We just returned from our trip to The Tuscany, we stayed for a week in July. Let me give you as much info as I can:
THE VILLA:
The villa itself was wonderful. We stayed in W203, they say this is the villa they show in their brochures, and I believe I read that on another review, as well. The housekeepers kept it very nice and clean every day, they worked very hard to do all that they could. They even helped us track down a cooler to take to the pool.
Many reviews tell you that all rooms are the same as far as the view goes. If I were you-avoid the first floor. We were taken into a few rooms to choose from, and the first floor really has no view. We saw another room on the 4th floor, great view, but really, even on the 2nd floor its the same. Request a room on the outside of the building. There are 3 villas on each floor, don't get the one in the middle...even the manager told us that they were darker just bc of less sunlight coming in. So that's my advice.
POOL:
The pool is great, temp is perfect. I don't know if it is written up as having a jacuzzi...well...there IS something that looks like it would be a jackuzzi, but its not. It is the same water temp as the pool, has a little pretty waterfall that goes into the pool. So just know there is no jackuzzi-but you are crazy if you need one in that heat!
We practically had the pool to ourselves, only on two separate occassions for half an hour did we share it with anyone! I guess low season is a good time to go. I don't think many of the villas were occupied last week...maybe a few others.
Nice lounge chairs and many umbrellas.
BEACH:
Same thing with the beach, pretty private right behind the villa. Clean-very clean! Great water. The salt water isn't as salty I thought...when you get a mouthful, it isn't as bad as it usually is, so that was a plus for me! All of the resorts like Club Med are down to the left.
It is illegal in TCI for vendors to hassle you on the beach...so don't worry about that! No one bothers you!
Just on the left is a little stand where you can rent a kayak or small sailboat. $35/hr for the first hr of sailing (4 people) and $25/hr after that. $15/hr for a kayak (2 people).
To the right they are doing construction on another villa. So that was a bummer since we couldn't walk that way. But on Sunday, no one was there and we were able to do some snorkeling. Nothing fancy, but we only stayed in one spot bc I liked the shells!
So maybe if you explore a little more you might find something. Couldn't go the rest of the week bc of the dumb trucks!
We saw a sting ray right in the shallow part! He was shallow enough that we saw him while walking on the beach.
EATING:
A big variety of restaurants to choose from, from pizza places and take out deli's, to fancy expensive plates. Turtle Cove has a few restaurants all in the same spot so we were there 3 different nights. All of them are on the water. Tiki Hut and Sharbite Grille are more sandwiches, pizza, burgers, fish...and then there is Aqua and Baci (Italian). A little more expensive than the first two. Definitely come to Turtle Cove to eat. You can walk around the dock and look at all of the boats and yachts from all over.
Overlooking Turtle Cove on a hill is Magnolia's. Very nice place with a great view, pricey. More like $25-40 a plate. Or just go there for dessert...had some yummy looking desserts on the menu!
Hemingway's is also one of the more priecy places, you need reservations. I didn't eat here but my parents did.
Stopped at Da Conch Shack in Blue Hills, we were told this would give you the true island feeling. And boy it did...kinda a cool little place right on the beach, but definitely more like "the shack" rather than a restaurant. And since two of us arent fish eaters and this is primarily what was served...we left. Horse Eyed Jack's is right next door. Nice deck to sit on, a few hammocks, smaller menu. Big bar. We didnt eat here, but it looks like a cool, relaxed place.
Went to Angie's Top of the Cove Deli to take home lunch (on Leeward past the IGA Supermarket), and also ordered from Pizza Port one night. I am a pizza snob...I have had better but it wasnt horrible. There is also Pizza Pizza on that road.
To the left of the villa is a little grille, dont know the name. Walk there from the beach-literally next door, only 2 min walk. Like a pool side grille, good for lunch.
The IGA Supermarket is on Leeward. It is CRAZY busy on Saturdays bc of the switchover day with tourists. Some items are pricier than they are here, but you can find cheaper substitutes. I was told it was $$, but it wasn't as bad I was expecting. We did a few dinners and many lunches at the villa.
THINGS TO DO:
We did a snorkel tour with Silver Deep. They gave us a price of $65 pp instead of $68, so just ask if they have any "promotions." That's what they say on their website! 3 reefs of snorkeling, great! Saw a couple of sharks-and they are right there with you, not at the bottom! A reef shark, nurse shark, school of squid that swam right around us, a 3 ft. lobster, baracuda, and lots of beautiful fish and coral. Our guide was Pop, he was great.
We also drove to Coral Gardens upon other tripadvisor members recommendations. One thing they dont tell you-you need to snorkel on the RIGHT of the fire coral! (we were on the left for a good while wondering what people were talking about!)The fire coral area is marked with red buoys, so dont go there! Snorkel on the right, and you have to go pretty far back to the rocks. I have to say I didn't do too much snorkeling, bc I was captivated by the sea turtles. They were there in the sandy part of the underwater. So I stayed with them...cant tell you what the snorkeling was like beyond them!
Wrong time of the month for Glow worms. Didnt do any fishing-Silver Deep prices were outrageous I thought, but Im not a fisher.
Casino near the villas. Opened 3 weeks ago.
SHOPPING:
No high expectations. Not a lot here. Port of Call and Salt Mills have a few shops. Port of Call is more touristy with the same souvenirs in each shop, but visit Giggles for ice cream!
Overall for the island I would say if you want MORE than watersports, TCI may not be for you. If you are used to ziplines and volcano hikes, you won't find any of that here. There is a cave tour but we didn't explore that.
Jojo the dolphin, they say, hasnt come around in awhile. Pop said a woman had her hand over his blowhole and he couldnt breathe...broke her ribs! So he hasnt been back since.
Rented a car from Grace Bay Car Rental. Todd told us we would receive a free day if staying for a week...so I am currently trying to get that free day. So at this point, I would not recommend them.
The water IS as beautiful as everyone says. Looks fake. Different shades of blue and teal...just awesome. We took our own snorkel equip. which was great bc we could use it whenever we wanted...I didn't see anyone renting it out on the beach. Drove to Dive Provo to rent it for others-they returned it right away and got their money back-awful equip. Maybe a fluke.
Take a drive in Blue Hills along the beach to get a better feel for the island, away from hotels and resorts.
Call the potcake society (homeless animals), you can either adopt or HELP by transporting an animal home for someone in the states. I called but there was no one in my area waiting for their pup. Bummer :(
It was a great trip, VERY hot. I would definitely recommend staying at The Tuscany on Grace Bay.
