony has two ceiling fans - use them, as the mosquitos can't fly in wind.
The twice daily maid service was especially nice, with towels being changed on each visit. Although, timing was not consistent - one day, our first visit was at 5 pm, so, they came only once.
There is a washer and dryer in the room, but no detergent - you can get some at the IGA (think Whole Foods prices - three bags = $100.00)
We brought our favorite coffee with us, and it was wonderful to make some in the morning and mill about the room and the balcony. The balcony had two cushioned chairs with ottomans (perfect for watching the sunset, or gazing at the moon), as well as a small end table, and a large table with seating for six.
We stayed in an end unit, and, the number of windows was very nice. Not only are their windows in the front of the unit, there were windows in the kitchen, as well as in the bathroom and side windows in the bedroom. While we tend to stick to A/C durning the summer months, it could provide a nice breeze.
The pool is very beautiful, and there weren't more than 6 people at the pool at any given time. Of course, the beach is located on Grace Bay, and is beautiful. Bring an inflatable raft along (better yet, one with a mesh bed) and float on the turquoise water. Landscaping is nice and mature for a new property.
There is a public beach access between Alexandra and Veranda (which is sitting empty right now, nearly complete, but that is another story). As such, if you are in the Lady Rose building on the end closest to Veranda, you might hear and will see people using the public beach access - and it is very well used.
The beach was a little more "busy" than I like, with motorized boats from BEACHES pulling banana boaters back and forth. But, that's just me. I am used to near seclusion in Leeward.
Like most places, there is no beach service, and most days, there weren't even umbrellas set up. Often, we had to grab an umbrella ourselves. No big deal, but, it would have been nice to have some already staged. Some people had to drag chairs to a spot as well.
It was the least "resort like" experience I have had on Grace Bay, without much intreraction between guests and staff. If you like to be pampered, or want to know you can ring up service quickly, go for The Palms, next door. At Alexandra, it feels more like a hotel, and the new, huge, five storey buildings on the property add to that feeling.
Two points that could be improved -
The number of large bath towels in the room. We had three. There were plenty of floor mats (up to 4, maybe 5), hand towels (at least 6) and wash cloths, but only 3 large towels. 4 would have been ideal for two people in one room (girls need one to dry their hair, you know). When we asked for more large towels, we got a very strange look. Even after asking, they stocked the room with only 3 every day, until we asked.
Towels for guests at the pool and on the beach. Alexandra has a policy whereby guests must "sign out" towels daily, and return them by the end of the evening or be charged $50.00. Kind of a pain. And, there is only one place to get towels- usually on the beach. And that station is generally unmanned. So, there might be towels, there might not - we had to ask on a few occassions, and know that a few other guests had to do so as well. Tredging down to the sandy beach to get towels to use at the pool is not the most convienent thing - it would have been nice to towels at the pool and on the beach - and it would have been even nicer to dispense with the whole sign in/sign out process. Most people take their towels to the room, and housekeeping picks them up. Not so here, lest you be charged $50.00 for failure to return your towels.
