The Buccaneer -- St Croix

We stayed at the Buccaneer for a week. The Doubloons room (352) was fabulous -expensive, but fabulous.

The turn-down service was spotty. They didn’t show up once, and we only had the “bedside mats” one night.

Went with the "relax and rejuvenate" package – very nice.

Quick and Dirty on the food: Dinners (2) at: Terrace – nice view, food ok. Mermaid for dinner once and lunch once – food same as Terrace. The breakfast that is compt with the room was great.

Consider venturing out to eat too: Cheeseburgers in Paradise (when will Jimmy Buffet sue them?) – good and cheap (well, relatively cheap for St. Croix). Dominos delivers! (to the room) – dependable and good. The Galleon – the best dinner of our trip ($ and food) the Caesar salad was outstanding.

You should consider renting a car. Rented a car from the week from Hertz – using the Buccaneer rate – no sweat and cheapest of all the rentals - -we ran the hell outta the little Suzuki wind-up car!.

Recent reviewers are right – it’s very quiet at night, and that’s okay. Thank God there is no loud, pumping music on the beach – just people’s voices, then wind, and surf.

“Luxury From a Generation Ago”

My wife and I stayed at the Buccaneer in late April of 08. We truly enjoyed our time there. We reserved their simplest room, a Great house Mountain View, and received an upgrade to a Great house Ocean View. We were in rooms that were likely part of the original resort. While they were not quite 5 stars, they were comfortable, clean and more than satisfying. In fact they were pretty much what I expected given the research I had done when making these reservations. I suspect that the newer, more expensive rooms are more luxurious, as they were built with more up to date standards in mind.

The service was friendly and very accommodating. In fact the friendliness of the entire island was impressive. The dining was excellent. The free breakfast buffet was top notch and our evening meals truly enjoyable. The views of the restaurants, The Terrace and The Mermaid, were likewise stunning. The Buccaneer reminds me of the kind of tropical resort frequented by the stars of a few decades ago. It has a charm from that time period that we found both luxurious and relaxing.

“Great relaxing vacation spot”

The Buccaneer -- St Croix

Apr 29, 2008

We go to St.Croix every April vacation. We've been there for the past 7 Aprils. The Buccaneer is a great spot for a family vacation. The kids camp is wonderful as they have many activites with the children from nature walks, to swimming to snorkling, to arts & crafts. Great way to keep your kids occupied so you can relax and enjoy the beach (or spa or golf) without having to entertain your child.
The rooms are always comfortable and extremely clean as housekeeping is in twice a day once to clean the other for evening turndown.
The golfing is great, except for the 3rd hole and the cross winds which snag your ball if you get it in the air! This is a spectacular hole right on the water. Awesome view. They reconfigured the 10th & 11th holes this past winter which I think are a great inprovement.
We snorkle off of Mermaid Beach but personally, I think the snorkling is better off of Whistle Beach. Also, a nice spot for retrieving golf balls from the water after they've been shanked from the 4th tee. This beach is remote and you have to cross the 2nd & 4th green to get to it. Watch out for the ant mounds!
Snorkling at Buck Island is also a must do once in your life. The boat charters tend to be pricey so snorkling off the beach is just as good.
The breakfast buffet is great. We fill up for the day as there is so much to eat. Fresh fruit that one doesn't get to see often in New England. Plenty of pancakes, french toast, muffins, eggs, omlettes, potatoes and much more. Many great restaurants in St Croix. Our favorites are Cultured Pelican, Rum Runners, Duggan's, Case Place to name a few. After eating the local cuisine, you'll need to use the fitness center. It has enough equipment to keep you in shape and as others have mentioned, walking up and down the hills is great exercise. (thank goodness for courtesy vans!)

If you want to just veg out on your vacation you can sit on the beach, or sit in the living room/foyer area of the main house in comfortable wing chairs and sofas. This where the communal lap top is. They do have wireless, so you can bring your lap top.

The best part of staying at the Buccaneer is being welcomed back each year. Many of the employees have worked there for years and they remember you. It's nice to walk into a hotel and have them greet you by name :)

“Okay stay at the Buccaneer”

The Buccaneer -- St Croix

My son and I stayed at this resort during spring break. My son had a brillant time. I would not recommend this hotel if you are single travelling with a child. I find that this hotel attracks older couple. Absolutely nothing to do at night. I was bit disappointed and a bit bored. Can't be compared to the Turks. With that said if you are travelling with lots of friends then this would be the place you would want to be. The property is huge felt as though the resort was empty. The staff is wonderful the place is clean. Breakfast is included and what I did not like is that they give you a bill @ breakfast and the only reason doing that is for the tip. Would I go back ,maybe..

“Here's the deal on the Buccaneer”

The Buccaneer -- St Croix

We just got back from a week stay at the Buccaneer and overall we really had a great time. We travelled with our two children 14 and 17. I would say the right word for the Buccaneer is "charming". It may not be for everyone because it is a small, quaint, quiet resort. There is no island music or outdoor bars on the beach. They do not come around to your lounge chairs to take your drink or lunch orders. They have two pools but they are very small and we honestly never used them once. Putting those few things aside, the place really has a lot going for it. Our room (Oceanside, 341) was beautiful, with a great view and located in between the two popular beaches, Mermaid and Grotto. The beaches are sort of on the small side but very pretty, quiet and relaxing,You can snorkel right off the beach at Grotto there is a reef right there with some really beautiful fish.We were there during spring break, the resort was very full but it never felt crowded. You never had to rush to save lounge chairs in the morning, there were plenty. They also have snorkel equipment, canoes, rafts, boogie boards, frisbees etc.. available at both beaches all for free and they never ran out of anything. They also have lots of tennis courts, a mini basketball court and ping pong on the property right by the beach which is nice. There is also a really nice 2 mile walking/jogging path on the property that roams by the ocean and through some of the golf course, it's nice to do before breakfast. Breakfast was included and nicely done, not too many choices like some of the big resorts but more than enough. We had two meals there for dinner which were pretty bad, I would really suggest leaving the property at night for dinner, it was much better and much more fun. My kids were reluctant at first because of some of the posts about the town, but we just hopped in a cab and got dropped off and picked up at some really fun cute places filled with people doing just the same as us. Kendricks was great, we went there twice, Doogans was fun and pretty good too. Another place called Baccus is supposed to be good but we never made it there. The cab drivers were all very pleasant and really added to our trip. Every night at the hotel they do have live music at the bar area in the restaurant at the Terrace restaurant which is nice but it's usually a quiet one man type of thing. Just a note the service overall for lunch and dinner is pretty slow, but as long as you plan for that it's not too bad. Also, the main dining area where they serve breakfast is up a long hill, we didn't mind it but if you're traveling with anyone elderly, you'd have to call for the hotel shuttle to transport them.

We did the half day Buck Island Snorkeling tour and it was a really nice trip, I would recommend that.

Overall it's a nice peaceful place, I would not go there if I was traveling alone with my husband or with a group of friends seeking a lot of night life, it's not that kind of place. It is a great place for families especially if you have small children from what I noticed but my Teenagers enjoyed as well.
